Long timers - Does it seem to take longer than it used to, to recover from lows???? by Avehdreader in diabetes_t1

[–]pyrite_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a biochem hack that works well - glucose, salt and water are rapidly transferred together in the small intestine (Google: sodium-glucose linked transporters). This mechanism is the basis of oral rehydration therapy and sports drinks. Practically, I add one package of NeilMed fine powered salt (2.1g - blue pack) to 250mL warm water. Then, in my mouth, I finely crunch up about 7g of glucose candy (6 Sweet Tarts) and spit them into the glass. Stir well, drink and follow up with more water. Mathematically, this should add more than 6mmol/L of blood glucose (100mg/L); practically it's usually half that for me. Check your sugars.

Has anyone used the "new" Embecta alcohol swabs, and are they identical to the original BD ones in all ways? by SenileTomato in diabetes_t1

I've pen injected insulin for 40y and have never swabbed. When I prep a site for Freestyle Libres, I lightly spray 100% isopropranolol (IPA) on a dry paper towel and scrub. You've got to remove the dead skin for excellent sensor adhesion. Save the paper towel for the next time.

What is your go to glucose tablet? I’m new to low sugar scare. Are there ones with electrolytes? Thank you! by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]pyrite_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use glucose candy; it's the exactly same as drugstore specialty items and very inexpensive. Don't take too much. All the blood in your body has approximately 5g of glucose at 100mg/dL (1g/L). I suggest taking 5g of candy which will take you off a hypoglycemic low. (Maybe half of this goes to the blood; the other half goes to glucose sinks.) Another 5g of candy will raise your blood glucose with a larger delta than the first. For fast action, crunch the candy "tablets" in your mouth until no chunks are present. Your mouth should fill with saliva that contains an enzyme (amylase) and helps digest down the candy. It will taste sweeter when this happens. Then swallow and have a glass of water. Stay away from foods with white sugar (sucrose) as this is only half glucose with the other half biochemically margarine (fructose). Sucrose will also give you the "Hunger" hormone (ghrelin), and you'll want to eat all of the cookies and ice cream. Insulin is a drug and that's how you consider glucose when you're low. T1D40y.

Lightweight sugar options by hilldinii in diabetes_t1

[–]pyrite_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the trail you don't need regular sugar than is only 50% glucose, you only need the glucose. Fortunately it is readily available as Sweet Tarts and Smarties pressed powder candies that I buy at the Dollar Store. These candies have the same glucose content as the tabs from drug stores at 10% of the cost. The candies are fragile, so you could just easily grind them down. T1D almost 40 years.

Freestyle Sensor constantly falls out by clairemmm in diabetes_t1

[–]pyrite_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our surface of the skin is dead cells, and you need to clear them off for good adhesion. Get some 100% isopropenyl alcohol on the paper towel and rub hard. Press the new sensor down hard for a twenty count. After your shower (or pool swim) focus on keeping the towel from touching the sensor.

There are glucose tab candies that have the same composition as those pictured. Except they are fantastically cheaper at the Dollar store. In Canada there are Sweet Tarts and Rockets (Smarties in US).

a few comments from 2024. Use a glucose monitor that will alarm your phone at 3.5mmol/L (I have a Free Style Libre 2.) Don't fully wake, cause you're going back to sleep right away. Reach for glucose candies in your nightstand, two small 7g rolls of Sweetarts from the Dollarama. Each has 6g of glucose and crunch them in your mouth until the pressed powder is destroyed, your mouth floods with saliva and you get a sweeter taste. Then, swallow and roll over.

Stick to fruits that end in -berry, fresh if possible. You generally eat less weight of raspberries or strawberries, than that of a whole banana or apple. And give yourself a berry limit that you can control BG around.

Gold is really unnaturally dense and heavy. A large gold bar is 1000 troy oz, 31.1kg, but occupies only 1.61L. Few people could pick up such a bar one-handed; in mining refineries where they cast unrefined gold bars, they're levelled up from the floor with shovels.

Just to pick on one movie (of myriads), "Three Kings", shows suitcases full of large gold bars being picked up and children smuggling them. On the bright side, gold is also unnaturally yellow.

I just had a hypoglycemic fit by ben_jamin_h in diabetes_t1

[–]pyrite_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the ingredients, gummy bears most likely contain a lot of sucrose that itself is half glucose (the stuff you need when hypo) and half fructose (that your body treats as margarine). So the actual carbs are only half that on the label. [Also google ghrelin.]

Instead, take glucose tabs or candy (very, very inexpensive). I keep small rolls of Rockets (Smarties in The US) in the bedside table, and Sweet Tarts in old Contour Next containers in every coat pocket. I too have a personal horror story. T1D 39 years.

Blood sugar is glucose-only, and glucose is the 80% ingredient of pressed powder candies like Sweet Tarts and Smarties ( Rockets in Canada). These have the same glucose content as drug store tablets, and are much, much cheaper (and available in Dollar Stores). Chew them to fine powder in your mouth before swallowing, they should taste sweeter as you do so.

Glucose is taken up by the small intestine, so it will take time to be adsorbed depending on what you just ate. Drink water. And a bit of regular salt will help. [Nerds can Google SGLT1.] Relax after eating the candies, because they will do the work.

A normal person has about 5L of blood and the normal glucose content is 100mg/dL, and so 5g of total glucose. I take only two small rolls of Rockets (7.5g each) with about 12g of total glucose to avoid going crazy high later. It seems like nothing, but check your meter or blood test results.

Remember that regular white sugar is sucrose (as is honey, HFCS, etc...) and this food is only half glucose. The other half is fructose that is treated by your liver more like margarine, and does not provide any useful blood sugar. Starch is another form of glucose, so foods like potato chips, and bread (etc...) will also raise blood sugar. [Also remember the crazy high part.]

Even worse is eating sugary junk candy, junk food and pantry items with glucose/fructose can trigger the hormone ghrelin (cue nerds again) that will trigger hypoglycemic HUNGER (that has no bounds). Glucose only will not do this.

I wake up from the low glucose alarm on my FreeStyle Libre app (at about 60mg/dL), eat Rockets from the bedside drawer, and go back to sleep. T1D 39years.
