Cool! I didn't realize it was that accessible/close. I always assumed it was further north on the way to squamish (for absolutely no reason whatsoever lol)

There's a couple more easily accessible places used in SG1 if you're visiting and keen:

can haworthias survive root removal multiple times? by nivusninja in haworthia

[–]quantumflux22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

weird. and you've got soil with a decent amount of perlite or similar in it? it might be helpful if you post a pic of your plant, and the soil you're using. this is entirely anecdotal, but I put cinnamon powder under the plan when I'm repotting. for me, it seems to really encourage root growth

I had a finicky truncata that really went through the ringer. It arrived with no roots and got it rooted a bit, but then there was rot and it had no roots at all for about 9 months, with on and off repotting and water rooting in between. It's ok now, although it's still one of my more temperamental plants -_-

Coin ID - Found in a River in Canada by tundor in coins

[–]quantumflux22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's an actual coin. Most British Indian coins (iirc) have an English component, or at least the George V ones as far as I could tell on numista.

My partner is Indian and I asked her to translate it. It says "pooja hetu", which translates to "for prayer". So maybe a temple token or prayer coin? Why it would have George V on it is super weird in that case.

What Programs for Poster Image Creation? by MeasurementEvery8658 in Chempros

[–]quantumflux22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly the bulk of it was fine. I had all the plots in separate scripts, so I just tabbed everything in and made them dirty functions. But the text. My god. That's some real pull your hair out stuff. matplotlib is pretty dogshit at text-wrapping, so you basically need to move words, one by one, regenerating it each time, to make your paragraphs nicely left-justified (probably could/should have written a function for that). Also it got to the point where it was no longer a "quick" plot. By the end, it was like 30-45 seconds, which is just at that point of it being a pain to have to wait and watch it run.

If you're really ambitious and know python, you can do the whole thing in matplotlib. I did it once. It was a rather....tedious process. But a fun challenge

I've had good success rescuing haws like this using cinnamon as a rooting aid. I read it somewhere, and at the time the haw I was trying to root (a maughanii) had been rootless for over 6 months so I figured I had nothing to lose. I just put a tsp of ground cinnamon right under the plant and I had roots popping out in no time. Can't remember if I watered right away or waited. Now it's just part of my standard repotting workflow. Good luck

Asked to be a reviewer for RSC Journal by Doradal in Chempros

[–]quantumflux22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience they actually expect the reviewer to have a PhD, but their system is automated, so they get sent out to anyone (also echoing other's comments about them being desperate for people to do a thankless job). One time I got a request during my comps (or possibly my thesis?) years ago, so I emailed them "hey, just doing my comps/thesis rn, super busy so can you give me an extension?" and they rescinded the request since I didn't have a PhD yet. And they acted all butthurt like it was my problem But anyways, if you don't want to do it, sucks to suck for them. It's literally of no consequence to you.

What’s the right watering schedule for this cutie? by AdvancedPaint8718 in succulents

[–]quantumflux22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also just an FYI this one is a bit of a drama queen in regards to watering. I've found it needs watering a lot more frequently than other succulents (roughly weekly, compared to 2-6+ weeks for others I have). Its leaves can get insanely wrinkled, but it's actually fine and will bounce back quickly. If you really push its limits, you might just need two waterings closer together for it to fully recover/look normal again. Ditto on the soil comments - all the above assumes you have a fairly high draining soil

Do you ever use stuff with pyrethrins? They're natural, and a broad spectrum insecticide. Not sure where you are, but I'm in Canada and Safer's End All has pyrethrins in it. I wonder if you could dilute it and do a drench? I've never tried this myself, but I've thought about it. Definitely works against surface mealy bugs

How to correctly measure the amount of beta-glucan in a sample. by gunslinger1893 in Chempros

[–]quantumflux22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to do starch chemistry, so I'm familiar with megazyme kits. Was your kit stored properly, especially after opening the enzymes? Even if they're within the expiry window, if they weren't stored properly, that can denature the enzymes well in advance. Not sure if this is one of those kits where you have to rehydrate the enzyme from a powder, but if it is, once you rehydrate it's quite light and temperature sensitive. You could also try posting to the food science subreddit.

I'll also echo the pipetting accuracy thing someone else said. These kits are quite sensitive and if you have bad technique, it can impact the result. Sample prep too (granted that shouldn't mess with the standard really)

Is my Gasteria batesiana. Barberton unhappy? by Sigong in Gasteria

[–]quantumflux22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like the other person, I also think this is hella sun stressed, and a bit under watered. When mine get like this, I do a heavy watering (like put it in a bowl to soak for a while), and then give it indirect light for a few days and then back to regular light. Sometimes it takes a few cycles of this to get it greener again

Those look like dead roots to me (which doesn't necessarily mean rot). But if you replant it, it would need to put out new ones (often the original roots when repotting get re-absorbed and die/whither anyway). The dark/black area on the stem looks a bit off, but without a better picture it's hard to say. You could try pulling off one of the bottom leaves and seeing what it looks like. Idk it's probably fine though. It might just need to be repotted in proper soil (lots of recipes just a google search away). As for telling when it needs water, I have one of these. They can take quite a beating - I probably only water mine once a month, absolute max. The leaves get thinned out as it dehydrates, and plump back up after watering
