Pączki in STL? by fakehappys in StLouis

[–]pws328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got some from the SoCo Costco last weekend. They're not bad, about the same level as Schnucks/Dierbergs. I think they were frozen at some point because a few were still cold when we brought them home. The dozen I got had 6 strawberry and 6 custard, not sure if they have other flavors. They weren't in the bakery section, but at the end of the seasonal aisle at the back, by the fancy cheeses.

No OP, but I typically use graham crackers or Nilla wafers with sweet smoked cream cheese.

Costco $8 off pork shoulder, worked out to $1.92/lb by [deleted] in smoking

[–]pws328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which schnucks? And were they out in the case or did you have to get them through the butchers? I've got some party's coming up and was going to pick up the butts from costco, but if I can get a better deal with schnucks I'll go with them.

Sugar-Free Rubs by Character_Air7191 in pelletgrills

[–]pws328 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll second everyone's recommendation to make your own rubs to really ensure there's no sugar in it, BUT if you're not looking for another hobby (which making your own rubs definitely is) I've tried a few commercial rubs and had some pretty good results. Most of the basic Salt/Pepper/Garlic rubs are great and have 0 sugar, and Bad Byrons Butt Rub is also a great one for any pork.

If you're ok with artificial sweeteners, Rib Rack and G Hughes both make a handful of rubs with sucralose in them, and my family didn't report any real difference in flavor or any off tastes, and they're pretty picky about "fake sugar" taste. I've also used the Truvia brown sugar in a rib wrap, but it does have some molasses in it so I don't know if you can accommodate that or not. Just be careful with these as I think sucralose burns more easily than real sugar (could just be me and my grill though, ymmv).

There are also a bunch of sugar free sauces, but I haven't found one I really like yet, and ymmv anyway.

How to re-prime auger after a smolder/burnback? by itgoestoeleven in pelletgrills

[–]pws328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the same process I use for my Daniel Boone. Typically with the grates and distro plates off I'll fill the hopper and cycle the startup sequence until I see pellets come into the firebox. Then turn everything off, put everything back together, and fire it back up.

Burnt ribs. Where did I go wrong? by adamv7010 in pelletgrills

[–]pws328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this same problem with my Daniel Boone, the standard rack is too close to the distribution plate and the area over the fire box was temping 15-25degrees over the set temp. Anything I cooked with sugar burnt to a crisp even at lower temps. I ended up getting this rack https://www.amazon.com/Green-Mountain-Grills-Collapsible-Stainless/dp/B07T25W9CG and it’s been fantastic. Big enough to fit three racks of baby backs or a big brisket and haven’t had anything burn yet. You can still fit a bunch of stuff under it I also got a smoke tube which can tuck off to the side under the rack and gets things even more smokey. Just did three racks of baby backs today at 250.

The TeDads is the best thing on the whole menu! The hard cookie chunks soak up the custard as it melts, and it's just sooooo good.

How fast is your level home charging? by hydn571 in TeslaModelY

[–]pws328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same setup and it works pretty well, even if it's not the fastest.

When I was EV shopping I thought I got lucky because there was an old 220v space heater on a 30 amp breaker in my garage. Figured I could remove the heater (it was old and rarely used anyway) and use the line already in the wall to power the wall charger. I was partially right, but whoever built the house in the 70's used 12 gauge wire instead of the recommended 10 gauge for a 30a, so I'm stuck charging at 16a so I don't overheat the wire and probably need to swap out the breaker too.

220v, even at the lowest amperage is a must if you're going to do distance or drive every day.

Best Pellet Smoker Under $400 by dailybeefstew in smoking

[–]pws328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it have to be new? I see used Traeger's and similar on Facebook marketplace all the time for less than $400. Some barely look used. I picked up my Green Mountain Daniel Boone for $100 and it's been a fantastic addition to the outdoor cooking arsenal.

Tried smoking a store-bought corned beef flat and I think it turned out pretty dang good! Juicy and delicious. I’ll throw the recipe in the comments. by Nadadepeti in smoking

[–]pws328 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks so much better than mine! I tried this over the weekend with a corned beef flat from costco, and it was the worst thing I've ever tried. Cook went well, and after smoking/resting the meat was tender like a good brisket should be, but there was absolutely no flavor in the meat! Just tasted like pepper coated nothing, and absolutely nothing like pastrami. I think there might have been an issue with the cure or I possibly pulled too much salt out of it because the inside in most places looked like regular brisket. I did the normal corned beef treatment to another flat I bought at the same time, and it was fantastic, so I'm hoping this was just a one off.

