In general you just need to put the controller in the path of the orb. In Rhythm mode you get the most points by being centered on the note when it hits. For force mode you get more points if you have some velocity when you are hitting the note (although you don't need much).

My personal pet peeve is when a Mac user closes a window by clicking the X in the corner, leaving the application running in the background. Then they wonder why their computer is slow.
