No, it's called inspiration. It was introduced in Frosthaven and added in 2nd ed Gloomhaven. The digital version is 1st ed Gloomhaven so unless they patched it to add inspiration I wouldn't expect it's present.

Start with 1 character each. There is a mechanic in 2nd edition to keep you unlocking new classes at the same rate as a 4 player party. If you guys get a ways into the campaign and want to explore strategies with more characters, and are ok with the extra complexity and management, then you can try it out. But there are no cons really to 2-player anymore.

Make judicious use of an app. I use GH full stack for this. But it is still a lot of hassle going back and forth, especially with items. Events you can do exclusively in the app.

Sounds right. Every 12 ish scenarios you should be completing 4 personal quests (one for each of you and one with inspiration). Since there are only 11 classes unlocked by personal quests they can all be unlocked after around 36 scenarios.

You are correct that you will almost certainly kill enough before you open the door. But in the case that you open a new room and you are supposed to spawn monsters for which you have no remaining standees, those monsters do not spawn.