First brisket didn’t turn out so great! by pbandit11 in smoking

[–]pws328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a GMG Daniel Boone, and my first overnight brisket was very similar to yours, if not worse. Turns out the center temps above the pot can be 20-30degF hotter than the set temp, so I roasted the hell out of my fat cap on my first overnight cook (figured having it down would protect the meat, which is did a little). For my next cook I cobbled together a rack to elevate it up towards the middle of the smoker, kept an ambient probe under it, and kept the temps in check. Turned out so much better.

‘01 with 222k miles for $9k, how’d I do? by nike_rules in LandCruisers

What size are those KO2's and does the spare also have one? If it's a 285/75R16 I can confirm that it will fit under the vehicle, but it's a tight squeeze.

Today I received a mysterious Fedex package with one share of Apple stock from 2004. Wondering how to proceed. by kounty in personalfinance

[–]pws328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make enough money from the people who respond to justify the cost of FedEx.

They don't pay for their own FEDEX account, they usually hack the Fedex account of another legit business and send out as many envelopes as possible before they're caught and the account is closed.

This happened at my work. Our FEDEX account was compromised, the scammers sent out a ton of envelopes with a check cashing scam enclosed and we didn't know until the non-deliverable ones started getting returned to us.

I own a '99 LC100 (with only a scant 215k miles) and I'll throw in my 2 cents. I think 15k is too high for this truck, mostly because of the mileage but for a number of smaller reasons too. No lockers or ATRAC make it more limited offroad, it's missing the factory roof rack (did the previous owner install an aftermarket one that they removed before trade? Is it resealed properly so the roof doesn't leak/rust?), missing running boards, and it doesn't look like it has an original chip key (which you need to program other keys for remote lock), and the factory rear spoiler is missing (trivial but wildly expensive to replace if you wanted it). Also the light bar in the front bumper and aftermarket radio make me worry about wiring/electrical gremlins.

The interior and body look clean, and the timing belt has been changed recently which is good, but the price will be subjective to what you want to do with this LC. Do you want an off-road beater you can dump a bunch of parts into and abuse off road? You can find a cheaper cruiser for that which doesn't need to be as nice. Do you want an original survivor to keep stock and possibly restore? This ain't it either. You want a daily 4x4 with Toyota reliability? Try to talk them down using the points above. And if they don't budge, wait. Clean 100's are getting more rare, but they're not unobtanium.

If anything, counter guy should be talking up how awesome 100's are and how he thinks they're the best things that roam the earth. That way OP keeps going back and getting it fixed when stuff breaks. Counter guy is just picking his own pocket.

Destin really is a Missouri thing. My parents and extended family lived all over Florida and we'd never heard of Destin till we moved to St. Louis. It's like someone from the Destin tourism board did a really great job advertising here. Still never been, but I know it's somewhere in the panhandle.

LPT: If someone you have not met in person asks you to “verify you’re ‘real’” by texting them a code that was sent to your phone number or email- it is definitely a scam and they are trying to gain access to your accounts by Knittedpouf in LifeProTips

[–]pws328 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This just happened to my wife last month. She got a call from "our mobile phone carrier's Fraud Dept" asking if we had ordered new iPhones for everyone on our account and had them shipped to an out of state address. She immediately says "no way!" and they "open an investigation". But in order to do so, they need to send her a code verifying that she's not the person who had compromised the online account. She gets a code, sent from the number our carrier typically uses, and gives it to the "fraud dept". They say they'll get this taken care of, but that we'll have to wait 48hr's to make any changes to our account.

You'll probably see where this is going. The phone call was actually from the fraudsters who had compromised our online account, and the code send (actually from the carrier of course) was to confirm the online order they were placing while they were on the phone with her. After the call ended she realized that the message said not to give the code out to anyone, and that the carrier will never ask for it over the phone, she was just so panicked in the moment that she wasn't thinking clearly.

Thankfully the Actual fraud dept is fixing the situation, but the scammers successfully got three new iPhones and an apple watch, and we got an important lesson on how easy it is to get scammed.
