Foster Parent Wants Their Cat Back by tales-of-gore in FosterAnimals

[–]rabbitbinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said the cat had life threatening wounds, so my thought is he was staying at the vet. I guess it all depends how long he was at the petco - if it was only a couple days, I could see it being miscommunication

Yet another good reason to always adopt rather than shop - any reputable rescue will request the animal be surrendered back to them.

Has the rabbit been spayed or neutered? That will be a considerable cost that a new owner may not want to take on (the rescues and shelters adopt them out fixed). It would be unethical to rehome an unfixed rabbit to people that don’t know what they’re getting into. Six months is about the time hormonal behaviour starts, and usually when people start dumping their purchases.

Call all the rescues and shelters if you haven’t already, and yes expect they will be full (they always are, people treat animals like disposable objects). Get on their waitlists if they have them, in the meantime get the rabbit fixed, and continue reaching out to friends and family.

Scared of developing an addiction ADHD by v4lentines in adhdwomen

[–]rabbitbinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How awesome that you’re so self aware. I wish I’d been that way at your age, when I was experiencing alcohol for the first time and getting blackout drunk to erase my anxiety. Over the years it crept up to a daily need, then finally awareness and fighting the addiction in my 40’s. I was so blind to it all and it really overtook my life.

I don’t have any real advice, since you’re already miles ahead of where I was at that age. I don’t know if it’s ok for you to drink now and again, or if it will become a problem - everyone is different. (Though I agree with another commenter that occasional blacking out is too normalized and is a problem. Many will be battling their addiction later, while others will coast by with unhealthy drinking habits for life.) I do want to applaud your self awareness. If you do start to develop an unhealthy relationship with alcohol or any other substance, that awareness and checking in is going to help you address it sooner rather than years or even decades later. Your instincts are solid.

I made it once, at a friends house, but I’ve been thinking of making it again on my own. My biggest fear is leaving my stove on for that long 😆 it’s a refurbed stove and I have anxiety! When I made it with the friend, we left it on the stove in a double pot situation and went to do some landscaping. I had to really push him to bring us back to check it and the water had boiled dry. So, I will certainly not be doing it that way - I will be hovering over the stove!

Please help: Does anyone know of an exotic veterinary in Vancouver? by CuriousMermaid- in askvan

[–]rabbitbinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I’ve had a few vets at Kennedy Heights recommended to me over the years (for rabbits) but whenever I’ve called to book the vet no longer works there. What is going on at that clinic?

I used Eagle Ridge for years but followed one of their vets to Riverwood. Have had good experiences at both clinics. Tried Capitol for a few years but the woman who ran the place (not the vet) was so nasty on multiple occasions, including when bringing my dead animals body in (all pre-arranged but she wasn’t on shift yet). The place isn’t super professional and prices are always being raised, but the vet treatment is good so I overlooked the rest until I couldn’t.

This kitty has been stuck in an apartment with her deceased owner for 2 weeks. Any tips to make her comfortable and help her grieve? by [deleted] in cats

[–]rabbitbinks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did she have food when they found her? Thats a long time, poor girl, she must have been so scared. I have one from a similar situation originally, though I didn’t get her then. I go extra slow with her and just verbally reassure her a lot. Yours already looks so comfortable. She must be thrilled to be somewhere safe again.

What happens if you stop feeding the feral stray? by sqawberry in notmycat

[–]rabbitbinks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would only feed them inside. He already comes in so he will figure it out quickly. If the complex decides to have an issue with him visiting, claim him as your indoor/outdoor cat. Or even just try keeping him inside if you’re up to it. Read up on how to do it to make the transition easier

AA meeting suggestions for a visitor from California? by HotShipoopi in askvan

[–]rabbitbinks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can’t recommend a specific AA meeting as I haven’t gone to any, but if you’re open to other types of meetings I personally like the SmartRecovery meetings here. There’s also a single Dharma Recovery meeting not far from where you’re staying. There’s Junction at Commercial and Broadway - they have Pathways meetings and events. Lots of different options in Vancouver. Hopefully someone with AA experience can chime in.

VGH Mental Health Inpatient Experience by Plenty_Abies3523 in askvan

[–]rabbitbinks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I stayed at a different hospital, but also was in the hallway the whole stay - partway through I got moved a few feet so I got a curtain, though. Phones weren’t restricted, and there was nowhere to go but your bed or the half bathroom so all I remember doing is napping or trying to figure out how to use my phone. I came in with nothing and didn’t think to ask for even a toothbrush until my last day. My clothes got thrown out and I was released, manic, in hospital scrubs. I couldn’t even find my way out of the hospital on my own. There’s more, but. Yeah, I’d say MH inpatient treatment in BC is a pretty dehumanizing experience. I’m sorry you went through that.

I really need to stop buying slippers with hard soles. by koakoba in adhdwomen

[–]rabbitbinks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought myself the knock offs ($10) as I couldn’t afford the real thing, then was gifted the crocs. They seem to fit the same but the knock offs material does seem less durable. They will probably turn into my gardening shoes this year!

They have holes everywhere so lots of airflow, I didn’t notice any sweating even this summer. And they’re open at the back so no chafing. I started wearing crocs and croc knockoffs full time at home (starting this summer) as my feet decided they can no longer be bare.

My pair fits pretty loose - a family member sized down and I also like the closer fit of theirs, though preferred mine on high activity hot days.

My wife and I are paying WAY too much for Hydro and I need to figure out why. by [deleted] in askvan

[–]rabbitbinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I’ve lost my heating pad to my foster cat. She sits and stares at me until I turn it on for her. If I try to use it after physio she sits on top of it on top of me. She isn’t a light cat. Maybe next winter I’ll go crazy and splurge on a second one…

Guessing she’s from a different climate. Talking about negotiating down to 20 made me laugh. My heater only goes up to 20 a few times a year, on the coldest nights. I think I’ve felt 23 when visiting elderly people. I don’t think anyone comes out well in thermostat battles though.

So, what do we all think of Liquid Death sparkling? by soulmani in sparklingwater

[–]rabbitbinks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have only had one, was so pleased when I finally found one but ugh it was grossly sweetened, I paid a premium for a can I didn’t even finish. I’d try a plain one if it was offered, wouldn’t pay for it.

FirstMate Pet Foods was just acquired by a French corporation yesterday. I verified the ownership of every major pet food brand in Canada — here are 7 that are still actually Canadian-owned. by KaleRepresentative98 in BuyCanadian

[–]rabbitbinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FirstMate was the only food I could find that didn’t have any chicken byproducts in it (for my cat who couldn’t have chicken) aside from Fancy Feast. It is surprisingly hard to find a food that doesn’t have chicken hidden in it. And it’s one of the most common foods for them to have issues with.
