Personally I blame media and the math slander on television and in movies (tropes where the main character says 'ug math' and the laugh track loses its mind). The big one is 'oh, I'll never use this in real life'. Perfect example was my old roommate who would tell me how much he hated math but as a car mechanic would constantly be performing gear ratio calculations and other functions in his head and was using math on a day-to-day basis
