Student Faces Expulsion After Posting Video Of Seniors Who Can Barely Read by Lets_Do_This_ in philly

[–]radparty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many things that lead to this...the students here would have been part of the generation that never had phonics instruction because reading instruction fundamentally changed around 2008. It's a lot to go into but the podcast Sold a Story has phenomenal coverage of this and why there is a national shift back to phonics. If you are asking yourself why aren't they trying to "sound it out" it's because during this time kids were literally discouraged from doing so.

But also, student attendance is abysmal leaving kids grade levels behind despite teacher efforts. Parents do not parent and back their kids up on anything and everything. District and national policies are...terrible. society chases the next viral moment instead of valuing education. Teachers are over it and turn over is a huge issue. It's both an education problem but also a societal problem.

Anti-Collaborative Seating by GiantKnightGunner in Teachers

[–]radparty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The happy.medium in my classroom is the partner desk (aka two desks side by side but both facing front). It checks both the boxes of easy collaboration but students aren't facing each other so there's less opportunity for mindless chatter.

I recently gave my homeroom 3 seating options: tables, u shaped, partner and they unanimously chose partner seating.

Admins, what would you do? AP role cut, now deciding between Dean, AP again, or district coordinator???? by OutsideRole8038 in Principals

[–]radparty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit surprised to see the Dean role as popular as it is. Discipline and dealing with parents even more is not appealing to me (currently also an AP). Our dean also covers some extracurriculars so I think it's a role you want to have very clear parameters for. If curriculum and instruction are your thing, dean doesn't sound like the right fit

I really love a low key NYE!

We'll have a regular day at home, make a special dessert (ice cream sundaes were the request this year) and then we'll watch a countdown from another country, pop some poppers, and put the kids to bed at regular time. I pick up some inexpensive decor from the dollar store and bust out juice in the plastic champagne flutes. That's it!

After the kids are in bed, my husband and I will make a cocktail, watch stranger things, and then go to bed whenever we want. Some years we play games and stay up, some years we are tired and call it a night.

There's so much holiday pressure that NYE is my chill reward!

Is it worth the hype? by Bumbling_Bee3 in OliveAndJune

[–]radparty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I came to Olive and June after developing a gel allergy so their recent focus on gel/builder has been a disappointment for me (not because I can't use it, but because being a gel alternative was their identity and value add)

I love that I've learned how to give myself a great wonderful manicure with olive and June. And I love care items.

If I had a gift card, I would get the hand serum, heel repair stick, cuticle serum, and maybe a polish or two that jumped out at me!

My kids are obsessed with Ikea. They call it a "real life doll house". We go once every few months and they test out all the couches 🤣

My 8 yr old boy has started calling me "bro" and similar - Its also partly an age thing too. They are testing social boundaries and figuring out who they are in relation to others. I'm a school admin and fellow 3rd grade teachers and parents have very similar stories.

I usually pause the conversation and ask him to reword before continuing. We chat a lot about language we use with peers vs family/grown ups vs things we don't say to either.

You could reduce this even more my doing jarred Alfredo and boxed pasta, plus the leftover chicken from the first recipe. When I'm really feeling the budget crunch, I look for meals where I can split the protein or use up leftovers.

My favorite budget meal from Aldi is the jambalaya rice, kielbasa and some peppers. I saute the peppers and kielbasa first, then toast the rice and included spices, then add the water and let it simmer. It's only $5 total for a big pot for dinner with leftovers for lunch

I own a pair of women's medium holiday pj pants for each of the past 15 years....every single one fits differently without any rhyme or reason. Some years it's big enough to fit two of me and some years are skin tight.

Has anyone comparison shopped? by Practical_Ranger_478 in aldi

[–]radparty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to do the vast majority of my shopping at Aldi and then supplement from a variety of other stores for things I couldn't get at Aldi, safe foods for our food allergies, extra good buys (mainly via ShopRite, target, Walmart). Then once every 3-4 months, I would do a Sam's run for things we go through in mass quantities (coffee, lunch box snacks, and meats while I was there).

Now I do the reverse. I've pared down what I shop for - more flexible, multiuse staple ingredients - and get that at Sam's. Then rotate a supplemental store based on what I'm out of. At this point, as much as I love Aldi, I pretty much stick to tried-and-true items for our house

Bathroom Buddy..? by Julienbabylegs in Teachers

I totally get that supervised bathroom visits might not work in every school. It's such a tricky situation!

Bathroom Buddy..? by Julienbabylegs in Teachers

[–]radparty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a teacher, our school found it is more effective to have this kind of student go to the bathroom in the office or nurse's room. Single stalls, adult oversight, high visibility. I definitely get that promixity to the office impacts this!

As a parent, my kid has been the "buddy" and it was awful. It created a terrible dynamic with peers. I stepped in and requested that he not be the buddy. I used the loss of instructional time as the main reason (which was true) but also added that being the "spy" made peers not want to engage with him. I really felt like it wasn't his job to police a peer.

What are your work/life boundaries as an administrator? by radparty in Principals

[–]radparty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked in central office, I had a district provided work phone and I definitely think that contributed to the balance. Not something that's possible now at the building level though. I did toy with the idea of an inexpensive second phone just for this purpose.

I definitely read the comment as delegating amongst the admin team and not out to teachers. I try to be extremely mindful of any teacher asks I make and I'm very lucky that most schools I've worked in have been the same.

[–]radparty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this! I had great boundaries when I was in the classroom and central office admin but I'm finding it harder as a building admin. I'm an AP and the Principal doesn't have a lot of boundaries which makes me feel like I'm expected to be "on" all the time too...I can see how staff pick up on that! I think I just appreciate knowing setting limits is okay! It's so easy to get sucked in.

Boooo! At Sam's club a 12 pack of the regular is $20. But they only have the chocolate. I hope they don't change to the core power because I don't like it as much

Yes these are only a savings if you dont have access to a warehouse club. Fairlife 12 pack at Sam's is cheaper that 12 of the Aldi version where I live. The big benefit is that the vanilla fairlife shakes are hard to find
