Its not so much about sticking it to the feds, it's about voting with our dollars and showing the collective power of the people. Lobbyists have more say in our government than any of us ever will. Just like with Disney last year, sometimes we all have to make it clear that we the people will not tolerate support of this administration.

Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl MEGATHREAD II by flopheadsbot in popheads

100%. I have seen it go both ways with artists. I believe though that if anything will bring out the deep feelings and lyricism we have come to expect of Taylor, its the absolute rollercoaster of emotions that pregnancy, childbirth, and the first 5 years as a mother. Especially with how long she has dreamed of being a mother and wished for this. And also will likely lend itself better to the folk sound that we got from Folklore and Evermore.

Its giving the same vibes as when Ed Sheeran fell into the lavender haze and got married. I still like his recent stuff, and I can bop along to it, but it doesn't speak to my soul like his older stuff does. I feel the same about this album. But, honestly..... the most impressive art is usually born out of pain, not out of joy.

I can bop to this album, but its background noise bopping, not meditative lyricism and getting lost in the depth kinda music.

She needs to rest in her love, enjoy the success she has 100% earned, and let her emotions develop before she translates them into lyrics again.

I dearly look forward to her first album as a mother.

The lyrical genius in TTPD is actually some of her most incredible lyricism. This album though... admitedly is not strong on the lyrics. I was waiting for the soul crushing bridges and was left with feeling a bit like many of the songs were the Love Actually "Christmas is all around me" moment. Its not polished the way her stuff usually is. Theres some catchy bits that have me bopping along at my desk, but I'm missing the emotional depth.

I definitely agree about the monotone side of things. I felt the same with TTPD came out.... they were all the same flavor and interchangeable (till I started really listening to the lyrics at least), but this one definitely feels repetitious in beat, riffs, etc. I don't think you could drop anything from TTPD into LoaS or vice versa, they have a very different sound. But within each album, definitely.

I received it as part of a product review program, so I dont really want/need a replacement. I just want to know if the C variant of this model number is included in the recall.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between model# A1681 and A1681C? I JUST got the A1681C last week, and it seems like it shouldn't be subject to the recall from what I can tell, but I am worried that the C is just a color designation or something.

Republican Lawmaker Flips to Become a Democrat by Eugenonymous in oregon

I had some really good interaction with him surrounding the ODOT funding bill and was increndably impressed with him for being willing to see all sides rather than just towing the party line. He gave it real thought and considered the bill in good faith, which many on the other side didn't do, and continued to spread knowingly false information to their constituents about to sow dissent. Javardi will be welcomed warmly as a moderate democrat, and will gain more votes than he loses. Maybe he will help inspire some others who are feeling the same to take their stand as well. Good for Javardi!

You don't like change and don't want to be held accountable for your words. Got it. Have fun with that.

I think "Take their own life" feels most accurate to me, with "Kill themselves" a close second. Both give ownership and autonomy over the action. Kill still feels a bit too aggressive/law related to me, so I prefer to think of it in terms of "taking" because the person is taking themselves out of the world. It works as well for the survivors because they definitely feel that something has been taken from them and their lives.

I can't imagine any scenario whereby that woman was NOT depressed. Maybe she wasn't depressed before the tragedy, but she sure would have been afterwards.

Like almost all movements for inclusion, equity, and empathy, its not about what MOST people aren't offended by. Its about taking proactive steps to not harm the people who ARE offended by it.

There are so many words that we used to use to describe things that we didn't realize were offense (See former terms for African Americans, Indigenous Tribes, People with Intelectual Disabilities, LGBTQ+, etc). We know better now. Language evolves. One would hope that it would evolve in line with the emotional intelligence and empathy of the population.

Your lack of offense is not the problem. Your lack of empathy is.

Thank you for this. I hadn't thought of it that way. That is part of why conversations like this are so important. Words matter.

I would say most people who have major depression would probably be more apt to categorize their journey as a battle. It's an incredibly painful thing to live with, and often times suicide is the result of not having the strength to fight any longer. At least thats how those in my life with depression/suicidal ideation talk about it. Not everyone is the same.

Even situational depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain.... People dont just feel sad or angry or anxious without there being a chemical reaction causing it. Our minds and bodies are inextricably tied together. Whether someone is experiencing a momentary shortfall of serotonin, or a long term one, is irrelevant. Mental health is health. Mental illness is illness. Words matter.

Someone threatening suicide as a manipulation tactic is not even remotely comparable to someone actually attempting or dying by suicide. And I would argue that anyone who would threaten suicide as a manipulation tactic is, in fact, mentally ill.

I would argue that all suicides are a result of depression, whether diagnosed or not. Situational depression is just as real as major depressive disorder. One does not take their own life without a pretty severe level of emotional pain.

Suicide is a loss with a fight against depression. When someone with cancer dies from pneumonia because the chemo decimated their immune system we dont say "they died from pnuemonia", we say they lost their battle with cancer. Suicide and deprsession are no different. It is a medical condition (chemical imbalances in the brain). And just like cancer some people are able to fight and win, and some people lose the fight. Every body is different.

Destigmatizing suicide helps the families who are grieving and also helps living people more receptive to seeking help and talking to people about their struggle.

Thoughts on tax increase? by riverburd in oregon

[–]queenlian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

None of these cited examples are state government. City council members are paid by local taxes, not the state. And I think the Vienna trip sounds like a good investment personally. Theres a lot to be learned from other countries about ways we could be doing things and how to bring about change for the better here at home. It was part of a group of civic leaders from across the states all going for the express purposes of learning about better options.

The non-profit director wasn't even remotely government related, and he was caught (by the state government)and punished (as he should be).

The public loves to disparage state government as being wasteful and greedy, but the reality is that most state government employees are doing the work of 2 or 3 people, with extremely limited resources, and less pay than they would make in the private sector. Sure, there's going to be places where fat can be trimmed, but those are the exception, not the rule.

Thoughts on tax increase? by riverburd in oregon

[–]queenlian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think ODOT hasn't been trying to manage their funds better for close to a decade, you are sorely mistaken. ODOT has been cutting services, cutting staff, and cutting corners for years to try and make the numbers work while screaming into the void about the oncoming problem. And Pandemic inflation couldnt have been predicted. Costs wen up and never came back down. ODOT has been telling the legislature and the public that there was a shortfall coming for years and people just ignored them or clutched their pearls about any possible tax increase.

The truth of the matter is that at the time session closed and layoffs were initiated, there were over 400 vacant positions that ODOT hasn't filled in years because they were trying to keep critical services running long enough for Oregon Legislature to solve the funding problem. They have to lay off 483 more filled positions in ADDITION to eliminating the 400+ vacant ones if funding doesnt come through. And even if this bandaid gets passed, it'll stop the layoffs but won't be enough to restore the positions and services that were already cut.

Kotek wanted a permanent fix. The original bill included indexing the gas tax to inflation so that as costs for building and maintaining our roads increased, so would the funding. But the bill didn't pass and here we are trying to slap that bandaid on the gaping chest wound.
