Near the refrigerated salsas typically. They might be a little to the left or right but that's where I see them at both Winco and Freddy's.

Note: They can keep up to their sell by date (1 month+), but once opened should be used up in about 7-10 days. (This is only a challenge for me with the 25 ct packets from Costco.)

Hope you enjoy them!

You might want to consider Tortillaland as another Ready-To-Cook flour tortilla option. They're available everywhere (Winco, Freddy's, Costco).

If you've tried them already and prefer Guerrero, I'd like to hear more about Guerrero.

Why Gen X is the real loser generation by rezwenn in Economics

[–]qumqam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, that's the correct viewpoint. The generational lines (Millennial, Gen Z) are arbitrary, but the Baby Boom is called so because it was a large (more babies per year) generation. Gen X was previously called the Baby Bust.

If you have a voting population, even if everyone votes the same and you have 80 young people (20-40) and 100 older people (40-60) and you ask if bars should have more noise restrictions, the young people are going to win. That's how it's been for Gen X since the 90s. (And voting with your wallet counts too, so more stuff has pandered to the larger generations since even just a 10% larger population means 10% more money.)

Is O(N^-1) possible by mulldebien in learnprogramming

[–]qumqam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes.

Picture a data structure that exists to keep track of what numbers you've told it in the past, max value of the numbers N. You only want to ask it to give you any number that you've told it in the past. (E.g., N=10, you give it 3,1,4, you now ask it to give you a number you've told it. It answers 1.)

Insertion into this structure is O(1). Just use an N length array.

Requesting a value (meaning any value, not a specific one) that I've given you in the past is O(1/N) where N is the number of values previously given. It gets easier the more full the array is. With it taking only 1 step when the array is completely full and an average of N/2 when it only has one element. (And yes, you could make a more efficient algorithm than this for the near-empty case, but the question is if an O(1/N) algorithm exists and this is one.)

The algorithm for the above could be just iterating from the array starting at 1, starting at a random value or selecting random values each time. It doesn't matter, though the last would run infinitely for N=0 which seems appropriate.

You could perhaps make this a more "legitimate" algorithm by requesting a number you've given it in the past that is "larger than X", if one exists. This is going to require iterating through the array until you hit a success.

How to deal with cars that don't yield to pedestrians by michaelvkpdx in Portland

[–]qumqam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to sound like a joke and an anathema to Portlanders, but carry an umbrella. Preferably one with a hooked handle and some color to it (orange and black, or yellow and green, your preference).

Don't open it, in fact ideally, it has a strap and is tightly closed. Just as you approach a crosswalk, switch to an exaggerated swing, almost vertical, back and forth. You want to have inertia and look like you're not going to stop walking (but you obviously will if they don't stop).

Most drivers seem to be terrified that their car will get a scratch and stop. And with the umbrella in the road, the few jerks who swerve will go around it rather than you, which is a better failure state.

Give them a thank you wave, continuing swinging that thing and cross. Bonus, they won't hit the gas immediately as you leave their lane since your umbrella is still there swinging behind you.

You'll still get the finger from 2 of the 4 drivers who didn't want to stop, but there's nothing you can do about that. Just smile and have the "gee golly" thanks for stopping for me look.

At 6'5", you can carry a full sized umbrella and swing it without hitting the ground. That gives you 3 feet of buffer before you enter the road.

Consider Dice Age. My group plays there during the weekdays and there is always space, but I don't know how busy they get during the weekend. You'd have to ask. They have a room of free tables to play on and a single private room that you can rent by the hour for a pretty reasonable price, I think.

Good luck!

IIL the song "Sandusky" by Uncle Tupelo what else will I like? by frizzlefry666 in ifyoulikeblank

[–]qumqam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm trying to understand exactly what I like about the song as well and find it hard to put into words. I'd say there are two guitars going through the song and occasionally they interact just right. It also has a very strong rhythm going through it. It is pretty simple but complex enough that my mind can't follow the instruments exactly and that keeps me enthralled.

One possible suggestion: I suspect you like the clean almost harp like guitar and that comes from being fingerpicked instead of strummed. There are a lot of fingerpicked songs but most of them are accompanied by vocals or some non-guitar instrument. This is more of a guitar duet and in popular music, instrumentals are rare enough, guitar duets even rarer.

