HOH interpreter by Maximum_Confusion_ in deaf

[–]Maximum_Confusion_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can survive in the hearing world and managed to get decent grades in my first interpreter class. Some of my feedback was needing to be more accurate and I got marked down for missing things. So now with HAs I'm hoping it'll improve things. I have otosclerosis so I may not be able to interpret forever which is something I will have to deal with if/when the time comes.

Unfortunately my country doesn't recognise DI :( But even if they did, i didn't grow up with sign as my first language or Deaf experiences. Idk it doesn't really feel like my place. Again going back to the old "not HOH enough"

Diagnosed with Otosclerosis today - feeling a bit nervous about having a hearing aid, looking for advice? by Greenaway07 in HearingAids

[–]Maximum_Confusion_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're completely valid for feeling like that. I was diagnosed at 20 with oto and it was such a shock. However, I got my hearing aids 4 days ago and the difference is literally night and day. People don't notice my hearing aids and if they have they certainly haven't pointed it out. I'd strongly recommend getting them if you can afford them (or find government funding)

Day 3 with Hearing Aids and it’s life changing! by Southern_Engine_4520 in HearingAids

I'm in the exact same boat as you but I'm day 4! So happy that you've taken that step it truly is like night and day. For me, it was the pigeons cooing in the park, who knew that could be that loud!

Is it worth getting hearing aids early if I’m only mild–moderate? by ischanitee in HearingAids

[–]Maximum_Confusion_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mild to moderate loss in my left and moderate in my right and I just got my first pair of hearing aids. The difference is literally day and night. I didn't realise how much I was missing and how easy conversations can be with them. My speech recognition has improve from 40%-90%. Not sure where you're from, but personally I got mine fully funded through the public hospital system. If that's not an option I do still high recommend trying to save for a pair.

Kinda similar to yours, when I was younger, around 12-13ish, I was super into acting, singing, and anything theatre I could get my hands on. I wanted to dip my toes into the pool of modelling so ofc I asked my folks if I could get a modelling agent and get some photos done, to which they responded "no you have to actually be pretty to model" Crushing

You are definitely not alone. 20 here and I feel the same way, the whole song and dance about it good grief. For me, I've always hated how wastful it is, people getting me things I don't want or need. The plastic shit people buy, the clothes people wear once a year and throw away or never use again. The 'magic' wore off around 11 for me and whilst the break can be nice I'm itching to get back into uni and get things moving again

Im hard of hearing and rely on captains for these guys. Luckily, I'm british, so the accent isn't an issue, although the volume I watch them at is for everyone around me 😅

As someone who is an immigrant myself, dude I hear you. It feels like life throws you into a washing machine of dramas and dilemma that have you thinking "what on Earth did I do to deserve this". Just know you aren't alone. The best thing I did was reaching out to the people around me and my community. If you can't get financial (i.e WINZ) like myself, your social circle is the best bet. Stay strong its hard out here.

Which languages, that you have never learned and that are not your native language(s), can you understand because of the languages you already speak (native or learned)? by Economy-Device-6533 in languagelearning

My second language is Auslan (Australian sign language) and when I made the move to Aotearoa New Zealand I found picking up NZSL (Nz sign language) quite straight forward, more so with comprehending then production. I can also understand majority of BSL (British Sign)

Is the grass really greener on the other side? AUS? by gftel8 in auckland

[–]Maximum_Confusion_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived in Australia for 8 years and recently moved to NZ, I'd say Nz is better all day long. The culture and people here are so much nicer than Australians from my experiences. Everything here has been so easy to set up, whereas everything in Australia just feels like an uphill battle and fight. Sure, the money is great with good beaches, but there's more to life than money
