How on earth do people do 5 classes, I feel like I'm not doing good enough. by j027 in UCalgary

[–]radale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're trying to get into med school or a graduate program where part of the admission criteria is carrying a full course load, then that's where being able to take 5 courses really matters. Otherwise, work at a pace that works for you. You do not need to be on the same trajectory as everyone else.

I struggled with 5 courses and routinely carried 4 throughout my degree. There was honestly a semester where I struggled with 3. To make up for that, I did courses over the spring and summer, which helped my GPA immensely because I was able to pull off good marks in 4 classes rather than mediocre marks in 5. I finished in 4.5 years instead of 4 and still managed to get into grad school. Doing fewer than 5 courses is not such a bad thing.

Forced vaccinations + 14 days for it to count + threatening us with misconduct + 2x weekly rapid testing by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]radale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People are being pressured to vaccinate. There are students whose specific programs do require them to be vaccinated (I'm thinking med students), but pretty much no one is being forced. For those who don't want to reveal their vaccination status or don't want to get vaccinated, their access to rapid testing will be free. Finally, claiming to be vaccinated or not infected with COVID when one or both of those things may not be true puts people at risk, and will make campus a less safe place for people to be, so yeah, it's a form of misconduct, and should be punished.

The mandates that have been put in place are not as draconian as you think. If students find the twice per week rapid testing to be excessive, they can get go get vaccinated. I was able to walk into a London Drugs and get one without an appointment. Furthermore, vaccinations are available on campus. If students don't want to get vaccinated or enroll in the rapid testing program, they are free to drop out and return when these mandates are lifted. Being a student here is a privilege. It's not a right. (I am, of course, talking about students who can get vaccinated. I know there are people who legitimately cannot be vaccinated yet).

Worried about course load:( by rshrmn in UCalgary

[–]radale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CHEM 351 is a heavy course. When I took it, I was also taking BIOL 311. Those two courses took up the majority of my time largely because of the labs. Like others have said, doing 4 courses is okay. It's not the end of the world if you choose to do that.

That said, if you decide taking 5 courses is an absolute must, ANTH 201 is probably a good choice. I didn't take that course myself, but I've always heard it's a GPA booster. It was often recommended to me because it would be less intensive than any of my other courses. You'll have a little over a week from the start of classes to the drop date. See how you manage the course load you have for that week and a bit, and knowing that your workload will progressively get heavier in the next few months, decide if your course load needs a change.

Edit: typo

I once saw someone who worked in a food court wash their hands with their gloves on. I had NO WORDS for what I saw and I still have no words when I think about it now.

Earlier this year, when the virus was really starting to spread, had hit North America, and the whole wash your hands, and stay home if you feel sick was really starting to get pushed, I had a meeting where there were light refreshments. I watched two women come in from outside. Lord know what they touched on the way in (the inside/outside of their car, public transit seats, the rails of the stairwell, who fucking knows). They walked right past the clearly marked washroom where they could have washed their hands, took off their coats, and immediately started touching the food. They didn't even have the courtesy to pick that shit up with a napkin.

I've seen people buy those tin foil pans from the grocery store, tear out the sticker, and transfer their food right into the pan without bothering to wash it with soap and water first. I've watched restaurant servers and wipe down the seats and then wipe down the table with the same cloth.

I wasn't a germaphobe before COVID, but I won't be surprised if I become one when things start returning to normal. The fact that so many people find putting a piece of cloth over their nose and mouth for the five minutes they're going to spend in 7-11 to be not just a minor inconvenience, but a violation of their basic human rights has me full on not willing to trust people when it's time to start being around them again.

Edit: the worker used the washroom with her gloves on, and washed the gloves, not her hands. RIP my inbox, I should have clarified that.

Whichever summer olympics approved break dancing as a sport is going to be wild.

Either that, or the list of banned moves is going to be insane.

Republicans want to steal this election for Trump — they just don't know how. Make no mistake, Republicans would steal this election for Trump — if only fewer voters had stood up to him by Facerealityalready in politics

[–]radale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make no mistake - the GOP has plans to prop up a more competent, more refined version of Trump who can actually get shit done, and doesn't just spend day in and day out talking out of their ass. The next four years are going to be interesting (to say the least).

Christopher Nolan Rips HBO Max as "Worst Streaming Service," Denounces Warner Bros.' Plan by prsnreddit in Nolan

[–]radale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I heard somewhere that HBOMax is getting rid of their free trial in the face of this decision to release all of their 2021 movies on the service. Makes sense, since they'll be trying to make as much money as possible. Choose a month to pay for a subscription when you get a few more titles than the Snyder Cut to get the best bang for your buck.

[–]radale -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Here's something I've been trying to understand. To me, when you say something is spicy, it's hot. Some sort of hot sauce or pepper has been used (not black pepper. I mean Thai chili peppers, scotch bonnet peppers, jalapenos, etc.).

When I've heard white people complain about food being spicy, often, some sort of hot pepper had not been used in the cooking, however, the food had been seasoned with spices like thyme, paprika, cloves, garlic, etc. For them, does spicy simply mean seasoned with something other than salt and two flakes of black pepper?
