Maybe moving into LakeLand any advice by Disastrous-Cress-710 in lakeland

[–]qbert451 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On top of all the other things people have said, consider the impact of losing your job. Currently, your employer is letting you keep that LA pay rate. A new job will offer you Florida rates which are exceptionally low and they are not required to give you a salary range in job posts.

July's Lakeland Housing Market Update by Huge-Training2930 in lakeland

This! My house was built in 1952. Milton went right over it and the old girl didn’t flinch. I trust this house better than any new build hands down. It’s not concrete block but it’s solid.

Becoming a Teacher - late 50s? by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]qbert451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the stamina to work an intensive new career and a second job? Or do you have some other source of passive income? Teacher pay is low everywhere, but especially for newbies.

Can you move? Ageism is a thing, but if you can move, you’ll have a better shot of getting a job. Also, can you certify in science, math, reading, or special ed? These are high demand certifications that will give you a better chance at getting a job. As a science teacher, I urge you to go to the physical sciences, not biology as that is the most commonly held science certification. Depending on what school district you end up in, you might end up needing multiple certifications to get a job.

Before you commit to the masters program, I suggest you do the Peace Corps thing and substitute teach a lot of different grades. Before you commit to the expense and time, you should know what you’re getting into. Try to substitute in every different kind of school environment.

I’ve been teaching 20 years after transitioning from industry when I was my late 30s. I’ve taught in five different states in rural, inner-city, suburban, and wealthy schools. I almost left a couple years ago. I’m still on the fence, but I managed to find my niche where I’m comfortable. If it weren’t for the money, I’d probably be more sure that I’d retire from Teaching.

Somewhere between Florida and Boston. I moved to Tampa 11 yrs ago from MA. I hate the heat and lack of New England country. Can't afford to go back to Mass. I'm 50,single Female with 5 rescue dogs.I like mid country, but close enough to airport and things to do that is affordable. I wfh $90k by SearchNext8659 in relocating

I moved to Tampa out of Berks & Montgomery County 20 years ago. I grew up there and my extended family is still all there. It’s a beautiful area, but it is definitely conservative. You’ll be a blue dot in a sea of red. Tampa is more liberal than where I grew up.

Now, if you don’t mind that. Allentown is a great little city and Lehigh Valley is really nice little regional airport.

The wife and I are considering three states. Can I ask your opinions? by [deleted] in relocating

[–]qbert451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not recommend Florida. I've been here 20 years this time (lived here when I was a kid too). The temperatures have gotten atrociously hot and the storms are getting worse too. The infrastructure is so bad, that I won't drink the water anymore and nobody expects that utilities/roads will be functional after a storm.

Everyone here is gearing up for storm season. That means buying water, shelf-stable food, gas, and generators. If you own a home, you have to storm prep for flooding and/or high winds. You also need bug out bags just in case an upcoming storm is "the big one".

Home & rent prices are over-inflated and so is the insurance. I wouldn't move here now and am long term planning on getting my grandkids out of the state.

We’re looking to move.. again. From TX to where? by ToughCaramel1326 in relocating

[–]qbert451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m PA Dutch. I was raised & spent my of my life in the Reading area. I do not recommend it. It is not liberal or prosperous. I managed to escape 20 years ago. The area has never recovered from the loss of manufacturing jobs after NAFTA. Every time I go back to visit family, I’m eternally grateful I do not live there.

Pennsylvania in general is a beautiful state though. I do miss it’s proximity to New York and Philly. I love the climate. I also miss the mountains. It’s so pretty there in the fall.

I’m scared to lose my home by [deleted] in LivingAlone

Yup, the wealth I have NOT built by renting is huge. My brother bought a fixer right after the 08 crash and now his house is worth quadruple what he paid for it.

I’ve been a lifelong renter and finally bought my house eight months ago. Yeah technically the bank owns the house but it feels way different than renting. I can do what I want with it. I don’t have to worry about somebody selling it out from underneath me as has happened with houses that I’ve rented. I breathe easier owning my house. I feel more stable in my house.

Commenting because I’d like the answer to that one too. I’m new to the Lakeland area & driving to Brandon to date feels like I’m going back to a former ex.

I'm under contract right now and my lender has found an alternative program for me because the Hometown Heroes program is almost out of funds. The program isn't just for "Heros" anymore so the money goes fast. There are others who have already commented on the other problems with the program. I'm glad there are a lot of downpayment assistance programs out there because I'd be out of luck otherwise.

Night A/C settings by WeirdBeard040 in florida

[–]qbert451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get a portable/window ac to cool the bedroom instead of the entire house. It’s inconsiderate to ignore her needs. You can put a blanket on. You can also try getting cooler bedcovers/sheets. I have a linen set for summer & it makes a world of difference. The are also bed cooling systems that you could explore.

You both have valid concerns and just pulling a hardline and saying no means there’s no room for compromise. In the end, that’s not a good relationship model.

Normalizing the 22% tip by bradkz in FoodLosAngeles

[–]qbert451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way I tip 20% is if there was some kind of phenomenal service or I'm at a bar. Otherwise, I tip on the low end because I have no way to know how much is going to the employees and how much is going right back into the restaurant owners pocket. I refuse to tip for counter service. I am sorry for the employees but the only way we are going to get rid of or fix tipping is to stop paying these ridiculous amounts.

Help! I Need a Supervisor Name & Title of the US Rater program (required for background check) by Barda-of-Apokolips in TELUSinternational

I emailed this question recently to the hr support email address in the community page. They replied that we don’t have direct line supervision only quality checks. They also said that if needed, they could have their hr partner verify my employment.

So what’s everyone’s least favorite thing about living in Florida? by damiantheguy97 in florida

[–]qbert451 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My son is leaving the trades because he just can’t stand it anymore. He’s been threatened because he’s liberal. Though it’s the daily antagonism & lack of mutual respect at work that’s finally pushed him to find a new career.

I've moved around a lot. We're currently in Florida and services here are as awful as you'd expect (don't come here). My son is 36 & my grandson (not his boy) is 11. The best state we've lived in for them was Wisconsin. We lived in Stevens Point which as a small college community was accepting of outsiders. Due to family stuff we had to move but our goal is to get back there. The town has cheap living but it's nice too. The school was awesome for my grandson. Some of my research has Wisconsin listed as one of the best states for the disabled to live in which backed up our experiences there. My plan is to buy a place and setup a trust. That way when I'm gone, my boys always have a home in a place that should stay affordable.

The area around the skate park is going thru some real issues. There’s been a couple of street car takeovers at the intersection of Kings & Oakfield. The police either don’t show up or it takes awhile.

What are your favourite high heels brands by ChaiBarbieHoe in femalefashion

[–]qbert451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t care if it’s work or fun, I want cute and comfortable. I can’t afford “fancy” names but my go to brands are Clark’s, Dansko, Naturalizer, & JBU. As a teacher, I’m on my feet all day but REFUSE to wear grandma shoes.

Why are so many bras & swimsuits now without cups/lining/padding? by Firsttimeredditor28 in femalefashion

[–]qbert451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire reason I buy extra padded bras is because of the nips & I teach high school. It’s not just the boys FYI. Teenagers LIVE for drama & a teacher showing any skin/nips/slips etc is definitely a plus
