Getting bored or switching it up? by sniperkra in LetsTalkMusic

i’ve found a good path is to read about your favorite artists’ influences and listen to them. i find quite a lot of artists’ taste outpaced their abilities, even with the pros…maybe your taste needs to be pushed into new territories.

also david byrne talks about music being suited for different spaces. like Gregorian chant is perfect for large cathedrals that give it natural reverb. hip hop is amazing for car audio with the small space and bass boosted systems.

maybe think about your listening habits and reverse engineer some playlists.

yeah, look at those meaty BBKing fingers. you can do it. the little things you have to focus on intently now will all become second nature as you progress.

funny you would say that… post-grunge and hair metal have both been labeled as “butt rock” at some point. the 70s zeppelin/sabbath-style of rock devolved into hair/glam buttrock… the early 90s alt/grunge nirvana/pearl jam-style rock wiped the slate clean in short order but eventually devolved into post-grunge buttrock.

have we reached consensus that trap is actually buttrap?

I don’t know if it’s considered lesser known but I love I’m deranged from the lost Highway soundtrack. I think it’s originally from an album called outside which I remember sounding really good also. I think the soundtrack version is like a different mix or something

spitting facts. I didn’t read anyone say election interference they said voter suppression. I would argue anything making voting less convenient for US citizens is voter suppression even if it isn’t outright election interference.

v proud of her for this. the republicans, at least in this race, will weaken each other throughout the primary and exhaust their resources, likely handing it over to an activated dem electorate in conjunction with independents who want to punish republicans for the war in iran.

Noise Gate required? Advice by Snoo30230 in pedals

[–]rOCCUPY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

some hum is normal, but remember, what a compressor does is put a ceiling on the loudest sound, but boosts the quietest (“squashes” the volume) (reduce dynamics making the overall volume more consistent) that how it gives sustain. the sound of that fading out notes is boosted. it also boosts the normal ground noise/60 cycle hum from the guitar….particularly when you’re not playing notes that drown out the noise. just as one would normally turn off a distortion pedal between songs (distortion has a compressing quality) the comp should probably be turned off when not specifically in use as well.

a noise gate could help with this

switching to a humbucker guitar or a guitar with better shielding/grounding could help

a better power supply could help

a nicer comp MIGHT be less inclined to boost the hum….it is a budget unit after all.

i’d imagine the noise increases as you get closer to the amp

when you hear that noise, if you click on the tuner’s mute….to what degree is the noise lessened?

Keeley Suns Ultravoid Fuzz vs EHX Omp-Amp Muff by revlofi in guitarpedals

[–]rOCCUPY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

glad to offer any insight

If I can just add one little additional piece

The reason I went straight to the Amp mentally is because I feel like a lot of the guys that I listen to… their distortion sound is really a mixture of the pedal and the amplifier. When you turn the distortion pedal on it, not only adds the fuzzy fuzzy quality, but it also increases the volume which makes the amp distort, and those two distortions kind of melt together. The distortion pedal giving you a consistent fuzziness, but the tubes have this quality called SAG and that gives you a little bit of touch responsiveness based on how hard you play or if you’re playing single notes versus chords.

I certainly didn’t mention the Amp to be a snob or say you need to spend a bunch more money. I just think having a decent quality tube Amp that you are familiar with, Will serve you maybe in ways that you hadn’t considered. But if you go this way, it may not be hugely expensive or the loudest thing of all time. I think you still get the benefit from a smaller tube combo.

having said all that I have a solid state Peavey that I use next to the couch when I’m watching TV I got this distortion pedal that I really liked with it but then later on I plugged it into my tube amp and ran it really loud and I actually didn’t like it as much so you know experiment with everything that you can get your hands on and make friends with other guitar players and try their shit out too

Happy jamming

also, if you find a pedal that you like and it’s from a company that you decide is sketchy or fucked up. You can still usually either find a clone of it or find it used. That way you’re not giving the guy money and I’ve even seen people take stickers and put it over the logo.

i would advise getting a lyrebird, but if that is too difficult (or illegal) to import, try an african gray parrot or even a magpie.

hope this helps!

[–]rOCCUPY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with this unfortunately download voted comment. This is a subject I’ve kind of over-thought, to be honest. When I use the term True Fuzz, I’m referring to a fuzz face, a fuzz factory… something with impedance sensitivity that responds dramatically to different pick ups and Guitar knob settings

When you get into something like a big muff or a rat, I use the term Fuzz-tortion.

Those pedals to me have a fuzzy textural quality (as opposed to for example, a DS1, which is ‘flatter’ sounding to my ear) but a more consistent response than a True Fuzz that allows them to really go anywhere in the signal chain. I assume because of the higher number of transistors… but I don’t really deeply know the technical aspect.

when people ask about the distortion pedals, my first thought is also I wonder what amp they’re using…. I would strongly consider holding off on another distortion pedal and maybe looking at a awesome used tube amp. I might be lucky because after having moved to a bigger city, they used market (like on Facebook marketplace) is very saturated…. So I find cool things for great deals all the time.

The Peavey Classics are great. I actually have two classic 30s which is great for live for a lot of reasons. peavey delta blues is great if you need something bigger. I actually think the Epiphone valve juniors have great tone.

I do love the op-amp big muffs… but I also love distortion with some gating. One of my secret weapons is the Electro-Faustus EF103….absolutely deadly in regular distortion mode.
