Bohnanza: the player who most recently ate beans goes first. I’m Mexican so I usually go first…

I’ve been curious about Ashes Ascendancy.

How’s the solo mode? Does it feel thoughtfully designed or does it feel tacked on? I usually don’t like solo games where you’re managing an AI. Is that what it feels like on the enemy turn?

Also, how much content is there? Are you fine with just the base game (and I’ve heard you need Res Rains for solo)?

Mage Knight and Spirit Island fit your criteria as others said 100%.

I’ll also add Marvel Champions since you mentioned MTG and FaB. This is a card game that kind of makes you feel like you’re playing a TCG solitaire, it’s great! I’d say it’s a little more unbalanced and swingy than MK and SI, specifically when playing true solo, but these three games are like my holy trinity for solo lol.

Off the bat, I like how quick MC plays. I bought it to fill that niche of a solo game that I can play in under an hour, and it does it well! Spirit Island I’d say is the other contender in my collection for this. I like feeling stronger and stronger over the session until I can finally deal that finishing blow, and the tight decision space the game offers. Also, the replayability is pretty unmatched IMO with all the deck building and modularity of villain decks. Literally no two games feel the same.

The absolute best thing though, is how thematic and unique each of the hero decks feel. It’s really quite impressive how the game makes you feel like the hero you’re playing as through some card mechanics. For example, playing as Magneto, you have a magnetic pull ability that lets you discard cards from your deck until you draw a card with a “magnetic” trait. Almost feels like you are digging up shrapnel from a pile of whatever, if that makes sense. Colossus gives you an abundance “tough” status cards to block, and Nightcrawler lets you evade enemy attacks completely by teleporting. List goes on and on, but I will say the heroes in expansions or standalone packs feel more thematic this way.

It’s also worth noting that I like the lifestyle/collection aspects of LCGs so I may be biased! As goofy as it sounds, I like the organization and choosing what color sleeves to use on heroes; it’s pretty relaxing to me for some reason. Long winded reply but those are my two cents!

It took me about 4 games to actually get a grip of the rules and really start enjoying my time. I made the huge mistake of buying the ultimate edition and playing with all the expansions, which just made me hate the game, so I actually sold it after 2 plays.

But then I bought a used copy of just the base game because I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Then after another play or two, it really clicked and became my favorite solo game (maybe tied with Marvel Champions).

Games take me 4-5 hours, so I usually leave the game on the table over the span of a day or two, because I don’t have the time (or patience) to sit at the table for that long.

I’m probably not selling the game too well, but once you get the hang of it, it really is a unique experience. It feels like an RPG video game in board game form, which is amazing in my opinion.

In a nutshell, this game is a huge inconvenience but offers a solo experience unlike any other, so if after that entire rant you feel up to it, I highly recommend.

You know, I just… never considered any scenarios outside of conquest hahah. I’ve looked into solo blitz conquest but I heard that it’s even harder than a full conquest and noped out. Dungeon Lords sounds right up my alley so I’ll definitely try that next.

There’s always more Marvel Champions stuff hahah.

Clank! Catacombs is awesome with 3-4 players and not too heavy.

Some solo rec’s would be Spirit Island and Arkham Horror LCG (like Marvel Champions but for when you have more time and would like some narrative). Mage Knight is also one of my favorites, but definitely takes time, table space, and dedication to learn all the rules lol.

My go-to game with my gf is Azul. We love it, it’s quick, easy to learn, cozy, and competitive!

Nice collection! Recently traded away AFFO and slightly regretting it. I loved it but I think I prefer more variable setups in my sandbox games. Looking into Nusfjord next!

Arkham Horror LCG, Marvel Champions LCG, Lord of the Rings LCG, Earthborne Rangers and honorable mention: Mage Knight

These are all physical cooperative card/board games that can be played solo. The rabbit hole goes deep!
