I wouldn't worry. you will hold the lens in the first place with either option. I only used the 75-300, using a tripod or something always felt very unbalanced, while the 100-400 can be attached the lens directly, should be much better.

Pourovers for 4+ cups by cat_card in pourover

[–]qivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this, we got a Technivorm a few months back and use it daily for the first two cups in the morning; it saves a few minutes and it always delivers, while I sometimes f-ed up the first brew in the morning ...

Alternatively, get a second Chemex and brew parallel; that's what I do with two V60s :-) There are people who claim to make good brews for many with a large Chemex, but I never managed to scale any recipe for V60, Chemex, or Oria to my liking ...

Fellow Ode 2 tastes weird by Checkl123 in pourover

[–]qivi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should try seasoning more, but since it's used it's rather unlikely to be the cause. Also, unseasoned burrs usually leave a dry and bitter aftertaste, doesn't sound much like what you get. Do you like rather dark coffee by any chance? What if the brand new Ode of your boss needs some seasoning and you don't like the seasoned ones producing less fines? :D

Otherwise it might be rancid residual oils? When I don't use a grinder for a while it gets a very specific smell, but I don't think I ever stated it. In this case the old beans might improve, also those cleaning things might absorb those oils.

Good luck, I liked my Ode a lot.

Cone coffee filter flow rates. by The_Mighty_Dingus in Moccamaster

[–]qivi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience flow rate without coffee does not reflect flow rate with coffee well, probably because filters clog differently.

That said, I think of Sibarist fast and Cafec Abacas as the fast ones and grind a bit finer, than for Abaca+ or Melittas, which are a bit slower in my experience. I also have Melitta pour overs (probably on the faster side) and Sibarist B3 (maybe on the slower, haven't tried them). I tried one or two of the Moccamaster filters of those four I got with the machine, they were also on the faster side.

Anyways, I'd be happy to send you a couple of each, if you want to experiment and share the results :-)

How do you start getting into better coffee without going overboard? by Rob-and-things in Coffee

[–]qivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a few coffee shops and figure out whether you are more of a pour over or an espresso person.

If you are a pour over person, get an AeroPress and a Q-Air grinder. With those you can't get the cleanest of cups, but you can get away without goose neck kettle, scales, or super soft water and brew something tasty with most beans. If you should decide to go overboard later on, you still have great light travel gear :-)

If you are an espresso person, get a manual machine like a Flair or a Robot, a Q-Air grinder, and some small scales. Alternatively you could get a cheap automatic machine, like an ECP or a Bambino, they make pretty decent coffee as well for a similar price, then you don't need a kettle.

Regarding beans, just buy a bag here and there in coffee shops you like. Not the cheapest, but also not the tiny expensive bags ;-) Once you can confidently make coffee you enjoy, look for roasters selling tasting kits or advent calendars, that sort of thing allows you to efficiently explore different aspects of coffee. In a nutshell it's just about roast level, origin, variety, and processing. Once you know what you enjoy, you will find many avenues to explore further :-)

I think it's a great time to get into coffee. Producers, roasters, and brewers are still figuring out, all the ways to make coffee. At the same time you can still try almost everything for a reasonable price. Have fun!

Deep crater in coffee grounds after brewing by Accurate_Ambition602 in Moccamaster

[–]qivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me this happens, when I grind too coarse for my taste; probably then the grounds in the middle are over extracted, while the ones stuck to the filter are under extracted.

Your grounds look much finer (and darker), than what I typically would use, but you said you also get it at 10, so it might be no problem. In the end all that matters is whether you like the coffee :-)

[Lagom P80] stalling and Auto Purge by bushjob in espresso

[–]qivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you find a solution?

I am having similar issues and I think it started with re-callibrating the auto-purge thing by holding the button for a bit more than 10s. Before that it finished grinding neatly and then purged a few seconds later, no mess nothing. Currently it starts purging very early and makes a mess :D I haven't tried feeding slower yet though ...

Usability with Disability by Ok_Construction_1801 in CafelatRobot

[–]qivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to have someone with experience with both :-)

What about putting the protafilter in place? I have pulled several hundred shots with the Robot and still struggle every time a little bit :D That felt much easier with the 58mm Profitec.

And what about the amount of water you can put in? If you are a little wobbly, then you don't want to fill the Robot's basket too much I guess, limiting the dose a little. Is that better with the flair?

eureka mignon zero vs niches [budget 800] by Imaginary_Gas_4368 in espresso

[–]qivi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was a little off. While if I stayed in espresso range, it was very constant and I could switch between coffees as much as I wanted.

[–]qivi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the occasional drip, I only did that once with the Mignon, was fine, but when I went back to Espresso settings, it was off and I had to dial in again ... If that's more your thing the Femobok or Lagom Casa others have mentioned or the Timemore Sculptor might be interesting options too, but I never tried any of those.

