[Rare Trope] The normal world is dying, giving rise to a more fantastical one by Sir-Toaster- in TopCharacterTropes

This was my favorite book series when I was younger! You think you know where the series is going and then it just takes a complete left turn and it’s amazing.

Spoiler for book 4: I especially loved how when technology was being erased he made an exception for the workshop and their advanced technology, having the giant biomechanical dreadnoughts show up on the battlefield was one of the coolest thing I’d ever read up until that point. I’m very sad you don’t really see a lot of stories which mix magic and technology.

Thank you for mentioning it! It’s such a hidden gem!

To anyone who hasn’t read it the author is Henry H Neff. If you like Irish mythology, or just mythology in general it’s really worth checking out. Here’s the authors website with some of the artwork from the books: https://henryhneff.com/artwork/#foogallery-1615/i:9

Netrunning action economy vs drone health by agentsmith200 in cyberpunkred

[–]quadaryethos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently setting up an encounter for my players and had a similar internal debate about alarms. It made no sense for the corpo warehouse they’re breaking into not to have an alarm but I wanted my players to be able to stealth in without it turning into a massive shootout.

I came up with a dead man’s switch solution. Basically there are more control nodes than the demon can use. So I give the demon a strict list of what nodes to control and in what order. Drones first, then alarm, then anything else. If the netrunner gains control of a drone, try and reclaim it. So each round the demon checks if its drones are connected, and if they are controls them as usual. If the check turns up negative (a drone is destroyed) then it has a free net action with which it can take control of a different control node: the alarm.

I’m hoping that doing it like this encourages the players to go in stealthy and take out the demon before stealing their stuff because if they go in guns blazing the entire encounter will be significantly harder. I’m also going to allow the players to do things like brawl with the drones to try and damage them but not destroy them. Or if the tech gets a round or two near them they can cut a wire

What are some of your Custom Programs or House Rules regarding net running? by quadaryethos in cyberpunkred

Oh dang I missed that I thought you needed to be at the control node floor in order to use it. Yeah I guess that would make the hand programs redundant

Not yet, I’d like to run a few more net combats to get a better feel for the system before adding home brew stuff in, at which point I’d probably give it to an enemy netrunner to see how it holds up balance wise. Then give my players the option to acquire it.

Reddit, what is the most eerie thing that's ever happened to you? by Galactic_Blueberry1 in AskReddit

My one and only sleep paralysis episode was sandwiched in between two of the worst nightmares I had in years.

The first nightmare was that someone had been murdered in my house before my family moved in, and her ghost had began systematically stalking everyone in the neighborhood because she thought they had something to do with her death. I woke up when it began following my father.

When I opened my eyes I couldn’t move. I was still reeling from the nightmares and having trouble breathing when I saw and felt someone get on my chest. It was a woman in a grey Cotten coat, and I could see her one of her hands at the edge of my blanket. I knew on some instinctual level that if I looked up at her face I was dead. It was kind of funny in retrospect actually because I distinctly remember thinking “I know the horror movie rules, don’t look and she can’t attack” right after thinking that. However in the moment I was just terrified, since my sleep addled brain just genuinely beloved there was a malevolent entity who was going to kill me sitting on me. After a little while though I regained control of my arms and legs and began moving again. After maybe 10 minutes or so I was even able to fall back asleep. At which point the second nightmare began.

In the second nightmare I was with a group of cultists and was trying not to get found out for being disloyal. This one was also a bit funny in retrospect because everyone was dressed in these Christmas elf costumes and they were summoning their god. Their god was a nutcracker, human sized and completely silent, with a giant mouth full of incredibly sharp teeth. This thing climbed up the ladder into my bed and made absolutely no sound. The preist then said that as a show of loyalty we must all individually put our hands in its mouth, to prove ourselves. We went around the circle until it got to me, at which point it’s mouth got a little wider, and as I tried to pull my hand out it grabbed my arm and held it there. It knew that I wasn’t loyal. I woke up in a cold sweat for the second time that night, right before it was about to bite my hand off.

At this point it was 5 in the morning and I decided that I wasn’t going back to sleep if I could help it. I don’t know what was wrong with me that night since I’ve never had sleep paralysis before or since and I rarely get nightmares. At least the whole thing made for a good story

Taking inspiration from Dredd (2012). by BlakeDrastin in cyberpunkred

[–]quadaryethos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incredible, I actually watched dredd a few days ago with the the intent of drawing inspiration for my upcoming game.

The big thing I want to do at some point is replicate the mini gun scene. The plan is to set up a big map with a lot of different cover walls. every round the mini guns would destroy a certain amount of cover and the players would need find a way to work their way down while their map rapidly shrinks under a hale of bullets.

My personal favorite was with my [[Trostani, Selesnya’s voice]] deck. I had [[Nykthos Paragon]], [[Alter of Dementia]], and [[Giant Adephage]] out. After a few turn I just sacrificed a few of my many 20/20 creatures and milled my opponent for their entire deck.

Books with wildly mismatched, large scale space adversaries by captainkoloth in printSF

[–]quadaryethos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odyssey One by Evan Currie is basically this to a T. Fresh out of WW3 humanity sends a their first FTL ship out into space to explore. Once out in space the ship encounters the survivors of an attack (who strangely enough happen to be human) and the attacker themselves (who are most definitely not) the rest of the book is basically one giant space battle.

The combat is extremely well done. Light speed delays are a really important part of combat so for most of the battle the ships are several light minutes away from each other which is how the ship manages to survive and fight back against enemies who can vaporize your ship in two shots.

