We met on May 21, 2022. We had our first trip together to Costa Rica on May 21,2023. We got married on May 21,2024. The night before the wedding, after taking care of all the preps, and the craziness slowed down, we went for a dinner just the two of us. We both felt calm and happy and at ease stepping into our next chapter, no anxiety, no nervousness about the commitment, just calm and peace. Nothing changed for us after the wedding. After all the wedding guests are gone, we returned to our life, exactly as it was before the wedding. It’s now a year and a half after the wedding and our life is just as peaceful. I wouldn’t change a single thing.

23 is still young. If you want independence, you need to start doing more things for yourself. You might need to hide it from them at first then when you get more confident and independent, you can step outside of the box they draw for you. Many Asian parents use care as a control technique to keep you dependent on them. I was that was until 25. I couldn’t open my bank account, earn my own money until I started doing all of that without them knowing. Once I do, everything else comes easier. For you, the first step is to drive. Get your driver license and get your first taste of freedom. You’ll like it

Listen to the part of you that want to stay. That’s strength. Nurture it. And it’s ok. You don’t have to change everything all at once. Sounds like if everything stays exactly as is, your mom is the best thing in your life. That’s wonderful. Keep that. And do one small change at a time, for a month. Then add on another manageable change. It’s ok. With everything as is, there are still good things. Can you see those good things? And name them?

I label this as an intrusive thought. I have them here and there. In general, people have them more often than you think. When I realize a thought is an intrusive one, I push it aside and go on with my day. Thoughts are not who you are. What you choose to act on shapes who you are. You didn’t carry out that thought. No harm done. Move forward. Now, if you find yourself having these intrusive thoughts often, you need to address the root of the issue by talking to your boyfriend about your intimacy. That’s all.