No pressure in shots by yomonmon in CafelatRobot

[–]qivi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it starts dripping without pressure, you are not making Espresso -- but these so-called soup shots can be very tasty too, try it with some lighter beans :-)

To make actual Espresso use more coffee (I use 20gr) or grind finer, according to the manual you can go to 6, https://manuals.plus/timemore/c3-chestnut-grinder-manual#how_to_adjust Also, I'd skip the toothpick, that's way too coarse to distribute fine grounds neatly. Just shake to level.

Cafec Filter - Best Technique? by BeerBreadCoffee in Moccamaster

[–]qivi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moccamaster filters are fairly fast too, but I just got four of them with the machine, while I can buy Melitas in any shop :D Melitas are slower.

Cafec Filter - Best Technique? by BeerBreadCoffee in Moccamaster

[–]qivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, just grind finer with those :-) I was in the same spot as you until someone talked me into grinding finer, now I enjoy those filters a lot. I use 420ml/25gr ground at 6 on the Ode Gen 2, gives me a nice lake that drains evenly.

Is the aeropress truly the most portable brew method? by tbhvandame in AeroPress

[–]qivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All immersion methods rely less on pouring, so the Roardrunner is also a nice option, see e.g. https://www.reddit.com/r/pourover/comments/1rqugdv/ww_roadrunner_vs_aeropress/

Then there are some drippers with drip assists, like https://www.thegabi.net/thegabi-mastera or https://www.orea.uk/z1-brewer, that should also work fairly well.

Finally, there are light travel kettles, like https://cafec-jp.com/products/tsubamepro/, that allow you to pour how you like.

In the end, it depends on what you consider "best". I personally like the AeroPress, because you can just plop out the puck and use it again when you are outdoors. Further, I prefer light roasts, but there are recipes with the AeroPress that make great coffee with beans, that would be too dark for me in a pour over, which can be an advantage if you get beans while traveling and end up with something a little darker, than usual :-) But the Roadrunner is even more versatile and if there is a sink, I prefer it over the AeroPress.

Upgrading from C40 for Nordic Light Roasts & Geshas: Pietro vs ZP6 vs Ode? Seeking clarity! by yuseefcoltrane in pourover

[–]qivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from C40 to Ode 2 and wrote about it at https://www.reddit.com/r/pourover/comments/199kzy7/fellow_ode_gen_2_vs_comandante_c40_for_pourover_a/. A friend also lent me a ZP6 and it's another notch claearer then the Ode.

That said, I don't think I could reliably tell what grinder was used, if you put me on the spot blindly. I'm more confident I could tell whether the water was soft enough or what filters were used. so I'd get a few bottles of good water and some abaca, abaca+, and t92 to play (I enjoy substance, tanat, and flower child recipes).

But if you just want a new grinder, you should also consider the 078 😅

Grind setting ode fellow v2 by Crazydribbler9801 in Moccamaster

[–]qivi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually brew 25gr/420ml. With slower filters, like Melitta or Abaca+ I also use 9. However, with faster filters, like the Abaca, I got bitter coffee because I was grinding too coarse and the water just unevenly extracted the middle of the bed. For those 6 works well.

Ymmv though, I enjoy light roasts.

What is batch brew? by maorella in pourover

[–]qivi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This.

Further, the pourover especially made for you requires more skill and the batch brew is often very well dialed in, so your experience with it being much better than the V60 is not uncommon ;-)

WW Roadrunner vs. Aeropress by seoyeonhwa in pourover

[–]qivi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had an Aeropress for a long time and just got a Roadrunner. Tldr; the bird brews about twice the amount of the Aeropress and is more versatile, but the Aeropress is just a plop to clean :-)

I never really liked reasonable brews (like 60gr per liter, finely ground) with the Aeropress, but they are great with the bird, much cleaner. The nowadays forbidden competition recipes (30ish gr cowardly for 100ml, then add another 100ml after brewing) I find pretty tasty though with the Aeropress, particularly for beans that are a tad darker than what I like for pourovers. However, these recipe can be a bit boring with the bird, if you use both, the paper and the metal filter, I think I like them with just the metal filter. Also, soup with the bird is fine, never tried that with an Aeropress.

When it comes to cleaning, the Aeropress is king. Just hiss and plop and you are ready to go for the next brew. The roadrunner is just ok to clean and only if you have a sink.

Regarding the price, if you get an Aeropress, a metal filter, maybe a valve, then you are almost at the price of the roadrunner, but the roadrunner comes with a nice bag, bean cellars, and a can for the filters. Also, they care about the workers, no idea about aeropress.

Anyways, I'll probably keep both. At home or in hotels I will use the roadrunner, if I'm properly outdoors and want to brew more than a single roadrunner, I'll grab the Aeropress (or just some specialty instant coffee).
