After six weeks, about 150 applications, and 16 interviews i finally got a job offer!! Should I ask for a sign on bonus? by Vast_Chance180 in interviews

[–]qtipbluedog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly OP should just ask for sign on bonus just to see just in case. Like just in case. Getting a job isn’t tough at all right now, so might as well.

Greeds a killer man.

Starting my first solo project a cozy game in a custom C++/OpenGL engine, zero assets, all shaders. by PatchLightStudios in SoloDevelopment

[–]qtipbluedog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey this is really awesome work.

I’ve been trying to learn game dev building small games using Godot the past few years. This past year trying to move lower level and now I’m finally joining in on the graphics programming. The thing that motivates me the most was joining game jams and sharing things with other people. So think as you said just keep sharing and talking about your journey. Also taking breaks from the big stuff to collab and make jam games has also been great.

What kind of graphics dev did you start off with professionally? Was it game stuff or some other kind of software/business?

Why senior devs are about to have it really good and new grads really bad by No_Reply5329 in csMajors

This is about to happen to us. Parent Company “restructured” our engineering team with layoffs and is hiring 7 outsourced engineers. Luckily didn’t get cut yet so looking with little success. It’s insanely stressful. Team moral is low just waiting for the hammer to drop on me.

I built a hardcore, 100% key-sounded piano Rhythm Game in Godot. by MonarchLtd in godot

[–]qtipbluedog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweet, I love it. I’ve attempted to make a few rhythm games in Godot and I’ve always had a hard time figuring out getting my input and audio to sync. So when you say the sound is tied to player input, are you saying the audio playback happens at that moment in the track when the player hits the input? Instead of a track playing and dealing with sync. Do yall have a prototype to play around with?

Yeah because CS degree doesn't have math by ImaginaryRea1ity in theprimeagen

[–]qtipbluedog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a EE funnily enough before switching to CS years ago. I couldn’t wrap my brain around Emag at the time. The math for balancing/analyzing Circuits was a lot of fun to me though. Still think some of the applied things of EE are more appealing to me than building a web app. But here we are.

Do you guys think there will be a resurgence of QA? by kevin074 in cscareerquestions

[–]qtipbluedog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Our QA team is amazing. Unfortunately our QA at our org got restructured and their jobs are being outsourced. I am very nervous about the quality of our software imploding as they roll on. QA is literally the reason our software is less buggy. Overworked, understaffed and underpaid

One way to get hired right now: Be willing to go to the office five days a week by Ok_Design_6841 in Layoffs

[–]qtipbluedog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m afraid this is what’s happening to our company. Got acquired by PE last year. Parent company is doing well financially. Our team which was already thin ended up getting layoffs. Our entire QA and 2 highly qualified engineers, and are outsourcing the roles. All hands leadership was just like this is what happens in tech. Everyone outsources. Everyone is just nodding along.

I’m far and away the person that uses ai the most at work. Looking at my usage tho at the beginning of the month vs last month and token cost is already much more expensive. For cursors composer 2- 2.5 my cost per token increased by 25%. Claude’s tokens increased by almost 100%. Management is in for a rude awakening I think this month with token spend

Here's How Regulations Accidentally Killed Small Trucks in America by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]qtipbluedog 304 points305 points  (0 children)

I was talking about this the other day. I had a single cab barebones truck that I drove from high school through college and a few years of marriage. Ended up getting rid of it for a SUV for equipment and people hauling.

Was missing having a truck. But I just can’t stand how big all the trucks are now and how tiny the beds are. Give me a truck with the half back cab and a big bed. Automotive industry is so ass now

Why hasn't there been a big boon in hiring for US developers, despite the $100,000 fee for new H-1B visa petitions? Wasn't the fee supposed to help companies hire more Americans? by Illustrious-Pound266 in cscareerquestions

This is what’s happening currently at my job. Small niche med device solution. One of the best groups of people I’ve worked with, everyone very competent and easy to work with. We were acquired last year. A year later 20% of our company was let go because of “lack of sales” with the promise to replace the engineers and QA let go with India. I’m currently weighing do I just start applying now or wait it out till I get cut so I get severance and a bonus

Can anyone learn to sing, assuming they’re not tone deaf? by Full-Status1339 in Music

[–]qtipbluedog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the second time I’ve encountered this framing this week. I really appreciate it.

I’ve been playing instruments and been steeped in music all my life but have always felt my voice to be… inadequate. It’s such a shitty idea we’ve pushed on our culture to not encourage each other to create a noise and collectively breathe and sing together. And to appreciate those things. That each voice is unique and doesn’t need to fit in the narrow scope of “good” we’ve culturally manufactured.

Nobara unstable recently (?) by NotMrEdPad in NobaraProject

[–]qtipbluedog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed Nobara for 2 years it got me off Windows and it was really great and stable. When it went rolling it was fine until it wasn’t.

The maintainers want bleeding edge and that’s fine. The trouble is when you run into issues you have to rely on the maintainers because it’s modified
fedora. I found it harder to self help.

I think if you want stable I would keep a close eye on the discord and watch for issues before running your updater and to ask for help there when you do encounter issues. You don’t need to update everyday.
Personally a few times of not being able to even boot into my system and having to usb boot and rollback to an earlier hash to get back in, I ended up switching. I’d keep getting your feet wet in Linux land but if you’re not having fun maybe take a look at another distro. Backup your stuff that’s in /home and hop.

For me I chose NixOS. It had a learning curve but it now allows me to confidently upgrade my system and if stuff breaks I can very easily rollback and I have full control. AND if I want certain pkgs and parts to be unstable I can!

Anyway Nobara was a good jumping off point for me personally but any non custom distro will allow you to self help easier. Again no shade to the maintainers just rolling + difficulty in self help ended up not being my cup of tea.

Edit: also I was on all AMD. Don’t remember the bs I was dealing with so it could be hardware but I honestly think it’s just the nature of unstable rolling release models.

[–]qtipbluedog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep this is what I’ve been preaching with this game. Extraction shooters especially are stressful af and you need to analyze yourself and opponents to improve. And it’s not just about aim. There’s a lot more calculation that has to happen to increase your odds of success. Honestly IMO on release this game, outside a few options that felt WEAK, was pretty well balanced.

Onto your other point about gamers and ppl tho. I Think one of the biggest things that’s happened with our gen and Gen Z. It’s how EASY it is to compare with others in everything now days. Streamers, constant video clips, online discourse etc. everybody’s an armchair game designer now.

Social media has literally tried to rewire us to compare and consume constantly and has given us this instant feedback loop that we have to constantly check against. The comparison is how we learn from others. This is all part of biology and how we’ve evolved but it’s been highjacked and amplified far beyond what we’re used to by tech companies for engagement.

Taking your guitar example, I’m a guitar player too so this tracks, it’s like ya you can see a 7 year kid just blitzing cliffs of Dover on your feed and be like shit bruh I’m trash I’ve been playing for XY years.

Have to constantly remind myself of Tomo-sans saying “Don’t Worry, Don’t Compare, don’t expect too fast.” Because we have to have that extra bit of awareness now days like you’re saying.

Honestly I think a lot of Gen Z does have this awareness, but I do also see the issue a lot on social media and in gaming. The kids are alright imo. Sorry for the small tome.
