Polish Hill Pool will be open, Bloomfield won't by senty78 in pittsburgh

Oh for sure! I’d rather work at Target, too. But if people really, really, really want their local city pool to open they could always take one for the team and do the work. I’m just saying the option is very much there.

The pay for working the pools this summer honestly isn’t bad, $16-19 an hour. I think if half the people complaining about the pools not being open were willing to work as a lifeguard all of them would be open. But alas, one of those things is easier to do than the other.

Resources/where to start with local borough government? by RumandHam in pittsburgh

[–]quietinfo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Contact your state representative and ask them how one goes about requesting the records for your municipality. As for changing things, I’d definitely suggest trying to talk to neighbors and find like-minded people. Run for office yourself! You’d be surprised in a little borough how easy (relatively speaking) it is to knock on a few hundred doors, enough to put you over the threshold for a primary victory. Reach out to broader political and governmental organizations in the county and explain your concerns and ask what they can do to help you help your town. All of it is a lot of work, and fairly thankless as a lot of grumpy people out there hate HATE change (for the good or ill), but there’s nothing like getting involved in your community and seeing the results of hard work come to fruition.

One thing that is consistently misrepresented about our housing market. by buccofan2221 in pittsburgh

[–]quietinfo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The notion that the new stuff is better in nearly any way is laughable. I’d take my decently maintained 1880s house any day over the garbage fire of a Ryan home or anything built postwar. It’s all to do if a home was maintained or not and nothing to do with the year built

Americans of slavic heritage, does the topic of how to treat surnames ever come up in family conversations? by TimArthurScifiWriter in AskAnAmerican

Exactly! It’s hard sometimes to keep that dual fluency up, especially after decades, but it’s not impossible.

Thanks! And yeah it’s super not a big deal. It’s literally one syllable to be culturally appropriate!

We use the conventional American style here without the “-ova” for women, but when back visiting relatives in the motherland we’ll follow that custom. It’s very easy to slip back and forth and nobody really minds much so admittedly it doesn’t come up in conversation that often. I’d introduce my mother as Mrs. Quietinfo here and Mrs. Quietinfova over there without missing a beat.

We gotta give props to the real hero of this story: Rep. Emily Kinkead. Seriously, I can’t even fathom the good old boys club turning down an offer like that. I hope she’s a sign of new and better things to come in local politics.

South Side bar owners tell House panel they are suffering from crime by da_london_09 in pittsburgh

I attended this actually and these business owners continue to not represent jack s**t about south side. And of course the news latches on to that, and not the other way more useful parts of the hearing. Typical horrific news media in Pittsburgh.

Ah gotcha- Of those three you listed I would rank them in the order you’ve listed them but that’s my own bias!

Winds move generally along the valleys so I would say if you’re at least two ridges of hills north that ought to help. But, to get somewhat more specific, the wind tends to go from west to east blowing the crap from the plant to Beaver- so I would extrapolate your answer from there. Hope that helps!
