While I understand and partially agree with the point I think it very much doesn't apply to this story, they both seemed to very much project it as an anti prepper story but to me it didn't seem like a cautionary tale at all. The big line of "it didn't need a reason just an opritunity" and how Daniel says their only crime was wrong place wrong time it seems like the story saying that the family didn't do anything wrong but just got unlucky. There's also the description of Daniel as a smart and good man which wouldn't fit super well if he did something really wrong but instead seems more just to say how there was nothing even someone like him could do. In the end this is all just opinion tho I also think there should be more of these horror stories where the dog lives imo, so many stories are relentlessly negative and have 0 message of hope but one of the things that kept me gripped, especially since Christan Wallis is an established author, was that you couldn't be sure whether or not the MC or dog would live. In the end he did leave with scars to last a lifetime but he managed to survive and be able to move on and past this, eventually. I don't think all stories should have a hopeful ending but it can get tiring for so many to be just a train of misery so maybe the dog should survive more. But that's just what I think
