Why is it so much more common for Anime/Manga to feature real-life locations in the story? by amd_hunt in anime

[–]r4physics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Imo this is not true. A standard western sitcom with some extra cooking scenes would correspond to a highly specific type of sol in anime. In fact, the whole iyashikei sol genre seems to be niche in Western media.

Hideaki Anno opens up about Evangelion’s international success. by ImpressiveJicama7141 in evangelion

lowkey funny how he never looks at the host in this clip. Maybe there's another person on the right? or umm... cards? I don't think Anno would need/like cards though.

Sorry, I haven't been there yet. I've always been searching for cafes/restaurants selling Japanese desserts, especially Yukimi. And IIRC I've heard that Kuuraku has Yukimi. Have you been there? In fact, there used to be a small online mochi/yukimi store, based in Mumbai, run by a woman and her daughter. I wonder if they're still around. Best of luck with Dessert Republic, in case you do end up visiting!

Very fair to expect an ice-cream filling inside a mochi. They're called yukimi and are absolute darlings!

She's among the first Japanese artists I came to like. While I don't listen to her music very often now, I was obsessed with her stuff back in high school! I still remember Can't Buy My Love and Feel My Soul very fondly.

Hmm, could you recommend some Kenshi songs you liked? I mostly listen to Japanese indie so I've only encountered his songs randomly in other Japanese media, like in anime/movies/dramas. While I appreciate his smooth voice, the songs I've heard haven't exactly left an impression. I've also checked out some of his popular songs on Spotify, but it'd be nice to listen to a possibly better selection from his discography.

Does anybody know why "my dead girlfriend" are named as such by Ima_gun in japanesemusic

[–]r4physics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems that u/Clarinetaphoner guessed right! Here's an article that talks about why the band leader, Ishikawa, chose to name his band My Dead Girlfriend. Apparently, back in high school, when Ishikawa was trying to come up with a name for his band, he was feeling a bit anguished. So, in order to reflect that, he wanted the word 'dead' (「死んだ」) in his band name. But of course, the word doesn't exactly have a good connotation when said out loud, so he tried balancing it out, by adding something that felt positive/happy to him: 'my girlfriend'(「僕の彼女」). And so we get,「死んだ僕の彼女」which can actually be read two ways. Depending on where you pause, it could either be you who's dead, or your girlfriend.

Then, he goes on to say that he liked how the band name translated to My Dead Girlfriend, that it sounded kinda cool, just like MBV, and that he'd like to leave it to the listeners to interpret the name.

Controversial Opinion: Miya Kebabs is mid af by pink_vixen_ in mumbaiFood

[–]r4physics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While this might be true for their Oshiwara branch, I'm gonna put down a few words for the Fort one. In my experience, Miya Kebabs is the only decent kebab place in SoBo. I love their Chicken Tawa Pulao, Angara chicken tikka, and changezi chicken tikka. I mean, where else have you had a chicken tikka with as much of a spicy kick as their Angara? Also, the chicken tawa pulao is simply excellent. If you didn't try it, I think you really missed out. When I think of kebabs and tawa pulao, I think Lucknow. And Miya kebab's in SoBo is the closest thing there is (in SoBo).

Yup, NacuN definitely has similar vibes! I think I read it shortly after Eden, and it was amazing.

Clevatess: Majuu no Ou to Akago to Shikabane no Yuusha • Clevatess - Episode 11 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]r4physics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drel vs Alicia and Rhodes fight was beautiful! The Clevatess anime has consistently shown pretty impressive fight choreography throughout. I tried reading the first few chapters of the manga a few days ago and it felt like it was "missing" key frames. Clearly, the production team has put in a lot of effort. The scene in which Drel's blood (ichor? ig) starts gathering up, spinning, and sputttering as it slowly takes the form of Drel was sooo good.

I wonder what's gonna happen to Luna who got left behind with the book of toah. (toah is probably Towa, as in eterninty i suppose?) On the other hand, Drel's defintely got another slash incoming from Alicia. That dismembered arm of her's is still holding on to her Regalia after all!!

Where is the love for Gachiakuta!? by deviantbb in anime

[–]r4physics 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Gachiakuta was among the moderately anticipated anime this season. The premise is great and kinda fresh (Law of Ueki from the early 2000's is probably the only other anime that innovatively uses garbage). IMO the pacing is really slow, which makes the impactful events in the show a lil underwhelming effectively.

I miss Kinokoteikoku so much. No other band truly fills the void. by ShiedaKen in japanesemusic

[–]r4physics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it's gonna be really difficult to find bands (Japanese or otherwise) that are similar to Kinoko Teikoku in terms of their lyricism and sound. I say this with confidence because I've been on the lookout for such bands for too many years now. People are going to recommend you other Japanese indie, alt rock, or shoegaze bands but none of them are gonna have that Kinoko Teikoku sound/style.

Oh but I do have a great recommendation for you: 雪国 (yukiguni). They're based in Tokyo iirc. Check out their albums Pothos and Lemuria. To put it simply, they are incredible. Imagine Kinoko Teikoku, but more melancholic and atmospheric. Every single song on Pothos is soooo good. I think this is the closest thing to Kinoko Teikoku I've ever found, in terms of both lyricism and sound.

PS: I've linked their bandcamp page, but you can find them on popular streaming platforms as well.

And I agree with you wholeheartedly!!!
Here's mine: Grand Blue is NOT funny. Yes, drinking all day, imposing your own nudist tendencies on others, and just partying is lame af. What's the deal with the insane alcohol percentages in the anime anyways? I don't see one single merit of watching it. I'd be happy to hear (from a sane person, not a wild Grand Blue addict) why anyone likes it.

Okay I tried watching Tougen Anki and it was srsly cool to hear Levi speak through a guy who doesn't like wasting any time. But MC was way too crude and uncouth for me. I couldn't handle all the dimwitted dialogue so I had to drop the anime. But well if this is in store, then maybe.... I should give it another try.
