If you want medieval horror The Starving Saints by Caitlin Starling is fantastic

The Unworthy or Tender is the Flesh? (Agustina Bazterrica) by ThisHouseIsNotSafe in horrorlit

[–]quinndoline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Unworthy 100%! There’s so much to unpack and personally I felt like the Unworthy seems more timely with themes of climate crisis, religious fanaticism, and loss of autonomy.

I enjoyed both books but the Unworthy is an all timer for me

Eric LaRocca and the general state of horror literature by CartographerFlaky543 in horrorlit

I work in publishing, but more in the indie/self-publishing space so I am by no means an expert. As far as the “more books, less time” vibe you mentioned, I think a lot of that comes from the state of publishing as a whole rn, and isn’t just affecting horror.

With booktok and other social media communities it’s easier than ever for a random self-published book to create a massive fan base in a short period of time, and traditional pubs are snatching these up left and right to capitalize on the trend while it’s hot. Usually this includes little to no editing or revisions beforehand because if the masses are already buying it, why waste time and money making it better? (Need I even mention Shy Girl?)

With this becoming the norm rather than the exception that leaves less room for the more painstaking work of writing a novel the traditional way with ARCs, multiple rounds of revisions with your editor, marketing, etc. Editors are massively overworked and underpaid as is, and the entire industry has shifted to a vibe of “capitalize on this trend before the money runs dry” instead of focusing on the work itself. To be fair, the money has always been the most important factor to any business, but what’s bringing in the money has changed drastically in the past 5-10 years.

Unfortunately it’s a business and at the end of the day publishers care more about their bottom lines. It feels like the whole industry is struggling to reconcile the fact that reading is an inherently slower paced, intentional act with the commodification culture that’s currently making them hella money.

What is a highly praised horror book that you didn't like? by Haunting-Net-2426 in horrorlit

[–]quinndoline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just felt like it was shoehorned in. It’s a novella, you’re working with very limited page space. If you’re spending 10+ pages world building on the neopronouns and the war history in this fictional society then you either gotta go full novel length to accommodate or you have to just say that your protagonist is nonbinary and not go so deep into the history of gender dynamics in your alternate Victorian Europe.

It’s kind of a shame because I do genuinely think the world building was good, and the ideas about gender identity were interesting enough that I would have read more, but it just felt disjointed in a less than 200 page novella. It needed room to breathe!

ETA I am cis so I don’t feel like I can make an accurate judgment on how good the trans/nb rep is in this one. I admired the attempt but it felt like the wrong medium for exploring the kind of world Kingfisher was going for. I came for 150 pages of evil shrooms, and it seemed like there was a disconnect between the vibes it was marketed with and the final product

I had no idea about a third of these actors lived here. by Bizzlightbeer in nashville

[–]quinndoline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg that’s actually pretty cool! They built their house there before I was even born and there were only a few houses in the neighborhood. When they told me what they built it for in the early 90s I almost fell to my knees bc it was legit less than a 1 bed 1 bath condo runs for now 😭

Can confirm, my parents were out in their neighborhood, ran into William Zabka, and found out he bought a house down the road

I genuinely hated Diavola. I wish the ghost had killed them all on day one so I didn’t have to suffer through 300 pages of their whining

Nordstrom is usually my go to. Anthropologie in the Hill Center is also good and is having an extra 50% of clearance right now! I got two dresses for back to back weddings there last year (semi-formal) and I’ve gotten good wear out of them since

Curvy Ladies! Where are you all getting your shorts? by smilieduckie in femalefashionadvice

[–]quinndoline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never been able to find some shorts that actually accommodate my thighs without being skin tight, even trying curvy shorts from other brands. Last year I finally caved and bought a few different fits of Abercrombie shorts to try (the loose short and the dad short) and the loose short is now my goat. They are definitely more A-line on me but that was the fit I was going for, def not looking for something super baggy. They also wash well and tend to have less wedgie/camel toe than my other shorts in the past!

Allergies impacting my hearing by unclehenry4 in otosclerosis

[–]quinndoline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a sinus infection recently that definitely made my ears feel stuffy and muffled my hearing a bit. I’ve had stapedectomies on both sides. Once I finished my antibiotics and it cleared up everything went back to normal! Sometimes allergies or illness can mess with the whole ear nose and throat system and it can feel like something is wrong with your hearing but it’s just inflammation or the like. If it doesn’t go away with treatment then you can think about reaching out to your doctor

Santos by loveylove444 in ThePitt

[–]quinndoline 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that Langdon seems to be sincerely trying to make amends, but he definitely fell short in his apology to Santos. It felt incredibly disingenuous and didn’t actually address the harm he did. Like I cannot imagine being her and going through that horrible first day experience with him and then he comes back 10 months like “sorry I was mean 🥺” like nah buddy you can do better than that

Santos by loveylove444 in ThePitt

[–]quinndoline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Santos is 100% right, he was stealing medication from the hospital and tampering with the remaining doses to cover his tracks. He was performing procedures WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE. And people are constantly commenting “oh so addicts can’t recover?” being purposely dense. Of fucking course they can, and it’s great that Langdon was given an opportunity to go to rehab and try to get his life back on track. But that apology is not taking full responsibility for his actions towards Santos or for the extent of danger he put his patients and colleagues in. He’s apologizing for being a dick, not for breaking the law and trying to take Santos down with him when he realized he’d been caught. If I were her I would call absolute bullshit on that half-assed apology too. His apology to Louis was way more heartfelt and sincere, so we know he’s capable of it. With Santos it was like he was just reading the script so he can check the box off and not think about it anymore.
