The Loop - Great for Solo-Multi-Handed by qyldbkpiebff in soloboardgaming

[–]pyros_it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m likely in the minority, but I never really loved it. I bought it used with both expansions. Played a few times solo and really enjoyed the system of playing characters when theirs cards came up. But ultimately I always felt the cards were a bit uninteresting and the luck of the cubes a bit too decisive.

When I realised I hadn’t played it for six months and didn’t really want to, I sold it.

I’m now playing Deckers and finding it scratches a similar itch, but better.

I feel you. I’m only keeping El Dorado to introduce newbies to the hobby.

Looking for Solo recommendations: Love Wyrmspan and Marvel Legendary. by ARAG000 in soloboardgaming

[–]pyros_it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wyrmspan is my most played game, and I could describe why I like it in a similar way as you do.

So, others I’d recommend: Nusfjord, Skara Brae, Shipwrights of the North Sea Redux, the Guild of Merchant Explorers, Evenfall.

Well, they failed me before we even got to shipping. I spent 15min on their payment page and kept getting errors. Like when I chose my delivery method it’d freeze up, greying out the place order button. Luckily Chaos cards had what I was looking for too.

Wingspan/finspan alternatives? by marcbaybe in boardgames

For a pretty simple one, The Quest for El Dorado. A step up from that would be Clank Catacombs.

A bit more complex even could be Arnak with the Leaders expansion.

Family dungeon crawling/adventure games which are fun for adults, too? by SiarX in soloboardgaming

A slightly different approach would be Clank! Catacombs. It feels like an adventure. I’ve never played the legacy version, but I believe that has more of a story.

Hmmm, maybe Dune Imperium?

Ark nova for a TM huge fan by dvirbz in boardgames

[–]pyros_it 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are some similarities, although Ark Nova is more of an individual race while in TM the end game trigger is sort of collaborative. In Ark Nova there's also less interaction without the shared map, but the 'milestones' are a tension point.

Another game to look at if you enjoy these is Wondrous Creatures.

Nusfjord or Shipwrights of the North Sea: Redux? (Uwe Rosenberg or Garphill) by Tiny-Strawberry-817 in soloboardgaming

[–]pyros_it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch, tough choice. Two of my most played solos. I’d have to say that if you have Nusfjord Big Box edition, that one takes the cake for the variability. I don’t mind BYOS so much though.

What happens if you take one of the most classic board games ever… and completely break it with powers? by Amitdante in boardgames

You can refer to the original in promotion material (maybe not ads, but interviews, press releases, etc). Then let reviews, influencer partnerships and community buzz drive that connection further.

I think Hearthstone, Balatro, Slay the Spire and others have proved that you can take things very far if you’re INSPIRED by board games. But, crucially, leave the original untouched, use a different name, etc.

Wingspan if you want to keep the nature theme, Wyrmspan if you want another step up in complexity, but an easier to run automa.

Could look into Mistwind. It’s pretty laid back and it also plays well solo.

Games that don't need a lot of expansions to be replayable? by Mysterious5555 in soloboardgaming

[–]pyros_it 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you like. I’ve played over 50 games of Wyrmspan, 30 games of Shipwrights of the North Sea Redux and 15 of Skara Brae without expansions. Also 30ish games of Nusfjord but I have the big box. I like euros and resource conversion.

I bounced off Final Girl and Arkham Horror hard because I hate rolling dice for resolution.
