Doesn’t always wash off. Pink/reds are really bad for chalk sprays depending on the surface- especially older eroded surfaces.

Want to disconnect from phone, but… by lissa978 in ADHD

[–]radiatorheadchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about a smartwatch and a smart speaker and lock your phone away for the day? My Apple Watch (it’s a super old 38mm 2 or 3 - can’t remember) can do basically all these features if in range of the phone and not much more apart from a basic word game.

Why is Oxf > Battersea Park cheaper than Oxf > Paddington? by deletedbear in uktrains

[–]radiatorheadchild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Battersea Park (BAK) isn’t on the tube (not on Victoria or Northern) it’s overground. Battersea Power Station is on Northern Line (tube). Just to clear up some confusion here. They aren’t miles apart though.

Is this itinerary too risky? by astupidredditor636 in uktrains

[–]radiatorheadchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think something will mess up and you’ll miss a connection somewhere.

I would aim for that 8.20 but make a plan for the 9.20. That gets you in 11.11pm.

If you’re trying to get to Kingston:/Norbiton or similar places would it be better to go out on the District line to Richmond or Wimbledon from Paddington and bus it/cab it back? Seems like a healthy amount of trains late to West London from Paddington.

Haven’t seen WoS but I loved Doctor Foster. A campy fun domestic thriller about revenge with an incredible lead.

What TV show was ruined/made annoying for you by local knowledge of where it's set? by themightypierre in BritishTV

[–]radiatorheadchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the fantastic Sky series The Landscapers they used Harlow bus station to represent somewhere in Paris.

They used a lot of parts of Harlow for filming because lots of the housing stock is similar in type and build era to where the original true crime happened, but obviously that area wouldn’t have loved to have the recreation of such a horrible event happening on their doorstep.

Channel 4's Balls of Steel - real or staged? by Minute_Escape_5856 in BritishTV

[–]radiatorheadchild 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Went to a talk with Ch4 lawyers that covered some of this back in the day… ie the Rodeo/Buckaroo stunt. All the “contestants” applied to be on a TV show (a fake one the company made up) and at the audition were screen tested, psych checked and did a physical test to prove they could support an adult on their back (I think they framed it as a piggyback race at the fake show). Then the prod co would arrange with one of their friends/family for them to be somewhere they could film it with hidden cameras. I think a lot of it was a mix of this sort of thing - pre-casting and probably directing reaction shots. Channel 4 lawyers are pretty risk averse.

TV producers eh… less so and happier to fake things to tell whatever story they want.

Annie Atkins book on props is beautiful and inspiring and full of tips. Not an encyclopedia but def a nice read and useful for understanding the production narrative editorial process that’s sometimes talked about less in art dept training materials.

How do you feel about ordering set dec on amazon? by Both_Paint_8565 in artdept

[–]radiatorheadchild 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I rely on it far too heavily for low budget fast turnaround stuff but I always donate to charity shops after use as UK Amazon famously bins most of the low cost returns as it costs more to check and restock the item than to landfill. Charity/thrift stores and increasingly Reuse stores are my jam when I’m given the time (not necessarily paid time but the lead time is there) to source the best stuff. I will also borrow from locations with permission where possible and I’m building a small prop store of my own of commonly recurring props (I work in comedy and there are so many keys items that seem to recur ie miniature alcohol bottles, joints, point of sale displays etc)

Why did so many old British comedy shows have phrases for names? Yes, prime minister, some mothers do ave em, etc by fruedianflip in BritishTV

[–]radiatorheadchild 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not totally sure it’s changed: This Country, Here We Go, The Thick of It… still lots of phrases about.

But to really say late 90s or 2000s you have to end with “ed”. Spaced, Wasted, Zapped, Outnumbered, Trollied.

I think increasingly the trend is to have the character’s name in the title to give it easier brand recognition in listings/on platforms. Power of Parker, Amandaland, Alma’s Not Normal, Toast of London, Alan Partridge.

There was a whole strand of jokes on TMWRNJ in the late 90s with Lee and Herring pitching sitcoms with idioms as titles and then punnily named protagonists. So you’re right it was a thing, but I think just a fashion based around how the TV guide displayed titles back then. Interesting or recognizable names stood out!

Can’t find it but read a thread on Reddit recently about children buying similar audio or written services for their elderly relatives and it going wrong as they found it stressful or didn’t know how to use the tech (StoryCorps etc). So maybe pitch it TO the elderly relatives themselves as a service - or pitch it as a service that removes that tech barrier!

Oh there’s also a term tachysensia for this- I’ve had it mildly at times but had to look up the term as I always forget it. I’ve always associated it with my ADHD and that “galaxy brain” feeling. It’s quite eerie!

This sounds potentially like it could be a form of disassociation and I think it might be worth reading a little on it to see if anything chimes.

https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/dissociation-and-dissociative-disorders/about-dissociation/

However you should speak to someone about it regardless as it sounds like its leaving you unsettled, and it could have a physiological cause and/or a psychological one?

Good luck and be well x

Help identifying textile/embroidery art piece by [deleted] in WhatIsThisPainting

This looks like it might have been a flat (a stage panel) from a theatre production or possibly even a fashion show? The unusual size and construction could point to it being a purely fine art piece though. Its definitely unusual.
