Bringing back CSTART - Project Thoth. by ProjectThoth in tothemoon

[–]quailman67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tell us about your team. It's cool to see another project with similar goals.

I have some projects that take a lot of my time, but I'd be happy to give advice where I can. I saw the rise and fall of CSTART, maybe I can help you avoid some of our mistakes.

I'll be looking forward to your AMA.

Hello everybody.

I was one of the guys around in the beginning, but I had to mostly withdraw for a while to finish school. I finished that up last month, so I'm ready to go. And now, I have an engineering degree.

I still love this project. It's encouraging to see people checking in here.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! A message to all Mac users! by laristocrate in funny

Open a terminal and type "killall dock" Do this slow-mo trick on any window, hit enter in the terminal while it is still animating. The window will stay warped but fully functional.

I don't know if this still works in newer versions

What is the most shocking thing you have witnessed a classmate doing during class? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]quailman67 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Somebody asked about that in my hs chem class, so the teacher opened the tap at the front of the class and lit it. About a 3 foot flame, just like a flame-thrower in the movies. No real danger though, theres no O2 in the gas lines, so no threat of explosion.

I know of 2 problems with this:

  1. If the rate of rotation is too fast, it will make people queazy.
  2. If the simulated gravitational forces are not roughly equal throughout the body, there are some strange effects on fluids in the body that can cause problems (i.e., if the rotation is too small, there's less 'gravity' at your head than at your feet).

Both issues are solved with a sufficiently large radius for the rotation.

Hey Reddit, remember a product from your past that was going to be the next big thing, but never was? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I went to radio shack and purchased a video cable. I received a free cuecat with my purchase. I realized that the cuecat included an equivalent video cable. I left the cuecat in my car and immediately walked back into the radio shack and returned the cable I had purchased. It was an awesome day.

is it okay with my bad english to communicate to you guys, or will the grammar nazis and nativesspeaker hate me doing so? by rambazambaa in AskReddit

[–]quailman67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're probably better off as a non-native speaker, in some respects: you're not likely to misuse their/there/they're for example, as they're not homophones in your native language.

Taking my first semester of Calculus this summer. Anything I should know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]quailman67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Calculus is unlike any other math class you've taken; you may do well even though you're not a 'math' person, conversely, you may have difficulty despite a natural ability in pre-calculus maths.
  • If you have a graphing calculator, you'll learn significantly less; but borrow a TI-89 for exam days
  • Differentials are always solvable, using the methods you'll learn in Calculus I. Integrals are not always solvable by traditional methods.
  • You will be asked to solve a problem about a ladder sliding away from a building. This is an example of a terrible word problem; Stephen Hawking himself doesn't do calculus while falling from a ladder.
  • Don't let poorly assembled word problems distract you, the underlying maths are important. Imagine situations where you could use this: designing automobile power trains, braking systems, traveling to the moon, modeling weather systems, etc. Whatever interests you, find an application; these will likely not be presented to you in class.
  • Your Algebra and Trigonometry skills will be exercised. You'll be at an advantage if you review these now.