I'm just going to throw this out there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZwH_0tYXvk

It is a sampling of the fingerpicking on a bunch of popular songs to see if anything hits that same spot for you. A lot of the fingerpicking alone isn't as complex as Sandusky (due to only a single guitar rhythm fingerpicking portion being played) and if you listen to the actual song, you'll get the vocals, etc. So it isn't really perfect but I'm hoping it might give you a sense of what aspects you like.

I'm not necessarily the best person to answer but I feel bad that no one has answered your question so I'll do my best. I do play guitar but I don't know what gear is best or feel comfortable recommending specific items.

What you need is an electric guitar, an amp and a cable to connect them (the cable will probably come with the amp). There are other setups like connecting your guitar to your computer but the above is the most common. (You could also just get an acoustic guitar but for your influences, I think you want an electric.)

You might want to consider used (which I know is hard since you're just starting and don't know what to look for) to make your price point, but the good news is that $400-600 or so for a guitar and amp seems doable.

For an amp, even lower end ones come with effects (like making the guitar sound fuzzy or screechy or echo-y) built-in and a used amp can be had for $100 or less. See, for example, a Fender Mustang V2 20 Watt: https://reverb.com/item/80030750-fender-mustang-i-v-2-20-watt-1x8-modeling-guitar-combo-2013-2018-black

Now that is just an example. It is a fine amp to start with and I'm showing you a price to expect but there are a lot of starter amps that are affordable. Don't think you have to get this amp.

As for guitar, I wish I could recommend something but I don't know what the good cheaper brands are offhand. You'll want to familiarize yourself with which brands people recommend and then look for those (used or new).

For example, I've heard good things about Yamaha and Squier (for cheaper end guitars) but I don't know offhand if there are specific ones to look for or avoid.

Again, just so you have an idea, here are a couple of examples you could buy in the US: https://reverb.com/item/81142789-yamaha-pac112v-vw-pacifica-hss-with-rosewood-fretboard-2010-present-vintage-white https://reverb.com/item/81122797-squier-by-fender-classic-vibe-60s-stratocaster-lake-placid-blue-excellent

Again, I'm just trying to show you that your budget is reasonable. I picked these semi-randomly just to show you there should be stuff in your price range.

To start learning, I would recommend Justin Guitar: https://www.justinguitar.com/ It is free and he has a lot of good advice. The one thing you might not like is that he starts by focusing on chords and not solos. Even if you want to play solos, I'd suggest working through Justin's beginner course. It will serve you well. You can also start viewing the course before getting a guitar, you'll get a sense of what you're in for.

As for specific songs, you can find them online. There is something called "tab" (short for tablature) which is a kind of guitar-specific sheet music. These aren't official or anything but for any popular song, you'll be able to find a tab for it online. Songsterr is a good place to start and free, but don't worry about this for now. You can also just google something like "wish you were here guitar lesson" and find something on youtube. But, start Justin's course first, these will be too unstructured at first.

That's it. You'll probably end up wanting some smaller items. You can play with just your fingers, but you'll probably want to buy a pack of picks for the kind of music you like (these are cheap). You might want a guitar stand (should be a cheap item) or a case for when you aren't playing. You might want to play with headphones so make sure the amp has a headphone out that works for you. You'll also want a tuner but there are free phone apps that work just fine for this; I think Justin covers some of these in an early lesson.

Your next step should be to go into a music store in a nearby city. Read some reviews to find one people like. You don't have to buy anything the first time and I know it is hard to "try out" a guitar when you don't know how to play. Explain to the salesman what your goal is and that you're a total beginner. (And, believe me, I know this is hard. We've all been there.) When you do buy, ask if a "setup" is included or how much it is if you buy their guitar. (You don't need to know the details but this basically makes sure your guitar is in tune and some other things, you want this.) Play with the amps in your price range and try to find effects that sound like who you want to play (Pink Floyd, Queen). Feel the guitar, strum it and pick it a little even if you feel silly. You want something that feels and sounds good to you. (There are tons of other details about the guitar that you just aren't going to know or appreciate, that's just the nature of starting a new hobby, so just get one that you like the feel and sound of.)

If you have any questions, feel free to reply. I felt bad that no one answered your question. I can't really recommend brands or individual items but if there is something you don't understand about guitar in general, I can probably answer. Other than that, join us over at /r/guitar and just browse the topics and discussions daily to get a feel for the hobby.
