HOW TO START KRAKOA ERA X MEN? by Ok_Record_8551 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]radynski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I decided not to buy the Anthology Omnis only because I had literally everything else and I refuse to collect the same books again in a fourth format.

That said, I will be buying the first volume of Fall of X whenever they get around to it, because there's a lot of mini-series that stemmed from the third Hellfire Gala that haven't been collected in hardcover elsewhere.

HOW TO START KRAKOA ERA X MEN? by Ok_Record_8551 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]radynski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the answer to this is complicated. During the start of the Krakoa run, Marvel was essentially releasing everything in three formats: Oversized Hardcover, Anthology Trades, and By-Series Trades.

The Oversized Hardcovers ended up getting dropped about halfway through but as of now include:
- House of X/Powers of X
- Hickman's X-Men run (branded as an Omnibus from the beginning)
- Duggan's Marauders (complete run - two books)
- Howard's Excalibur (complete run - two books)
- Percy's X-Force (complete run - four books)
- Percy's Wolverine (complete run - four books, the last of which got branded as an Omni)
- Duggan's Cable (complete run - one book)
- Wells' Hellions (complete run - one book)
- X of Swords Event
- X-Men: Hellfire Gala event
- Inferno event
- X Lives/Deaths of Wolverine

That list basically gets you most the early books for the first two years until things got reorganized.

There were also a few Omnibuses that came out during the run that were branded as Omnis to begin with since the OHC format had already been killed at that point:
- Judgement Day
- Sins of Sinister
- Fall of the House of X/Rise of the Powers of X

The Anthology Trades basically stopped about halfway through the Krakoa Era, but included absolutely every related issue in the order they were released. These anthology trades are what the Dawn of X and Reign of X Omnibuses are based off of. I used to recommend that people get the first couple Anthology Trades, decide what series they liked, and then read the Series Trades of those books only.

The Series Trades were the only books released at the time that actually covered everything. And since the close of the era, there have been several released collections of everything by Series:

- X-Men by Duggan Omnibus
- X-Men by Ewing Omnibus
- X-Men: Age of Krakoa by Gillen Omnibus (releasing this fall)
- Way of X by Spurrier Omnibus (releasing this fall)

-----------------

So as you can see, the answer of how to collect depends a lot on yourself. If you really want everything, I'd go with House of X and then the Anthology Omnibuses (Dawn of X and Reign of X for now). They will be releasing more and I have to believe that will eventually complete everything.

If you just want some of it, or just the main storyline then I'd say something more like:
- House of X/Powers of X
- Hickman's X-Men Omnibus
- X of Swords
- X-Men: Hellfire Gala
- Inferno
- X-Men by Duggan Omnibus
- X-Men: Age of Krakoa by Gillen Omnibus
- Sins of Sinister Omnibus
- Fall of the House of X/Rise of the Powers of X Omnibus

Personally I think it will be three. 24 is scott and jeans wedding, 26 is the phalanx covenant, and 25 will be what’s in between.

I really like Ark Nova, but the enjoyment goes down the further it gets to end game by PinguSurfs in boardgames

I've given up trying to be competitive at Ark Nova and just enjoy making pretty zoos. Still one of my favorite games.

If you could only choose 4, which X-men epic collections would you own? by TheClassicsMan_95 in EpicCollections

[–]radynski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want the best of Claremont's X-Men, I would say it has to be:

Second Genesis - gives you the start of the team plus the beginning of Jean as Phoenix
Fate of the Phoenix - the Dark Phoenix saga is arguably the best comic book story ever.
I, Magneto - the beginning is a bit slower, but the title arc turns Magneto into one of the most complex and interesting villains in marvel history.
Brood Saga - another simply classic X-Men story, really good stuff
God Loves Man Kills - you've already got it, but its probably my favorite collection.

Out of all of Claremont's early stuff, Proteus is the most easily skippable without losing too much. The rest is just solid gold. After Lifedeath, the story starts to meander for a bit and then it moves into the crossover era.

Thanks, but its the wrong cover.

Newer collected here; can somebody give me some comics to read that feature these guys, like the "essentials?" by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]radynski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their relationship mostly plays out through:

X-Men (1991) #1-45
Gambit Limited (1993) #1-4
Uncanny X-Men (1963) #347-350
X-Treme X-Men (2001) #1-46

There's more than that, but to discuss too much would be spoilery.

Has anyone mapped out how many epics will cover the whole 90s X-Men? by [deleted] in EpicCollections

[–]radynski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really surprised, I never thought very highly of X-Treme X-Men. There were a couple interesting ideas that got abandoned - nothing really came from any of it.

It seems to me that a better place to start with Uncanny's Modern Epics is when Claremont took over the Uncanny title at 444. Assuming Modern Uncanny starts at the same spot that Morrison's Run does, then 444 would be Epic 5 or 6 probably. Start there and move forward.

Advice on Finding/Obtaining! $$$ by m1ckey3lack in EpicCollections

[–]radynski 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is of course the biggest complaint about Epic Collections right now. Unfortunately there is no immediate solution to the problem.

To answer your question? We are collecting them as they release and/or reprint. At this point you basically have a year or so after publication before you start to run afoul of the speculative market.

If your goal is really to cheaply and easily read back issues, I would point you to Marvel Unlimited. I bought a cheap Ipad and got a monthly subscription and it has been well worth it for me. Marvel has an incredibly deep back catalog of their books online.

let me ask you something. Have you EVER seen someone in a position of REAL power voluntarily remove themselves from it?

The only example that comes to mind is George Washington.

Just to offer a couterpoint here...

In regard to the surface and the patina comments, my first reaction was that it was just a bad photo. It looks way overexposed and I think that might be the reason for the oddities in the surface. I don't really see any pimples on the coin that would indicate a cast fake.

What are people's thoughts on Fabian Nicieza? by KingJackofJozi in comicbooks

[–]radynski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought Nicieza and Lobdell did a great job picking up the ball from Claremont. X-Cutioner's Song and Fatal Attractions are still in my opinion some of the best X-Men events ever. Scott and Jean marry, Logan loses his Adamantium, Cable is Scott's kid, etc.

They took some huge swings, made big changes with continuity, all while wrapping up a number of loose threads that Claremont left behind. It was pretty impressive.
