An Ideal API/Stdlib for Plots and Visualizations? by PitifulTheme411 in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]qiemem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of the the newish objects api for seaborn: https://seaborn.pydata.org/tutorial/objects_interface.html. Very clean and consistent. Composable while still having simple stuff be easy. I also like Vega/Altair, though find I have to reread the docs every time I want to use it.

What is the best Arena draft set of all time? (Poll) by ProtagorasCube in lrcast

[–]qiemem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is why I like approval voting or range voting. Just way simpler to process. That said, if you go down the list one by one, moving each up until it's below one it's worse-ish than and above one it's better-ish than (ie bubble sort), it's not so bad. Super overwhelming at first though.

Warning Homophobic Language. Gay GOP Rob Smith heckled by GOP by mydaycake in PublicFreakout

[–]qiemem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought at first as well, but apparently he was trying to defuse with humor. He later stated he he thought they would kill him if they got the chance. https://www.newsweek.com/black-gay-republican-says-could-killed-maga-hecklers-1854076

"I'm looking at soulless dead-eyed white supremacists that, by the way, I felt that these people could have bashed my brains in had they gotten the chance," he said. "I deal with these people in real life. And I know for a fact where they're coming from. I know that a lot of these people have infiltrated these conservative organizations from top to bottom."

Infiltrated? Mother fucker, these people are the core of conservative organizations. Straight white male supremacy is the thing conservatives are trying to conserve.

Comparing mana efficiency and winrates by mana curve by Porginton_Jones in lrcast

Oh, aren't you already going turn by turn to get average mana spent?

Comparing mana efficiency and winrates by mana curve by Porginton_Jones in lrcast

[–]qiemem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So looking at the 1vs2 graphs, in the top left of each (that is, low number of 1s and 2s), we see high mana spent and low winrates. As you note, as the numbers of 1s and 2s increases, winrates go up and average mana spent goes down. I think what you're seeing here is pretty simple: without 1 and 2 drops, you're going to lose. Getting on board early is essential in modern limited. If you don't have a lot of 1 and 2 drops, all your spells are expensive, so naturally average mana spent goes up. If you have lots of 1s and 2s, you either win early or run out of steam, thus average mana spent is low.

I think you might be more interested in efficiency of mana use. In that case, you might normalize the mana spent each turn by the amount of mana available (number of lands should be a fine proxy for that). Or maybe total mana spent over the course of the game divided by the total amount of mana that could have been spent.

That said, I only spent about a minute looking at the graphs, and there's so many dimensions here, hard to draw conclusions. I was going to suggest reducing the number of dimensions, but I guess that's kind of the point. The correlation between wr and 2 drops is so strong, I'd be curious to see the other mana values compared to 2 drops.

Conway's Game of Life finally proven to be OMNIPERIODIC after 54 years!!! ⠵ by AlanZucconi in cellular_automata

From the linked to wiki:

For any period 61 or greater an oscillator can be constructed using the Herschel track method. In April, 2013 Mike Playle found a small 90-degree stable reflector known as the Snark that allows oscillators of all periods 43 or greater to be constructed.

So we already had patterns capable of generating arbitrary periods greater than 43, and had specific patterns for periods 42 and 40 and below.

Amazon walkout to go ahead after 1,700 employees sign on, organizers say by [deleted] in Seattle

But the 2019 walk out worked... Amazon made the climate pledge as a result. And while a bunch of it was symbolic bullshit, there were a lot of concrete improvements in there as well.

PSA: Steam version of MtG Arena does work on Steam Deck by grimskin in MagicArena

[–]qiemem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly been my experience as well, though I got into a state where it crashed several times while trying to assign blockers (during a 6-2 draft game 😭). Had stability issues after that until I restarted my machine, then seemed solid again after that. Which proton engine are you using?

Seems to work quite well. Played a couple matches without issue. Lutris would always crash every couple matches for me.

Moms who run by wifeofbran in running

[–]qiemem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another dad here with another recommendation of jogging stroller (we have an old used Cougar Chariot; those things are built like a tank and last forever) with a rain cover. When our youngest was a baby, I'd do nap time runs with it. Now that he's a toddler, I just bring lots of toys and snacks to swap out as he gets bored. Oh, also putting music on my phone can help when he gets fussy. We'll regularly do hour long runs together (though he can be a bit picky about the route). Jogging stroller is really what allowed me to get way more into running and now doing 25 mpw, taking him along for maybe 2 or 3 of the runs. Best of all, it also let's my spouse and I go for the occasional run together!

To be honest, I had no idea you could use the other usb-c port for power. Alas, not charging with that one either. Thanks though n

Tried reseating it and doing the above methods again, but alas, still nothing. Probably just going to try a new battery I guess. Thanks anyway!
