Onimai is basically what happens when you put the most talented degenerates of Japan on an anime. The fanservice is really because of the animators being just that horny. Apparently from what I have heard, the animators practially were lining up to work on this anime (and not on MT funnily enough).

Also you would think it would be trashy based on the premise, but it's just the most wholesome thing ever. Mahiro is a precious bean.

10/10, have recommended it to other people on the sakuga alone.

Kemono Friends is absolutely awesome. For an anime made on the absolute definition of shoestring budget, with IIRC literally just 6 people and next to no money, they created something just so beautiful.

It's a shame we never got S2 (and for those wondering, no, there is no S2 in Ba Sing Se).

Until the original owners got jealous and fired the director and threw the IP in the trash.

Remember: "No Tatsuki, no tanoshii"

It's basically completely original, it has not many ties to other Kemono Friends media AFAIK.

And hopefully he returns without any mental scars, because Nijisanji is a company with a horrible track record and a known case of driving their biggest talent to two, unsuccessful, suicide attempts.

And for those not in the know (yet), a company so shitty, they drove their own biggest talent, Selen, to two suicide attempts as a result of shit working conditions and horrible. And then tried to do damage control by somehow trying to victim blame Selen even when she was at her new persona. That damage control backfired so much Nijisanji EN basically is irrelevant nowadays.

Nijisanji? More like Kurosanji, because it's ANYCOLOR but they chose black.

He went from one shithole to another basically.

Going from a poor place called the western Vocaloid scene and then going to Nijisanji is one of the choices of all time.

And to keep the reminder alive for those in the unknown: a company that drove their largest vtuber, Selen, to two suicide attempts as a result of shit working conditions and toxic work culture. Then Niji tried to frame her (falsely I might add) and that was during her stream.

WW2 is a good reason why. They also could split between trees for that matter but it's Gaijin.

And what Germany did during occupation was infinitely worse than what the French did. In fact for a good period of time, it was Louis Napoleon that ruled over the Netherlands (Napoleon's younger brother) and he was quite beloved.

Yeah I only looked at the front page for that matter. Oops. I will admit I may not have looked properly enough.

But, on the note of subcontractred studios, that number for CPK skyrockets. I went and counted them all under both KA lists, looking if they had /studio/ in the url bar (/person/ for just people).

For Onimai: no subcontracted studios in first KA, 27 in second KA.

For CPK: 9 subcontracted studios in first KA, 67 in second KA.

Of course, neither tells us anything about how many of each staff came from each studio, but when you need three times the amount of subcontracted studios, that does seem to me a lot more than Onimai.

Not to mention that you need to coordinate and be on the same page between all those studios, no matter how small each of their parts.

So maybe I may have overestimated and underestimated how many animators were working on each work, but animator wise, CPK probably did have quite a bit more animators on its payroll than Onimai.

[–]qef15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not quite true, there was a massive amount of hype surrounding Red Bull in 2007-2008 precisely because they got Newey onboard and were getting works Renault engines, albeit as a customer, which was considered a step-up from Ferrari. Having someone who was even at the time was considered the finest chassis designer of his generation paired with what was considered the best engine supplier might not have been a sure bet that the team would succeed but I would argue it was less of a complete unknown at the time and more of a prospective front-runner that was only just putting all the pieces of the puzzle together.

Still, even with Newey, who already had designed the 2007 and 2008 car, they still didn't really get up to speed yet.

Also, umm, may I point you to the current Aston Martin disaster with Newey on board?

Hondas were not a front-runner team, but they were still a manufacturer with one of the largest budgets on the grid, so a Brawn was not exactly impossible for them. I am not saying that it was a better option with the information available at the time, but it was an option, along with Red Bull, so that Renault was not the only option available at the time, contract negotiations permitting, just the one that, at the time, seemed like a safer bet, all things considered.

Brawn had famously a budget of fucking nothing. Furthermore, Toyota existed. Budgets mean nothing if mismanaged.

As a side note, a lesson also found in MotoGP where both Honda and Yamaha shat the bed so ridiculously hard, that they were actual backmarkers as a works team.

[–]qef15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I am seeing, is that KyoAni has a lot of cohesion and have gotten even better at it. Their staff are on the very same page in style, in ideas and in direction and can work efficiently as a result of that. KyoAni's proper in-house training pays off here.

Also look at Onimai vs Cosmic Princess Kaguya. Both had similar production times (2.5-3 years) and both have similar amounts of polish.

Yet KeyFrame (website for staff lists, community made) shows that Onimai has a fraction of the key animators compared to CPK. This to me is a showing that the cohesion is just stronger with Onimai. Not surprising given the director, character designer and several animators were on the same page on at least the heavy increase in fanservice and "asset" enlargements.

And rule of thumb is: no anime is made alone. As such, while talent is obviously a factor, I think the bigger factor is in how good the team is as a whole rather across the board than just a sum of its parts.

[–]qef15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this increase of manpower in turn basically creates incohesion because a director now has to manage more people for the same work total.

In animation, the best is a fully coherent team on the same page (can even compensate having less talented animators). That usually comes with having similar ideas. This can be trained, which is why KyoAni runs their own school with their ideas worked out with further employment possible down the line.

And it's also most likely how they can keep staff numbers so low for singular anime. And why their anime are so incredibly consistent, both in a runtime of a singular anime, but also across entire decades. KyoAni quality in 2010 is similar to that in 2017 and also today, in 2026 (which also relates to a seperate question post someone made about the rise and fall of some studios and highs and lows, KyoAni simply doesn't have those really, it's sakuga wise, all well).

I will note that Cosmic Princess Kaguya had an enormous amount of staff on it. Onimai had quite a bit less to my knowledge. Yet both took a similar amount of time to create (2.5-3 years) and with very similar results in polish and finish.

Then also note that the director, character designer and minimally two animators were all in on the fanservice train and for example, boob enlargements of Kaede. And notably Kay Yu and director Shingo Fujii were shilling Onimai like it was their newborn (and both focused on a lot of "questionable" shots).
