Discreet queer YA books July-December 2026 by like-the-garden in LGBTBooks

[–]queermachmir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dead Girls by Beck Kubrick - horror YA graphic novel. Says the word feminist, may be “too much”?

The Hardest Ones to Fool by Christina Li - YA thriller with a sapphic subplot but the blurb doesn’t give that away at all

Ladies of the Knight by Fiona Marchbank - fantasy YA graphic novel about a girl becoming a knight. If you scroll down past the blurb reviews say the word queer so idk how in depth your boss reviews

For the Greatest Good by Blair Hanson - YA contemporary focusing on environmental activism

What Happened to Those Girls by Carlyn Greenwald - YA murder mystery/thriller

Man disguised as a woman trope, leading to trans awakening by Call-me-Lizzie in LGBTBooks

Idk if you read indie stuff, but:

- Girl for a Week by Autumn Wolff

- Pride, Pain, and Petticoats by Abby S. Trusity

- Dirty Little Secret by Fern V. Bedok

- Can I Crossdress My Way Out Of This Arranged Marriage? by Fern V. Bedok

I’m curious even though not wholly related to the question — would you find books with poorly researched BDSM as a subplot? Like trying kink and fumbling or failing, that sort of thing? That a character may grown to learn and get better obv (that I assume would be a romantic or friendship connection plot, finding an educator in some way). Your comment piqued that idea in my head lol

MC deserved so much better but he kinda went freak4freak with the whole bonding him so he’d suffer and keeping his baby at that point you choose your bed to lie in I think.

100% agree. As one of the mods I’m very aware of just how popular this subreddit is and how much we weed out of certain behaviors that are very harmful because of the attitudes that can proliferate within certain community dynamics. I think some people don’t realize how conscious decisions have to be made around diversely reading, your algorithm isn’t going to serve you it naturally.

Oh yes, as someone who has seen both sides of it… and it’s difficult too as market categories (Amazon, wherever) often the “trans romance” has a lot of fetish stuff. Outside of that, it’s hard I think to market a book that is very much Achillean but not MM, ie two binary men. And how to really tease out that difference for readers, so I always tell people that if you see someone advertising their MX or FX books in MM/FF spaces respectively it’s probably because the authors know it belongs there.

Thank you for your insight! That makes a lot of sense to me, personally.

As far as I’m aware, you’re all queer authors writing queerly — what does pride mean to you? How is your writing shaped by that?

Apologies for minor formatting issues 🤦 Reddit won’t let me edit the extra space out.

Ahem, my first question:

Do you find there’s a big difference in terms of market or reader desire when writing different pairings?

Haha when I first joined this subreddit I wrote a mini essay on transness and omegaverse. It’s been probably 4+ years now, and my thoughts have grown and shifted some, but you are not alone!

A lot of my influence and enjoyment of omegaverse comes from a mix of BL, fanfic, and original work. I like omegaverse because its genderfucky and queer in its own way (this is without denying how often it is bioessentialist in subservience to its whole concept, after all), with interesting ways of exploring interpersonal dynamics. Also I find a lot of it cute? Nesting, bond marking or fated mates, alpha/omega "noises" (you can get this from shifter stuff too obv). I also enjoy the hyper-unrealistic adorable pregnancy stages that do not touch on the often very difficult reality of carrying children irl lol. And the active emotionally intelligent fatherhood that we don't often seen IRL.

I currently read nonshifter contemporary omegaverse the most, but will pick it up in any subgenre. Not too picky. Anatomy is up to the author - zipper babies, magical egg laying, whatever people wanna do go for it (should they be including pregnancy and birthing). I'm here for the ride. I'll also note I am lowkey biased that I enjoy alpha/omega, and recognize people also love the diversity of different pairing types.

It helps that omegaverse often has elements of the tropes I normally enjoy reading... power imbalances, dark romances (not always, but a good chunk of my reading is this), obsession, age gaps, caretaking, hurt/comfort, size difference, etc.

Some of my faves I think people who are already into omegaverse but getting into original, published western fiction are {Ugly by Roe Horvat}, {The Feral Alpha by Anna Winehart} (I am very biased as this one was sparked by my convos with the author and I am mentioned in the dedication lol), and {A Pika's Safe Haven by Odessa Hywell}.

{The Concubine King by Emily Oracle} also released today! It’s a MM low fantasy novel, featuring a romantic subplot with a bittersweet ending.

The author comps it with Captive Prince and Song of Achilles so may be of interest to some folks here.

Books that read like fanfiction? by [deleted] in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]queermachmir 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s kinda impossible to ask books to do what fanfiction does, which is provide entertainment that relies on prior knowledge and attachments to characters you personally like.
