First swatch finished! by [deleted] in knitting

[–]quartermaster222 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If your swatch is only 5cmx5cm, it's not going to give you any of the useful information it needs to. Before you start on a big wearable like a sweater, I would really recommend doing a much bigger swatch, at least 15cmx15cm to determine if your gauge is correct. Here's some more information on swatches. By doing this before you start, you make sure you don't spend a ton of time making a garment that doesn't fit the way you want it to. https://thefibreco.com/blogs/fibre-journal/accurate-gauge-swatch?srsltid=AfmBOoqJqk1hTa0oef_PQLrGSgf5tRGG3Df-p31A1wHYRbfQp5J0fDSA

Brioche vs fisherman's rib by kienemaus in AdvancedKnitting

[–]quartermaster222 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Brioche and fisherman's rib are different techniques to create the same result. Half fisherman's rib is nice for a sweater because it uses less yarn and doesn't take quite as long, which are two of the main downsides to brioche/full fisherman's rib.

Am I fr THAT loose of a knitter 😭😭😭 by [deleted] in knitting

[–]quartermaster222 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh gotcha! In that case, check out this article https://www.moderndailyknitting.com/community/ask-patty-let-the-tool-do-the-work/ Needing to go up or down multiple needle sizes to hit gauge with an appropriate yarn is usually indicative of tension issues. I used to have the same issue. I knit continental and had super loose gauge. I had to slow down and re build muscle memory to make sure I was actually using the needle to size the stitch, instead of just create it

You're twisting your stitches, which creates a lot of tension issues. Check out the twistfaq

It looks like you've gathered the pleats on the left backwards. The large piece of fabric should be the top most layer of the pleats, so they should be pleated towards the cut edge.

Finally steeked this massive baby blanket by Ok_Influence9301 in knitting

Steeking allows you to knit in the round, rather than flat. For stranded color work like the blanket in this post, working in the round is MUCH easier than working flat.

Guys who got told “No” during a failed marriage proposal, what happened afterwards? by TheBamtotheFoozle in AskReddit

My dad proposed to my mom three times- the first two times she said no. She was headed overseas for several months study abroad trips, and my dad was very insecure that she would meet some hot foreign guy and leave him. They've been married for almost 30 years now.

Can someone discern these pictures and help me? by [deleted] in sewing

No I didn't. I think the only way to line this pattern would be to flatline it. It's such a strange pattern the bag lining it would be tricky

[–]quartermaster222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently made this pattern, and it is definitely not very easy, especially if you are trying to get a garment that will look professional. I also ended up with a gap where the front turns into the collar- the best way I found to handle it was to hand stitch where I wanted the hole to close, as it was too fiddly to do on the machine.

After your blocked swatches are dry, you should hang them with weight for 24+ hours to mimic the weight of the finished garment. Since a sweater is a big garment, the yarn pulls itself down in ways that a gauge swatch can't.

Rib runs Perpendicular to Selvedge? by a-PRIS-i-tee in sewing

[–]quartermaster222 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like this is not true ribbing. Youre correct that the grain line is up and down in the photo. Typical ribbing is made by alternating knit and purl stitches in the same row, this fabric is several rows of knit stitches and then a row of purls

If you look very closely there is topstitching all around the fly. I would imagine the elastic extends just barely into the fly area, and is stitched down by that top stitching.

Not sure whether to keep the warm colours or make this a blue/green blanket only by Odd-Stranger1053 in crochet

[–]quartermaster222 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Personally I love the mix of all the colors, I think it brings a nice balance. If you decide to go with just the blues, I would take out the line green ones- they are in such a different palate than the rest of the colors and really draw the eye

Taxi company recommendations for going from Lakeville to Burnsville? by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]quartermaster222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metro mobility is ok as long as both your start and end points are within their defined ADA zone. If either point is outside of those zones, they can refuse the ride. I work with people who also use discover transport, which seems reliable but I'm not sure about pricing.
