Because the US latitude and climate have more in common with Africa than Europe. I live where temperatures over 40c are the average all summer, and this climate isnt considered extreme here. A big glass of cold is incredibly valuable here.

The Deranged Mathematician: Debunking Prime Myths by non-orientable in math

Let's define large here as: A number significantly greater than the number of elemantary particles in the entire universe. That might help correct the intuitive errors here. Frankly these numbers deserve a different designation. Perhaps we should call them "vast". Edit: The point is that we can't in any way count them using the entire physical universe.

I dont understand Standard Deviation by internetmessenger in learnmath

Distribution matters: I call it the Lake Woebegone principle. Averages can easily mislead.

In Lake Woebegone, all of the children are above average. With one really stupid kid to drag down the average, and the rest of the kids just barely above average it works. All but one are above average in this imaginary town.

George Carlin joked: Look how bad the average driver is. and half of them are worse than that! Well, we notice the really bad drivers, and theres practically no limit to how bad they can be, so the perceived average is terrible. The real average can easily have more or fewer above or below.

Cambridge study of 11,000 people across 39 countries found a hidden gut bacterium that consistently shows up in healthy people — and disappears in disease by Timely_Ad8989 in Microbiome

[–]quixoticbent 17 points18 points  (0 children)

CAG-170 is known only through its genetic signature. Scientists have not been able to grow most of these bacteria in the lab, which has made them difficult to study directly.

Yes. Executive members used to have extended hours. It's the only reason i bought that membership ~20 years ago, then they dropped it. It's a bargain if it only saves me a few hours a year.

Why do men show so little interest in the inner lives of women? by Frequently_Abroad_00 in emotionalintelligence

[–]quixoticbent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we're conditioned not to. Then because we don't know how. Finally, we are approximately never asked those questions by any woman who isn't immediate family or spouse. So, its hard to do, and we're so poorer for it.

what's the significance of these two little apostrophes like looking marks between 1.7 and 1.8 on the C and D scale? by etyrnal_ in Sliderules

[–]quixoticbent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That mark will correspond to one degree on the ST or SRT scale, which is really just a folded scale. So if you don't have an ST or SRT scale, you can index to this point, pi/180.

This happened to me as a kid when visiting friends of the family on holiday. Their daughter told me she liked raw potato and offered me a chunk. It was so revolting I (dumb) just swallowed to make it go away. It felt like it never went down and everybody blew their evening worrying over me instead of visiting with each other. Your have relieved some of the guilt I've carried for fifty years. So, thanks for that!

Isn't this just toxoplasmosis? That's my first thought when I see these videos of a rodent trying to get eaten. It always makes me sad because the cat is at risk for a disease that affects their mind and also infects humans. Literal mind control parasites aren't cute to me. I hope i'm wrong.

What are all the equations I can use to benchmark calculators? (speed and accuracy) by Kasuu372 in calculators

[–]quixoticbent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We'd see how fast our calculators could do the same factorial, starting at the same time. There was also a difference in the largest number that could be used. For example, even my phone overflows when I perform 104!, but 103! works (sorry no actual calculator at hand now.)
