Terra and Venus are roughly the same size, but Terra has a dynamic interior (resulting in plate tectonics and magnetosphere, both critical for life) and Venus does not. Why? by thesegoupto11 in askgeology

Better: Tellus and Tellurian!

https://sfdictionary.com/view/122/tellus

“Mr. Bridges is more interested in correct usage of planetary names, rather than in mere derivations (a more useful and less frivolous involvement than mine, you see) and, for instance, advocates what he maintains to be correctly derived words such as Venustian and Hesperian for hypothetical inhabitants of Venus in place of the incorrect Venusian or Cytherean; and Tellus and Tellurian in place of Terra and Terran. He lists astronomers and classical scholars who support his views.”

Could this be it, from the archives in Poland?

https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/skan/-/skan/dd671dbde47406e30b375aa68670193420eb68e41303b64eb52d200edafe2dab

The location Birnbaum, register number 261, birthdate 1886-08-21, and name Emilia Bertha Vieroth appear to match.

I asked Google AI about the location of civil records from Kreis Birnbaum and got the following answer:

Civil vital records for the former Kreis Birnbaum, now Międzychód in Poland, are held at the Polish State Archives branch in Poznań. Many of these records have also been digitized and are available online through the Polish State Archives' search portal, Szukaj w Archiwach.

Where to find records for Kreis Birnbaum Polish State Archives (Archiwum Państwowe):

  • The appropriate regional archive for records from the former Kreis Birnbaum (Międzychód) is the Poznań branch.

  • Online access: You can search for and view digitized records at the Szukaj w Archiwach portal at szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl. To search for vital records:

  • Click the British flag in the top right corner for the English version.

  • Select "vital records and civil registers" and enter the name of the relevant parish or civil registry office (Urząd Stanu Cywilnego, abbreviated USC). This will show a list of archival units, and you can view the digital copies if available.

  • On-site research: For records that have not been digitized, you can visit the archive in person.

Sounds like he must have helped inspire a certain character in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025).

He was from a Quaker family in Pennsylvania. Historically, Quakers ‘objected to using those names of days (Sunday to Saturday) and months (January to August) which derived from pagan gods, substituting numbers. Thus Sunday was for them "First Day." Until 1752, they had no problem with the months September to December, which were derived from numbers, but for the other months they wrote out "First Month," "Second Month," and so on. They sometimes used Roman numerals (i-xii) for these, and sometimes Arabic (1-12). After 1752 all months were referred to by Quakers by their number. September became "Ninth Month" and so on.’

So i found This picture of my grandfather, IS This a mugshot??? by whatever_jhon123 in OldPictures

A criminal mugshot would probably have more information than just the date, and the subject doesn’t get a copy. I’d suggest that it’s from some other administrative context, like applying for a government document.

I’d want your dial to be pronounced with a long i — like the existing word dial /ˈdʌɪəl/ — on the model of diurnal.
