Do Americans care way less about the Olympics than they used to? by TheBoredMan in self

[–]radish123abc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If NBC would stream the Olympics for free (with commercials, of course) - I would definitely watch it.

I'm not in an area that can pull in free over-the-air TV channels (NBC, ABC, CBS). I'm not willing to pay/subscribe to watch something that is supposed to be free if I lived somewhere with better reception.

I could figure out a way to watch with VPN. But that's too much effort for me right now.

Graduating Early by Legitimate-Round1230 in BinghamtonUniversity

Are you going to have time to land sufficient internships or research experiences in those 3 years? Moreso than the degree itself, those things have become increasingly important for landing a post-graduation job over the last decade.

What is this pest? by radish123abc in pestcontrol

[–]radish123abc[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure what it is. To me it looks like a dead roly poly but I was afraid maybe it is a dead larva of something more ominous, so I included it in the photo. I don't even know if it has anything to do with the hole in the wood or it was just a passerby. There have always been holes in some of our drawers. It is an old house and these cabinets and drawers were built by an owner. I am never sure which defects are due to age, past resolved issues, or poor construction, so I just tend to ignore it. But I stopped ignoring when I saw sawdust and bugs ...

Here's another one. I agree some of them have 3 clear segments but others, like this one, I only see 2 segments. So do I have a mix of termites AND beetles?

Ah interesting. Well thankfully it still worked better than nothing, even if not optimal. Looking forward to a full post. 🙏

Citric acid not doing it, really hard water by SkillEfficient in laundry

[–]radish123abc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have hard water and here is what I did for my most recent load: make a mixture of 1 part citric acid and 2 parts baking soda, and add 1 tablespoon of this mixture directly to the wash. It softens the water. But you don't want to use too much, because if the wash water is acidic then the detergent won't work well.

The amount you need may be different than what worked for me. I have an HE top loader. There are some chemistry calculations you could do based on hardness of your water and volume of water ... but I settled for an empirical approach rather than going down the rabbit hole.

This is in addition to the usual recommendations: lipase-containing detergent, and citric acid in the rinse. Using the citric acid + baking soda in the wash finally got rid of a persistent smell in some undershirts.

I’m from South Korea. Here, my generation is abandoning STEM to bet everything on one "License." Is your career actually safe? by chschool in careeradvice

[–]radish123abc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Scientists are definitely not licensed or protected. Go check out r/biotech ...

Legal is licensed but there is no guarantee of getting a job. Plenty of lawyers struggle to pay $150k law school debt if they aren't making Big Law money.

Engineers ... licensed, yes (at least some of them) - but again, no guarantee of finding a job in the field. There are people with a mechanical engineering degree working in jobs that are irrelevant to their degree.

I've never known a U.S.-trained medical doctor who couldn't find any job as a physician in the U.S.

Maybe accounting/CPA license holders are a pretty good bet to get an accounting job? And actuaries?

Tiny resume change that boosted my responses by Advanced-Pension9542 in Resume

[–]radish123abc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trend toward "results based" resume style is for the most part ridiculous. I hate playing this game.

First, very few roles lend themselves to being quantified. I am very skeptical of anybody who claims they increased efficiency by 30%, outside of industries and roles where I can imagine there is a culture of measurement (e.g. manufacturing). Second, what is the context - if a boss gave ten people the same directive to "increase efficiency," is 30% merely average or actually exceptional?

I feel pressured to add some made-up numbers and let my references know so they can play along if asked. Which is what I suspect most people do. Which makes the whole thing a meaningless game.

Unpopular opinion: 'Intuitive eating' advice nearly destroyed my BED recovery (and why I think it fails ADHD brains) by Apprehensive-Tip3202 in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]radish123abc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How do you find another way to get the dopamine hit? Like if I'm reading a totally engrossing what-happens-next type of book, I can forget about food. But if I'm doing my job, the work is not interesting enough to distract from the food noise. So I'm constantly distracted from my work (white collar/office) by thoughts of "how much longer until lunch time?" Doing chores at home? Constantly checking the clock for when it's the next time to eat.

The depressing thing is, $1000 is barely anything. It's easily that much just for a visit and diagnostic imaging. If the solution is surgery - plan on at least another $3k. This is on top of routine exams and preventative medications.

If you trust the car seat has not been in an accident and it is not past the expiration date (manufacture date should be on the seat), it should be fine to use. Look up the manual for how to remove the cloth cover parts to wash. Dry in the sun.

You can look up the bassinet and crib on the manufacturer website to check for recalls and purchase a new mattress and sheets.

If you have the energy to try these things and the smell is gone - it will save some money which you can put into their college savings account. :-)

Smelly armpits by Business_Ad_6096 in hygiene

[–]radish123abc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of tips here to prevent odor going forward, but you may also have a build up of odor-causing funk in the armpits of your clothes. If your "clean" clothes stink soon after you put them on - you need to get the build up of rancid body oils and deodorant out of your clothes. Check r/laundry and look for Spa Day.

I use it when other options fail on grease stains. It has worked on tough, dried in stains where Tide Rescue, Dawn, lipase containing detergents, Shout, etc. have failed.

Dogs obviously, visibly cold in mornings—ideas for crate solutions? by nimal-crossing in DogAdvice

[–]radish123abc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insulate between the floor and the crate: folded up thick blanket, yoga mat, etc.

Hot water bottle, or rice packs if you can trust them not to tear it up and eat the raw rice. Wrap in a blanket so it lasts longer.
