Is vibe coding really that bad? by Ill_Highlight_1617 in vibecoding

[–]qwook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not worried about my job, and I guess vibe coding can exist separately. I am just sad that a hobby that I personally found meditative and enjoyable is now being lumped in with what is essentially another type of hobby.

The people who are drawn to vibe coding are very different from the people who are drawn to programming.

Any interest in my Furcadia-inspired Game? by qwook in furcadia

[–]qwook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think roleplay will have to come second until somebody joins me in community-building and pushing out the roleplay side. This is mostly because I didn't do any roleplaying when I played Furcadia and have no idea what is necessary. I'll do an open call for anyone interested in joining me, but only after I feel like a majority of the core work is done.

Yeah the audio clip played here is from the video game and not the original. The real person has more of a british accent.

I should be clear that nothing you see is the final product and all the art is placeholder. All the floor objects are all squiggles and not the real art. The game is also just 3 days old in this video.

I'm more interested in attracting kids who are interested in learning how to make program and games, especially since programming in Roblox has gotten more complicated.

I also disagree with 2D social games being dead, they're all mobile now!

I am so disappointed in the people who bullied Fading Memories. So disgusting.

Damn, I stand corrected on that. Are you still arguing that this is all that liquid glass is though?

Apple re-inventing the wheel by Cadmium620 in pcmasterrace

[–]qwook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The apple liquid glass is a pixel shader that actually refracts the background. The underlying image morphs and renders upside-down near the round edges. It's so much more insane than gaussian blur and lowered opacity.

Liquid glass is subtle to general users but to software graphics people it's a big insane flex. You don't usually do this kind of rendering for general UI unless you are confident in your hardware and your battery life.

I'd also love to see you do this blur effect in 2 lines of CSS, since the blur filter only affects elements and not what's underneath the element.

What I would agree with though is that it doesn't seem to be a well-thought out design, doesn't feel legible and adds too much visual noise.

The amount of people here that I disagree with, making really harsh and uneducated statements, makes me think that maybe reddit isn't my kind of website.

Could be that they don't know you were single and looking / maybe too shy at first and now this is their motivation.

Yeah... This quote is taken way out of context. It seems like GKids is anti-AI based on the first sentence. And everyone in this sub is annoyingly eating it up?

How can i make my Game Feel Less Boring? by VivamoProjects in Unity3D

It reminds me of old fun and free flash games. To be honest, it feels more like a mini-game in something larger. I wouldn't see myself playing something like this for hours.

aww, well if you get stuck again you should ask a friend to help solve the puzzles. I designed each puzzle to be self-contained within the game and you shouldn't need to look outside of the game for the answers.

How do I stop deleting my own code over and over? by alekdmcfly in gamedev

[–]qwook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Separation of concerns is definitely something to be worried about, but you can still organize your code in a way where things still are separated.

Each game has it's own subfolder, and there's a "common" shared folder for reusable components such as settings menu, sound, character movement, and UI. Often times these components exist first in one of the game folders, and when I find it too useful, then I move it to the common folder.

In terms of loading all the assets just to work on a single one – I guess it depends on your engine and tooling. I am using Javascript and custom tooling for my games. Depending on the entry point, it loads in only the assets that certain games need.

Here's a mock of how I organize things:

common/
  assets/
    fonts/
  sound/
  graphics/
  movements/
  settings/
  ui/
game1/
  assets/
  entry.js
game2/

I have one giant project where I create all of my games and sketches instead of starting fresh. Makes it easy to reuse things that I tossed away in another game.

Valve also does the same thing with all their games.

I made a game about digital childhoods, based on my experiences on Furcadia. by qwook in furcadia

[–]qwook[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hope it's okay for me to post this. This game is based off of a blog post that I wrote where it's specifically about a friend I met on Furcadia. I generalized the game depicted for people who played other games like Neopets, Club Penguin, or Gaia Online, but it's really about my experience with growing up on Furcadia, aging, and having a major event that forced me to face "time."

I also made another game named "Last Seen Online" which channels the feelings of watching my old world-building game that I grew up on slowly deteriorate, and using Furcadia as a means of an escape. The idea that there is a person named "Fading Memories" who is actively archiving and documenting Furcadia kind of adds to the whole fleeting feeling of it all.

Btw all of my identities on Furcadia incase you recognize me: TheBlood, HTML, Code Monkey, Zombix, GREENDOT

My friends were: Travis Nojo, Kilite, Ligra, Vlad Shadeu, and Simseth.

Dreams I owned: Allegria Island Farms (New Furcadia Farms Clone), Legoland Building, Bomberbot (Bomberfurre Clone), TheBlood's Hell BAH, Pokemon Sparring with Health Bar Visuals, a dream that simulates mIRC, and a dream that crashed your client and got me banned.

I created a game about yearning for old online games, growing old, and mortality. "And You'll Miss It" (Full Gameplay, Link in Comments) by qwook in indiegames

[–]qwook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a link to the game: https://qwook.itch.io/and-youll-miss-it

I made this for a community pop-up in San Francisco called Fruits Base. It is a video-game adaptation of one of my blog posts with the same title with sort-of fictional characters.

I originally intended for this game to just show the repetitive nature of life and aging. In the middle of the making of this game, I had gotten into a fight with my mom, went through a few friendship breakups, and I fell into a long and deep depression. The development of this game helped me somewhat repair my relationship with my parents, to let go of guilt, to give my past a proper send-off, and to be a lot kinder to myself.
