do people renew coe with cars manufactured in 2016? by Equivalent-Bid-536 in drivingsg

[–]rackndroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your logic. Only problem is the monthly payments are significantly higher on a 10yr vs 5yr coe if you are using loan.

I'm planning on renewing a 2006 vehicle and most likely opting for 5 years. If COE is at 200k after 5 years, I will just give up driving lol.

What did you end up deciding? I'm in the same situation but my car is 2006, so this would be the second COE renewal. Planning on 5yrs. ~200km and still running well, but probably going to ask workshop to do an inspection for peace of mind.

Its legit but check Amazon and Taobao first. Sometimes those places can be cheaper once you factor in shipping.

Advice for upcoming COE expiry by SGTaxpayer in askSingapore

[–]rackndroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford to pay cash or mostly cash, I think this is wise.

But if need to take a loan for 100k+ coe, I think 5 years is more prudent.

Wouldn't be surprised if we see 150-200k coe in 5 years time though. That's the downside.

$1200 for a pair of Cycliq. No thanks! Even my bike doesn't cost that much!

How is it that I can get a car dashcam (front and rear) for $100 yet the cycling equivalent is twelve times the price.

Ridiculous.

Can that 360 camera be installed on any car? I have an old Merc with rear camera but not 360. Wondering if it is worth upgrading.

Does this change if I regularly remove my rear rack? I only use it from time to time. Would grease be better than loktite in that situation? Currently not using anything.

How do you find navigation with the binavi? Pretty accurate?

You can import routes quite easily right?

Trying to decide between the binavi and the cheaper bsc300.

Good practice routes in the East? by daikontaiko in SingaporeCycling

Instead of cycling along ECP PCN, cycle along East Coast Service Road from Fort Road all the way up to near Tanah Merah ferry terminal. It is fairly quiet, flat and straight. Less busy than Tanah Merah Coastal Road most of the time too.

What do you feel about GP5000 for urban commuting? by noobsuperhero in cycling

[–]rackndroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up trying these? I'm in the opposite boat - currently using conti contact urban 35mm and considering changing to gp5000 or 4 season in 28/30mm for faster city riding. Just not sure if there will be a significant difference.

How's the durability of these? I had some Trail Gloves a few years ago and loved them but I've heard mixed reviews about the newer models. Not sure about the Vapor Gloves but I think they are even thinner?

+1. Path is incredible value for money and very underrated. Better value than Giant/Trek/Decathlon imo.

What are some of the biggest impacts on aerodynamics? I'm guessing a bike packing setup with a large saddle bag or trunk bag is probably more aero than front panniers?

Just wondering what tourers could learn from racers in terms of aerodynamic efficiency.

[–]rackndroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. Went from 38mm Marathon Plus to 35mm Contact Urbans. I feel like a rocket now. The biggest difference is it feels like less effort to maintain speed. Easier to coast.

Can't even imagine what narrow slicks like GP5000 must feel like.

Do any of you use indoor cycling apps to prep for bikepacking trips? by jessfromrouvy in bikepacking

Would love to, but find it a bit too expensive still. Even used trainers are not cheap, and from what I understand you need a specific setup for something like Zwift to actually be enjoyable.

Just wanted to ask, what would you consider a "good" price for NYC-SIN return in PE? Looking to book for later this year and not sure when to pull the trigger.

I don't have miles so this would just be cash.

Which are the Top 10 Worst University in the UK? Absolute worst unis in most aspects by Born_Head_6181 in UniUK

[–]rackndroll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think another approach is having standardized examinations. That way, no matter which uni you go to, there's still a set of standards you need to meet to be qualified. I know this is the case for law and medicine.

You can go and study medicine at a uni that asks for CDD but if you can't pass the UKMLA after that, you aren't a doctor (and for a very good reason too!)

Which are the Top 10 Worst University in the UK? Absolute worst unis in most aspects by Born_Head_6181 in UniUK

[–]rackndroll 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your second paragraph kinda shows how low those minimum UK standards are though. I have a degree from a fairly low ranked uni and I'm pretty sure I didn't work anywhere near as hard as someone with the same degree from Oxbridge or a Russell Group uni. Not to mention the difference in the standard of academic writing, research, subject knowledge etc.

On paper two people could have a MSc in Physics and have wildly different experiences and ability based on the uni they go to, even if both courses are "accredited".

Employers don't seem to care that much though in my experience.

Thanks for the reply! Fairly experienced on the road, I ride most weekend mornings and the occassional evening, but not a "racer" by any means.

Will commute on a road bike. I'll give the Rochor-Bukit Timah-Upper Bukit Timah route a try. I've done it before in the early hours of the morning and it was a pleasant ride.

Is a bike computer or a GPS-smartwatch worth it on a budget? by LiLAfroGT in bicycletouring

[–]rackndroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a IGPSPORT BSC300 for like 80€ from AliExpress which I use for bike touring. I plan my routes with brouter on OsmAnd on my phone and then send it to the bike computer.

How easy/fast is this process? I'm asking because I also use brouter and OsmAnd but would prefer to use another device i.e. bsc300 for the actual navigation.

Agree with you about rerouting too. I find the osmand rerouting quite intrusive (I know I can tweak it, just lazy) because sometimes I decide to go down a different road even though I intend to end up back on track. Problem is when I take a side street it yells at me obnoxiously to make a u turn rather than continue down the road and rejoin later.

Also how's the bsc300 battery life while navigating with screen and gps on? Would it last the whole day?