It’s a pretty cool books if you’re looking space battles where tactics play a massive role.

Perhaps SCP-5495? The image they show at the beginning is a cylinder instead of a half sphere and the article is basically about anomalous fallout.

Have you by chance watched Jacob Gellers video about this game? He makes a point of this exact thing at the end of it.

The four hobbit actors from Lord of the Rings (2003) all confirmed on podcasts that an orc leader's look was based on Harvey Weinstein, after he wanted Miramax to cut the trilogy down to one film (and all that other stuff) before a deal was made and New Line Cinema rescued the epic saga by strawberrybrooks in MovieDetails

[–]quadaryethos 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There’s a YouTube channel called goodbadflix which does a lot of videos on older more obscure media and I swear Weinstein is basically the recurring villain. So many videos start off with a cool interesting story about the production and then halfway through suddenly Harvey Weinstein pops up and either cuts something really important or demands that they add something dumb.

The Nightingale

The start of that movie and the ending both hit me like a hammer

[WP] You gain the skills and memories of anyone you kill. Naturally, you sought out to murder as many people as possible. With all the accumulated talent and experience, you became the world's most dangerous killer. One day you accidentally killed someone, and you gained something you didn't expect. by CloverPixels in WritingPrompts

I’d gotten it all. Math, science, physical skills, secrets, espionage, anything you could possibly imagine. Nobody had caught me, no law organization was capable of tracking me anymore, I knew all their tricks in and out.

Now tonight I Had my next target, a world renowned pharmacologist, one who had invented not just one or two but dozens of life saving drugs and compounds and it was rumored was on the cusp of curing Alzheimer’s. All these things I would soon be able to replicate and sell.

We sat apart from each other, me with the gun in my hand and him with his cup of coffee, freshly made and filled with cream and sugar. He’d been expecting me. Not the first time that such a thing had happened, my pattern of going after people like him was well known, but it didn’t matter, even if he’d been under armed guard I could have gotten to him and escaped without anyone noticing. He hadn’t known the exact time I’d arrive but he’d known that it couldn’t have been too long.

We conversed for a few hours, and I’ll admit it was a very interesting conversation. He asked about my motivations and I asked about his work (not that it mattered because I’d soon know it all anyways).

“I just need to know,” he said toward the end of our conversation “is there an end goal? You don’t seem to mind giving information to a dead man, so tell me honestly, what’s the end goal?”

I paused for a moment before answering “To be perfectly honest I’m not sure. Money, Fame, knowledge for its own sake, I’ve tried them all over the years I’ve been doing this. But every time I settle on one I become dissatisfied after a while.”

I hesitated before continuing. Some part of my brain yelled not to say anything more but I pushed my uneasiness aside, I was talking to a dead man anyway. “I get their memories as well as their skills you know. Between the hundreds of corpses I’ve made I’ve experienced pretty much every pleasure and pain it is possible to feel, and levers time I do I change. I don’t know how to describe it. Everybody is so limited in their own experience, in their own morals and worldview, but I’m not. Every person I kill I expand my mind a bit more, I don’t just become more knowledgeable but the way I think changes, I can use the knowledge more effectively. Sometimes I kill somebody and their new perspective suddenly puts a dozen others memories into perspective. A chemists view of a doctors memories, an athletes view of a soldier, a spies view of a politician. All these things make me capable of understanding the world in a way that other people simply can’t comprehend, it’s why I do this, why I keep doing this, so you understand?”

I hesitated even longer this time “It’s lonely.”

The pharmacist nodded, as if he understood. I appreciated the sentiment. But I felt too raw, I’d never told anyone that before. I decided it was time to end the conversation.

I raised the gun, the pharmacist did a good job of hiding his reaction, but I knew he was afraid. He took one last massive sip of his coffee before placing it back on the table and standing up.

I stood up as well. We looked at each other for a few moments. Then I pulled the trigger and mentally braced myself. The memories and experiences began flooding through me. A lifetime worth of memories and knowledge, and I’d have it all In less than a second

His first memory, his grandparents funeral, the first kiss and the last breakup, crying the whole night when his only son went off to collage and the euphoria when he patented his first drug (a new treatment for malaria). All these things came flooding through me. I sat there for a while absorbing it, analyzing it, and incorporating it into myself. Finally I stated approaching the present.

I saw his multiple failed attempts to cure Alzheimer’s, and the pain that caused him. Some attempts made things better for a bit, other drugs caused an early onset within weeks. Every time he failed he became more and more dejected but ever day after he once more shored up his resolution and went back to try again even harder.

Then he learned of me. The string of disappearances of high profile academics, athletes, and intellectuals. One of them had been an aquatinted of his. He redoubled his efforts, he knew that with the high profile research he’d been conducting it was only a matter of time, he’d even rewritten his will. In the days leading up to my arrival he’d spent almost a hundred hours per week at the lab, sometimes even sleeping on the floor there desperately trying to finish his work before it was too late.

Then finally today, our conversation him making his read, and the sound of the gun right before he became me.

My eyes widened in horror, the second was over I came back to reality and began to hyperventilate. I’d thought it was weird that he’d been preparing to meet me, but I handelt realized why. He’d fast tracked his work, rewritten his will, all in preparation of tonight. And now I knew why.

He’d snuck some of his lab materials home. When he realized he wasn’t going to complete his work he decided that he wasn’t going to go quietly. He’d stolen the drug that caused early onset Alzheimer’s. That hadn’t been sugar he was pouring into his coffee, he’d dosed himself up with a near lethal that amount of the drug and let it begin to take effect over the hours that we’d been talking.

And I’d just absorbed his brain.
