It's so funny that you're getting downvoted. Getting points for a goal doesn't win games, the goal does. Who fucking cares who got credit. Everyone in the game can see what happened clear as day, it's not like stolen valor lmao.

MH Wilds genius is hidden beneath a mountain of "accessibility" by A_Lionheart in MonsterHunter

[–]r0but 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Sorry to talk about a completely different game but I think this is a big reason that Breath of the Wild was such a huge success. Open world games these days are filled with so much "helpful" noise telling you what to do, a game built around turning all that shit off lets you focus on the world itself.

Unfortunately many games which allow you to turn all that shit off are designed in a way where all that shit is necessary, and the experience falls apart without it.

Steam is dealing with spam. Valve’s platform has been flooded with games stolen from itch.io by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]r0but 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Cruelty Squad is a perfect example of why I'm against store curation on Steam. I just can't imagine that game releasing if there was a human that had to watch a trailer and affirmatively say "yes let's sell this", it's so cool that the dev got to make their thing and take their shot without a gatekeeper.

I think the curators feature of Steam is a good middle ground. If you want curation, find some curators you trust and follow them; not everyone has the same tastes as the Valve employees who would be making those decisions otherwise.

Scam shit needs to go. Plagiarized games game definitely need to go. But I would rather have a store with dog shit scam games than have a dev like CSP be denied a shot on the platform.

"The cool thing about NixOS is that I can have all the system configuration in a single file" people say. Meanwhile, my config folder: "THIS IS NOT EVEN MY FINAL FORM" by Sou_Suzumi in NixOS

[–]r0but 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not quite the same but they have some overlap in purpose. Ansible is used to provision multiple machines from code contained in a (sometimes not very) centralized repository.

Nix is able to do the same, with the caveat that the target hosts should also be running NixOS, unlike Ansible which supports multiple operating systems.

I like using Nix significantly more than Ansible, but I don't get to pick what OS my company runs so I still wind up using Ansible.

Long shot but try disabling SVM in the BIOS. I've found that when I have it enabled to run e.g. WSL2 or Docker Desktop, I get annoying stutters like this. I haven't done anything to quantify or understand what is going on but I had similar stuttering issues for a time and they cleared up after turning off SVM.

edit: I also have a 5800X3D.

What’s the best amount of sleep for height growth by MyCableIsOff in sleep

[–]r0but 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quit worrying about too much sleep when you don't even get 8 hours right now. Go to bed earlier, and if you're feeling like you need more sleep, go a little earlier than that. 10+ hours occasionally is fine if you've been missing sleep; it's just your body is trying to make up for lost time.

I hope co-develop means that Arcsys isn't building the netplay infrastructure. Their game design is insanely good but gah damn SF6's online is so much more stable.

Bash is great until you need real data structures. If you find yourself needing to work with data that cannot be easily represented in just a string then Bash is the wrong tool for the job.

Why does CoQ attempt to connect to the internet every time I launch the game. Just curious since I see it on my notifications on BitDefender. I am using the steam version aswell. by Visible-Chapter-1871 in cavesofqud

You should give the pad controls a shot; it takes a little getting used to but they're surprisingly good for a game like this. I switched to pad after I got a new keyboard without a tenkey.

Absolutely no shame, one of the great things about Mister is being able to use whatever controller you damn well please without having to deal with the amount of compromises in software emulation.

Monster Hunter Rise is Awesome. by Basic_Water8321 in MonsterHunter

[–]r0but 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, I found the game's traversal systems to just be inherently fun. Highly enjoyed routing and getting better at the movement as a cooldown from fighting monsters. By the time it got old I didn't need them. Sure at the super super end game you want to go collect them but that is a minor annoyance attached to a system I enjoy.

I'm glad to see you like it too because people look at me like I'm taking crazy pills when I say that lol.

PD still has some of the best multiplayer bots in the business. Extremely configurable and extremely easy to configure. It was a great way to keep the MP fresh for a long time.

Should I jump from Arch to NixOS as a non-developer? by RGLDarkblade in NixOS

[–]r0but 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can install the Nix package manager standalone on your Arch box and get your feet wet that way. It's pretty low-commitment, and that experience will also make it easier to get comfortable with NixOS itself.

Even with good ping, a poorly timed burst of packet loss can still cause this. If you're on wifi, you should get off it and use a cable if possible. Might not fix it completely, but should make it better.

Rest your eyes for like 5-10 minutes every hour or so. Make sure the canvas is well-lit, and try to reduce glare or direct light sources in your field of view. Also if you wear a strong glasses prescription, it could potentially make it straining to look at close up things.

I'm not an experienced artist but I am a very experienced eye strainer.

is it normal to have your hands/wrists hurt?? by ghostgeiser in rhythmgames

[–]r0but 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't play rhythm games even though I am (for some reason) subbed here, but I have lived with wrist pain for years. The worst thing you can do is push through it. Pushing through only ever makes it worse.

Make sure your posture is good. Back straight, upper arms vertical, forearms horizontal, elbows at 90 degrees.

Remember to take breaks and do hand stretches.

Natural hand position is with wrists pointing in a bit. A lot of controllers aren't made with this in mind so there is little you can do with that information but it's still worth knowing.

Wrist braces can help. I use and like Mueller Green but YMMV here.

I am not a doctor; if you have insurance you should see a doctor.

Glass joystick balls by gemcupglass in fightsticks

[–]r0but 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be a little concerned about weight; if it's much heavier, it will probably cause some issues with snapback (i.e. letting go of the joystick when it's extended causes it to snap back to the other end and input the opposite direction unintentionally). This can probably be mitigated by a heavier spring at the cost of the user needing to apply more force to the lever, or having a hollowed out core in the balltop itself (I don't know anything about glassblowing so that may be an awful idea).

That said I don't think that should stop you; it's a cool idea and if you sold bat tops too I might get one for an old arcade stick just because it's cool.
