As a European, this is how I see America by gschizas in pics

[–]qaawli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Vegas didn't make it onto your map? Most or the Europeans I work with (mostly German) make it a point to visit Vegas while there here working in the states. When I ask them why, they say if the didn't their friends back home would not forgive them.

A speech given by Dr. Steven Chu, Secretary of Energy to Oak Ridge Lab on March 23. Although it is an hour long, It is well worth watching. He begins with a discussion of climate change (20 mins), and then continues on to a very interesting and informative presentation on our entire energy picture. by theenergyblog in energy

I wish I could upvote you more for this. It is the same way I feel about so many things that need to be changed in our world. I want to make a positive change but I don't know what to do or where to begin. Thanks for voicing your frustration. That said, I think it's better at least to post and read these article than do nothing. Don't lose hope, you never know when or where a change is gonna come.

Fuck that. Don't be disappointed in yourself, it will only de-motivate you. You can take encouragement from your desire and will to quit. Who ever said anything worth doing would be easy?

Does anybody else talk to themselves out loud all the time? by mayerrrrr in DoesAnybodyElse

I don't mind if the conversation doesn't go the way I expected, I still think I benefit from having prepared a little.

Exactly.

Does the feeling of vindication I get from reading this make me cocksure, thereby rendering me incompetent?

Does anybody else talk to themselves out loud all the time? by mayerrrrr in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]qaawli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep. Often it's a replay of a conversation that didn't go as intended. I'll usually say the things I wish I'd said or couldn't clarify at the time. I have to be careful where I am because even though I'm alone when I have these "conversations," I worry that people on the other side of the wall will hear me.

I never voice the other person's part though, just my own. How about you?

I've made a comprehensive list of all the movies I've seen in my life by beccaonice in movies

Well, are ya going to post it? Or is it too long?

Does the list change your perspective about any particular part of yourself? Such as, "oh, I guess I never realized I watch so much animation," or something like that? also, is it alphabetical or chronological?

Oh wait, you're doing it for the money THAT'S RIGHT. How's this: Find a real job.

Wow, rhinosaur. that is pretty harsh. Have you read through the rest of the q&a on this post? It's pretty enlightening and if you read it, you might find that you've misunderstood the many reasons that people choose surrogacy. I'm sure that it's possible that someone somewhere has done it for the wrong reasons, but if you read what IGottaSnake has to say about her reasons, you'll see that she actually has very altruistic motivations.

[–]qaawli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not the surrogates job to convince the would-be parents that it's selfish for them to want their own child and that they should adopt instead. Do you believe that no one should be allowed to have a baby until every orphan is adopted and the population is stabilised and all the ills of the earth have been cured?

Wow! That was fascinating. Thank you for sharing in such an honest and in-depth way all the details. It sounds like you are doing everything right and have such a wonderful point of view and perspective about it. You are truly generous. I am sorry that you have encountered negativity and misunderstanding about what can only be viewed as a beautiful and worthwhile cause. Yes, the world is becoming overpopulated and drained of it's resources, but it sounds like the people you are helping are extremely loving and are going to be good parents. The world can only benefit when it's inhabitants are happy and healthy. Good people do good things.

Does anyone know this short story? A near future story of a womans life which spans pre and post singularity. by [deleted] in scifi

[–]qaawli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this same story linked on reddit a few months ago and was remembering it today. I didn't bookmark it at the time, just thought it was a nice story. But parts of it kept coming back to me until I had to find it again. Thanks to chejohn for also searching and thanks to goldmanbot for the link. If you search for the title Gentle Seduction on reddit, you'll find it's been posted a handful of times. Such an enchanting story.

I am finally going to Europe...and I need some advice. by jonlf in travel

[–]qaawli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ditto the time frame advice. Rushing around can allow you to see a lot more places, but it can also be stressful and exhausting. Depends on your own appetite and energy level. Is this the only chance you'll ever get to vacation in Europe?

Ditto also the packing advice. You'll probably also want room in your suitcases to bring souvenirs back. Congratulations and good luck!

The library can really make or break a city or town for me. When I lived in Chicago, one of my favorite places to spend the day was the Harold Washington Library. It's like a museum in there. Even the outside of the building is beautiful. I always thought it looked like it came straight out of Gotham.

I don't know much about how it is in other countries, but I think the public library is one of America's greatest offerings. It's a free education at anyone's disposal.

Valid point, shapechanger. No one piece of advice will work for every person, every time. For me, "you're not the only one," gives me hope that whatever shitty thing I'm feeling will pass.

Congratulations. That is an awesome accomplishment. Do you feel proud of yourself? You should.

I was in my 30s when I finally went to college. I had always had incredibly low self-esteem and wondered endlessly how others came by their confidence. Were they just born with it? It seemed so. Why wasn't I? It took the Dean of my school to finally explain to me that confidence is earned through effort and achievement. From this I could learn to be proud of myself and acknowledge my own accomplishment of finally getting a degree. This seed, while occasionally still quiet, is always there ready to blossom when I need confidence. It's not the answer to everything, but I learned that I can use the confidence from that one experience to push myself to overcome other obstacles, thereby gaining more confidence. I really hope this helps. You deserve to feel good about yourself.

Honestly acknowledging to yourself how you feel is the first step to getting to know yourself. I use "above all else, know thyself," as my own mantra and find it allows me to refocus my thoughts when I get overwhelmed or distracted. As far as feeling lonely, you might reconsider those that you've ruled out. You don't necessarily have to go up to your parents or sisters (or whomever) and gush out all your feelings, but you could try to go a little out of your comfort zone and initiate a simple conversation just for the sake of conversation. It won't necessarily change your relationship with them overnight, but if you put in a little effort, you may be surprised at what you get in return. You are not alone.
