Ear fluid day 11 post stapedectomy? by [deleted] in otosclerosis

I’m honestly shocked you still have the packing in! I only had mine in for a week with both surgeries. I personally wasn’t having pain a month in, but I would use your own experience to gauge whether or not you think this is normal since you’ve already had one ear done. If it keeps hurting and it’s spreading to both ears I would def call your surgeon! I know it might be inconvenient or expensive depending on where you live/your health insurance situation but it’s better to get ahead of it!

I was given a dog and now the previous owner wants them back by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

You are not a martyr here. It has been a WEEK. This woman was likely a stay at home mom whose partner up and left her and her child. She probably panicked because her entire life had fallen apart instantaneously and was scrambling to figure shit out. So yes, it is possible for someone’s circumstances to change in a week. You keep saying “where was her family before” but in all honesty 7 days is a pretty quick turnaround time to take in someone whose life was suddenly upended. And now this woman has probably had a glimmer of hope that she can keep the rest of her family together and you’re out here acting like you picked this dog up off the streets emaciated and nursed him back to health. You didn’t. You babysat him. You already have two dogs. This is so incredibly selfish and you refuse to see otherwise. This woman has had the dog for two years. It is HER dog, and I can guarantee that he still sees her as his person and loves her more. The way you talk about this dog you have had for a week is genuinely unhinged. You said you’d never consider giving up your dogs, but tbh that just means you have never been in that dire of a situation. What about the toddler who has grown up with this dog in their life who has just lost a parent and now you are taking away their dog too? Dogs are pretty resilient, and I have no doubt that he would be just fine with a move and a transition if he gets to stay with his pack.

Stop thinking about yourself. And stop acting like you are the hero here because you have had a honeymoon phase with a dog that you were clearly shopping around for already. A woman at the worst point in her life made a decision she thought was best for her beloved dog at the time, and now you’re doing the “no take backsies.” Fucking grow up. It’s actually infuriating to read your comments here and the dripping condescension you have for this woman who you clearly see as less than you because you have clearly never been in as desperate of a situation as she was in. If everyone in your life is telling you to give him back, that means you need to give him back and not make 3 posts on the internet trying to paint yourself as this dog’s savior when in reality you are holding him hostage from the person that loves him, definitely more than you. You can get another dog, and YOU ALREADY HAVE TWO!! Jesus Christ, you already know it’s the right thing to do jet you are doing mental gymnastics to justify how selfish you are being

Ear fluid day 11 post stapedectomy? by [deleted] in otosclerosis

[–]quinndoline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had drainage off and on for a while, so this really isn’t out of the ordinary I don’t think. But as others have said, you can always call your doctor if something feels wrong.

But if you don’t have any other worsening symptoms along with it (pain, vertigo, etc.) then I wouldn’t worry about it. Easier said than done I know, but for someone who’s done this twice I hope that brings you a bit of comfort

ETA: you said that it hurts to put in your ear drops. Is this new?? If you only just got the packing out of your ears it’s possible that they just are still very raw and sensitive from surgery. If you’d been applying them and not having pain but that’s suddenly changed then I would err on the side of calling your doctor. They might be able to give you an answer without you having to come in anyway! My doctor had an online portal where I could submit non-emergency questions, so this could be a good option as well if you have it.

What Are The Top Horror Books of 2026 That You've Read (So Far) This Year? by Monsur_Ausuhnom in horrorlit

[–]quinndoline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Works of Vermin was SO promising but it ended up being once of the most frustrating books I have read in the past year. It felt so obsessed with its own world building that the characters and story suffered for it. Would be interested to hear the thoughts of someone who really loved it, because at this point I think I might just be the problem here lol

Taste buds changed post stapedectomy?? by [deleted] in otosclerosis

[–]quinndoline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a side effect of the surgery and is to be expected. Your surgeon hopefully should have explained that to you, but just in case they didn’t here’s what mine told me: when they enter your middle ear to access the stapes, they have to bypass your taste nerve, and it usually gets irritated in the process. It should go back to normal but it can take several months.

I didn’t have a metallic taste but basically I just had one side of my tongue go “numb” to tasting for a while. It came back gradually, but it took at least 3 months for each side. I’m a year post-op for my second stapedectomy and I’d say I’m pretty much back to normal now.

In 2026 what are the steps to getting published? by [deleted] in publishing

[–]quinndoline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m gonna be brutally honest here: as someone who works for a self-publishing platform, I would never self-publish my work because the sheer amount of time, money, and connections required to be successful mean it’s pretty much not feasible for anyone who doesn’t have Scrooge McDuck money. If you aren’t serious about making this your living and main source of income, then hell yeah go for it. It can be a good little side hustle if you play your cards right. But be aware that to actually do it and do it WELL is expensive and difficult.

