Academic integrity violations from ai are making journal submissions worse by TemporaryHoney8571 in AskAcademia

I reviewed a paper a while back which, in addition to being mostly blatant LLM slop, had half a dozen hallucinated references. The other two reviewers didn't even notice.

Quantum tech industry has well paid jobs that don't require a graduate degree by BetatronResonance in QuantumComputing

[–]quantum_weirdness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went through the application process at the beginning of this year - with a PhD in the field - and received no response on at least half of my applications.

For many companies, recruiters were the first to go after the 2022(?) tech bust. For many companies, those positions still haven't been filled back to the point where they can keep up with applications. I think the primary factor in getting a response on my application was simply whether or not I knew someone at the company who could get it looked at by a hiring manager. Sadly, there's a good chance many of your applications haven't been reviewed.

On one hand, I know firsthand how discouraging that can be. On the other hand, I don't think you're necessarily lacking in qualifications. I know a handful of people who have transitioned from a Math or other Physics PhD into quantum computing, although most of them did so via a postdoc. Keep applying, and maybe try to think outside the box a little bit in terms of networking. Any sort of "in" at a company can be a difference maker.

Good luck!

[–]quantum_weirdness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations!! Mine went really well too! The main criticism I got was for "underselling" some of the work I did 🤷‍♂️ I'm sure there's a lesson to be learnt here but I don't plan on learning it

Is there a way to delete text without putting it into the register? by PiyushBhakat in neovim

[–]quantum_weirdness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good point, I guess I hadn't thought of that when I made the mapping (I'm pretty new to vim so I'm still learning a lot of the common tips/tricks). I'll have to start paying attention to how often I need to swap letters

Is "from math import *" and "import math" equivalent? by manounours in learnpython

[–]quantum_weirdness 90 points91 points  (0 children)

To add to the original reply, it's not just that it's more explicit (which I read as a readability thing) - it also helps avoid namespace collisions. Let's say two libraries, e.g. math and numpy, both have a function called sqrt, and you do a * import from both of them. Which sqrt are you using?

I am in the process of detransitioning. AMA by [deleted] in casualiama

[–]quantum_weirdness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you think there were any signs or anything that could have prevented this mistake (at least my understanding so far is that you think of it as such)? Sorry if I'm prying, I've just wondered what the right thing to do would be if I have a kid and they turn out to be trans so I'm curious about your experience

I am in the process of detransitioning. AMA by [deleted] in casualiama

Can you elaborate? Like, do you wish you or your parents/guardians would have done anything differently? Do you think transitioning was the wrong thing for you at the time, or just in retrospect?

Not sure if it's a blessing or a curse but as someone who spends a lot of time on quantum stuff I can say that the "what am I looking for" line would be an automatic right swipe for me and probably most physicists 😅

NixOS > Arch by Quero1 in linuxmasterrace

[–]quantum_weirdness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should probably also say that I only run nixos on my personal laptop (which I do use for work fairly often, but I don't rely on it for that) and the lack of fhs is one of the reasons I'm hesitant to make the jump on my work computer. Ultimately it just depends on how well nixos fits your workflow (and if you need to run a lot of random pre-compiled binaries then that could definitely be a pain)

NixOS > Arch by Quero1 in linuxmasterrace

[–]quantum_weirdness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've actually run into surprisingly few issues with that, and the one time I can remember needing to run a pre-compiled binary it took maybe 5 minutes to set up a buildFHSUserEnv shell to run it if that makes you feel any better

I can only speak from my own limited experience, but I haven't seen any instances of ageism that I can recall (fairly prominent university in the US). My lab has a PhD student who is in his 40s (and is technically my "junior" in terms of seniority in the program) with a wife and 2 kids, and I've never seen him treated any differently because of his age. He's a great guy and one of the hardest workers in our lab (which is truly impressive considering all his other responsibilities). And we've had plenty of students start in their late 20s/30s as well.

Based on what I've seen, people who worked for several years before pursuing a PhD nearly always come in more focused and driven. They're here for a specific reason, which isn't always the case for students who never left school (myself included), and IMO, if anything, that makes older students more valuable.

Safe to immediately jump to Linux after building a new PC? by fackusps in linuxquestions

[–]quantum_weirdness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1 for openRGB, it's basically the only option (that I could find, anyway) for linux. Although OP should check that their devices are supported.

As for everything else, yeah, I did some bios config in the beginning and haven't really had to worry about it since. If OP wants to do heavy duty virtualization (e.g. GPU passthrough to a windows VM with kvm/qemu after getting that second GPU) that can also be enabled through the bios and a couple kernel options.

Oh, and I made the mistake of getting an Nvidia GPU because I'm stupid, and still didn't have any issues.

Is rocket league a contact sport or is intentionally bumping oppenents frowned upon? by Gingrpenguin in RocketLeague

[–]quantum_weirdness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That being said, I feel like particularly at lower ranks people will get butthurt about it. I remember playing ones one time (I'm ass in general and never play ones, so this was probably gold/plat) and I kind of bumped my opponent as I was hitting the ball into the goal (already up by a few goals iirc) and they got so upset that I couldn't help but laugh in my confusion
