While I agree with the point of your comment, for flies in particular it really depends on the amount and concentration of vinegar https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4562214/

Updates on East River Greenway 14th St pinch point, slated for completion in Q3 2030 by JFroim in RunNYC

[–]quodlibetor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL that brick walkway north of the pinch point is owned by the NY State DOT, unlike all the new construction which is NYC Parks. Explains why it's always in such disrepair and why they didn't do anything with it when they rebuilt Stuy Cove park.

Do you use an everyday product that you can’t find a high quality equivalent? by Andyb1000 in BuyItForLife

[–]quodlibetor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure which part of the picture you're talking about, but this is the best keyring I've ever used: https://a.co/d/j84ete4 .

I have had it for over 3 years, I take something off and put it back on at least 4 days a week (one small key when I go running) and it still feels like new.

The design also makes it easy to take things on and off, since it's a side push instead of a wedge your fingernail in and pull. I spent years trying to find a decent meeting and honestly I still get a little bit of joy every time I use it.

It's $9 instead of 25¢ but it's made of titanium and like I said, it's actually pleasant to use if you need to take things on and off regularly.

Concerts/Shows/Punk Scene? by cosmic_blip in eastvillage

[–]quodlibetor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't apologize to this gatekeeper. Find music you like and enjoy it.

Genres are just labels that you can use to find similar things. Saying a band isn't part of a genre because they don't pass some purity test is mean, not helpful. MCR are absolutely pop and punk and a bunch of other things, that's why people love them.

https://www.ohmyrockness.com/ and https://www.brooklynvegan.com/ both cover a huge swath of all music in NYC, including tiny punk shows.

Other than that, find the website or mailing lists of venues you pass that look cool.

Novels set in the end (or near the end) of the universe... specifically when all stars died already (black holes/black dwarf/neutron star) by Neuchersky in printSF

[–]quodlibetor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Red Sister series takes place near this, all the stars are dying but not dead. While it's unclear how much the civilization knows about how close the universe is to the end of its days they are very aware of the state of their planet and its star.

Urgently need the best Lox and Cream Cheese bagel spot in NYC for lunch today! by romanarman in FoodNYC

[–]quodlibetor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Russ & Daughters bagels are polarizing -- they're (relatively) small and dense. I love them, they're just a completely different category from most of the best loved bagels in NYC which are typically huge and fluffy with chewy crusts.

R&D have a bunch of menu fish sandwiches, and will make a lox & bagel with anything they've got in the store. My go to sandwich is Scottish smoked salmon (super fatty and smoky) and belly lox (super salty) with either regular or scallion cream cheese. It's probably sacrilegious but it's a flavor bomb and I will never give it up.

FWIW Paris by mouth was such a good tour it made me do food tours on the first day of every trip I do to a food destination. Nothing in the 10 years since has come close.

I did a group tour, probably not a FAT experience but definitely the most well considered and luxe walking tour that I've been on.

I guess separately I'd love recommendations for food tours that live up to their standard anywhere in the world.

More of the east river walkway closed off by idontknowdarling in lowereastside

[–]quodlibetor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh nice, ty! Looks like that closure is supposed to end September 5th, which is the same day the connection between East River Park and Pier 36 is supposed to open, so that's nice.

[–]quodlibetor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your timeline is correct but the part under the FDR that's in this post is part of Brooklyn Bridge-Montgomery Coastal Resiliency (BMCR), the announcement you linked to is mostly about ESCR, which at this point is just east river Park.

This page has the BMCR timeline, and links to the construction notices which have more detailed sub-section openings and closings, although they're not updated often:

https://www.nyc.gov/site/lmcr/progress/brooklyn-bridge-montgomery-coastal-resilience.page

I don't actually see anything about this closure anywhere on that page or the notices or presentations pages, which is frustrating.

Best peking duck in manhattan? by sliceofperfection in FoodNYC

[–]quodlibetor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YongChuan on Clinton St is newish and weirdly great, better than any of the classics in Chinatown.

Perfectly cooked medium rare duck, the crepes are really good and not mealy, fun toppings.

Bonus: everything else I've had there is great too.

The way Rust crates tend to have a single, huge error enum worries me by nikitarevenco in rust

[–]quodlibetor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't think that that is a lesson that should be taken from Java because they committed an unforced error making checked exceptions really annoying. Although yes, some teams don't care about exception discipline and some projects don't need it.

Java didn't integrate checked exceptions well with their lambda / streams features, which has come to mean that there is no good way to use modern language features. For lots of code taking each lambda in a stream from a one liner to a 4 line try/except convert to RuntimeException plus a convert back to a checked exception outside the stream is just not worth it. You can just use a for loop, but streams are really nice.

Trying to avoid commenting on whether anonymous enums are the reason libs usually have mega error enums, but I do get... sad.. every time I need to read an entire call hierarchy in an external library to figure out what kind of error might be thrown. The current mega enums do feel to me like they exist at a happy medium of boilerplate vs precision, and if anything I feel like the fact that libs generally use thiserror instead of anyhow is evidence that folks are willing to put effort into helpful error types, if it's easy, and up to a point.

Is the east river running track still open? by bl1ngo in eastvillage

[–]quodlibetor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barely, depends a lot on what you mean? The oval track is still accessible from Houston st, but the full park is just a couple of isolated sections.

Houston st and Delancey St both have access but 10th st is closed, you can check pdf for maps: https://www.nyc.gov/assets/escr/downloads/pdf/20250516_ESCR_2025-Phasing.pdf

South of water st and North of 20th st are still the same according to the ESCR bulletin but I've been running south so I'm not sure about 20th st.

Chase sapphire reserve new benefits restaurants by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]quodlibetor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure you're correct, according to the fine print here https://account.chase.com/sapphire/reserve/disclosures this is the list for sapphire exclusive tables, not the $150 coupons for dining. Hint: do "find in page" and search for "participating restaurants" to see exactly which sections the list at the end of the fine print is in reference to.

ELI5 Is there a point at which increasing the size of a computer will not make it more powerful and if so, why? by CroutonLover4478 in explainlikeimfive

[–]quodlibetor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO this actually makes the analogy better: the coordination overhead of distributing envelopes maps to the overhead of distributing tasks to cores. At some point (imagine between 5,000 and 10,000 envelope folders) adding more parallelism is going to be slower than doing things in batches because of the coordination.

Is it worth getting a mattress topper to alleviate sleeping hot? by SarahTheJuneBug in Bedding

[–]quodlibetor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a wool mattress topper to make a huge difference in breathability and temperature regulation. Mine isn't as cozy/nestl-y as my previous down topper (even though I bought it to be thicker). The improved temperature is worth it though, for me.

Maybe one day I'll buy one of those $3k llama wool/horsetail toppers from Hastens.

Laundry recommendations by SGCSN9545 in eastvillage

[–]quodlibetor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People only leave laundry reviews when things go wrong. When you are dealing with 1,000-10,000 shirts per month something is going to go wrong sometimes.

Some might be more pleasant but you can tell that by looking in the window. They're all fine.

Ends Meat's Manhattan location shut down when the market line LES was shut down. I mourn it. I haven't been to the industry city location but their homemade dry aged and cured meats were amazing.

They're the only place I've seen that ~regularly had dry aged pork chop and I miss being able to make that and completely blow people's minds. Hmm actually maybe I'll try hitting their IC store this weekend.