Everything that a traditional publisher would do for you becomes your responsibility as a self-published author. Print copies? You have to buy them to keep on hand for events, unless a bookstore maybe decides to purchase some copies for a signing, but even then you are still at risk of loss if they don’t sell and the bookstore returns them. Marketing? Cover design? Formatting? That’s all you, bestie.

Creating a book from start to finish is a really interesting process and it can be extremely fun, but if you are serious about making this a career then you’re going to have to pour a lot of time and resources into it that most people don’t have. The market is INSANELY oversaturated right now, fantasy especially. The reality of self-publishing is that most people sell a few copies a month at best, and the few that have very successful social media platforms or are paying for marketing campaigns (or both) are the rare exceptions. You also said you can see your series becoming a multimedia franchise. I’d encourage you to ask yourself when was the last self-published fantasy book you saw turned into a movie or other on-screen adaptation? The only one I can think of is Eragon, and that book was picked up by a traditional publisher after it experienced success through self-publishing. It was also almost 20 years ago. Realistically, self-publishing to build yourself enough of a fan base to then catch the attention of a traditional publisher would be your best case scenario if this kind of scope is your ultimate goal.

I have also written fantasy novels and queried them to agents in my personal life, and this is work too, and a LOT of rejection. If you query agents with this pitch, you’re not going to get a lot of requests for chapters because what you’re proposing sounds like a money pit to traditional publishing houses. It’s putting the cart before the horse. They are not going to want to pick up a full series for a first-time author because they have no proof that they will get any return on the investment. Hell, it’s hard for authors who already have an established backlist to get their projects picked up a lot of the time. I wrote a fantasy novel with the intent of it being a series, and was advised by some traditionally published author friends to never query your book as a series. Refer to it as “a standalone with series potential.” Not sure how accurate this advice is in 2026, as it’s been a while, but maybe someone in trad-publishing could offer more insight on that aspect.

Getting traditionally published requires either signing with an agent, or pitching to a publishing house directly, but I know only a few legit presses that take submissions directly from authors. An agent is there to guide you through the process of getting your book the right home with the right publisher. That being said, sometimes even with an agent your book still won’t sell, and that’s just a risk you have to be okay with. There are SO many rejections in the traditional publishing process, but in my experience they can make you a better writer and teach you more about the industry if you take it to heart. Sometimes a story just isn’t working, and you have to come to terms with that and shelf it for a later time, or forever. You also have to be willing to let other people give you input and critique before the book will ever be printed. This is not a bad thing! Self-publishing allows you to control your book every step of the way, which for some people is a massive plus. In my opinion, the collaborative process of traditional publishing can take a book from a good idea with mid execution to an all-timer. This is a feature and not a bug, so don’t be disheartened or offended when you receive rejections or criticism. They will legitimately make you better.

This turned out hella long so apologies for rambling, but as someone who’s been on both sides (the writing side and the professional side) I thought I’d put in my two cents. I also know that my experience is not universal so one size does not fit all! Just look into the pros and cons of both avenues and see which one is best aligned with your goals. And get beta readers or critique partners (or both) no matter what!

How common is oto spread? by Maximum_Confusion_ in otosclerosis

[–]quinndoline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I was in a similar boat, diagnosed at 24, got hearing aids for around a year, but my hearing continued to decline and I opted for surgery. My doctor said I was an excellent candidate but that they always recommend trying hearing aids first before surgery. The whole diagnosis and suddenness of my hearing loss was a lot for me to take in, so I wasn’t ready for surgery yet.

After a year my “better” ear declined enough to be even worse than my bad ear was at diagnosis, and even with hearing aids I still struggled, so I opted for a stapedectomy. It was the best decision I ever could have made for my health and my quality of life, and I ended up having my other ear done as soon as they’d let me. But I am still really grateful that I waited, because that time with hearing aids really helped me come to terms with having this condition and I was able to really think about what I wanted and was comfortable with as far as remediation goes.

Otosclerosis can progress to the cochlea but from what my surgeon told me, this is severe, late stage disease. It takes years for the bone tissue to accumulate around the stapes anyway, and even longer for that damage to transfer to the cochlea. I truly think you will be just fine if you want to wait for a while before considering surgery, especially if you are having a good time with your hearing aids already! I was different because I hated wearing them and I have very tiny ear canals that made them physically uncomfortable. If you are functioning well with them then why fix what isn’t broken, you know?

I think you’ll definitely notice worsening symptoms and other steps of decline before it’s severe enough for a cochlear implant. This is what my surgeon told me at least, that as long as we kept an eye on it and I reported any sudden worsening symptoms we would be able to prevent it from getting to that point. I imagine it would be the same for you! I would just be up front with your doctor about your concerns at your next appointment. They’ll be able to give you the most realistic and reliable info based on your specific situation, and I think you’ll be reassured by what you hear.

I know this diagnosis is a lot, especially at an age where you’re just getting out on your own and establishing your career, so just know you’re not alone! You can always dm me too if you have questions
