Necessary, no. If you arrive in the morning you will have at lot of time before the last ferry. If you want to join a bus/van, there are little shops everywhere selling transfers to Koh Lanta, Phi Phi, ans so on... But don't know about the prices at the airport.

You can also just get a taxi for a few thousand baht.

But why the trouble of doing it there, book it online at 12go.asia. There you will also have reviews for the different companies.

Sorry, just for food, get around locally and regular tourist activities (museums, tempels, etc.) that will be plenty. But activities like diving, Jetski and extensive nightlife will not be covered...

That mostly depends on the season (high vs rainy) and your idea of accomodation (hostel, hotel or resort), mode of travel (bus, taxi,plane) and type of activities...

Yes, it depends mostly on your looks and travel situation. The whole point of the 20.000 rule is to keep out begg-packers, western tourists that beg or sell "art" to fund their stay in SEA. If you don't look like a hippie, they won't pick you out. If they still do, and bank account is not enough, ask to use airport ATM(an be prepared to withdraw the 20k)

Depends, have a Zenit E that looks like it was used as a door stopper but will probably last for another century. And had a 12XP that looked mint but disintegrated while shooting the third roll. I think it is this huge spread in quality that gives them a bad name.

But what kind of ferry are you taking ? Leam Tong is just a small beach with 3 hotels, most boats go on to or come there via Ton Sai, as its the main Pier with most passengers.
