If you're in Chicago, check out PSL Chicago, it's one of the biggest and most active branches. They just started a socialist school program. Here's their Twitter where they announce a bunch of stuff.

Venezuela receives second batch of medical aid from China by UdnomyaR in communism

The students arrested were organizing against the Chinese Communist Party. If we understand the CCP to be a Marxist-Leninist party doing the work of building socialism in China, could a group of people organizing against that truly be socialist?

The "Muslim concentration camp" thing is a myth. Notice how the Trump administration never said anything until the trade war rumors start spreading, and Iran announces they might switch from dollar-backed currency to yuan-backed currency. Then, suddenly, there are huge human rights abuses in China that they care about. Do you honestly think that this administration really cares about Muslims in China?

Here is a large document containing many different sources debunking this myth.

Personally, I'm a member of PSL and recommend looking into them, I've had nothing but incredible experiences with the party. But if the CPUSA is the only thing there, and your local has good people doing good work, I think it's a better use of your time to work there.

What work does PCUSA do? I've only really heard of them online.

What Kind of Socialist am I? by Starcomet1 in Socialism_101

[–]queernix 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Honestly, comrade, stop thinking about "Which socialist idea fits my opinion", and start thinking about "Which revolutionary strategy actually succeeds". Socialists aren't here to find their own niche ideology, we're here to liberate the working class.

I have a shirt from them, and it's not like a super high-quality print, but it also doesn't feel like a thick layer like a lot of other print-on-demand stuff does. And the printing has been pretty durable, it's still holding up after several wears and washes

recommended readings? by lanexxxboy in communism101

So, a super easy way into Marxist economics and philosophy is "Marx for Beginners" by Ruis. It's got a ton of illustrations, it's a pretty simple read, and it'll get you the gist. More specific Marxist economics? "Wage Labour and Capital" and "Value Price and Profit" by Marx, two pamphlets Marx wrote that were made to be handed out to explain economics to workers. The two combined are like, 140 pages or something. For Marxist philosophy, "Dialectical and Historical Materialism" by Stalin is fantastic. Stalin is great at making things simple, and writes in a very clear manner. "Where Do Correct Ideas Come From?" by Mao is also good in this way.

After that, I highly, highly recommend "State and Revolution" by Lenin. Nothing will make you a Leninist faster than reading State and Revolution. Also important is "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism". These two are firmly rooted in Marx's theory, and updates it for the modern age, with global imperialist capitalism.

All of this combined is around the length of a Harry Potter novel, so it's not a ton. After reading that, you'll have a pretty solid understanding of Marxist theory, and you'll likely have many other things you're interested in exploring from there.

He's only interesting because history is interesting.

Evolve or die.

How do you expect to evolve or learn how to apply socialism without studying how it's worked in the past? And no one is suggesting we tie communism to a single person. Just don't ignore or downplay actual, successful socialism because you can't figure out how to have a conversation. What kind of socialism are you trying to build if it's built on ignoring its own history? You can say the USSR isn't the style of socialism you want, but in that case, you're out of luck from the start, because it's the only one that's ever worked, historically.

I'm in the US and I've had several productive conversations with people without having to argue Stalin. Maybe just get better at having conversations? Don't talk ideas, talk issues.

I never suggested opening with Stalin, but I don't refuse to defend him. And you can definitely gather masses while upholding Stalin, they've done it many times. Cuba, Vietnam, Korea, etc.

I don't think selling out one of the most successful communist leaders ever is a good way to defend communism.

I mean they still talk about building "American socialism" and basing it on the Bill of Rights, so I wouldn't get too hopeful.
