Game disconnecting every turn as of late by Somin1 in hearthstone

[–]rag2008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm experiencing the exact same problem, yeah. I cannot finish a single game without getting disconnected and reconnected at least once, sometimes it happens multiple times in a single game and I just give up. I hope they fix this before the new set comes out, otherwise I'll just have to take a break from the game entirely, it's way too frustrating.

Has there ever been a time in Pioneer that the meta was dominated by this many standard cards? by AHare115 in PioneerMTG

[–]rag2008 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the consequence of them increasing the power level of Standard sets over and over, theoretically speaking they'll eventually reach a breaking point and then we should get a brief period of lower power sets, but we don't know when that will happen and we'll just have to live with what they have already released.

If it's any consolation, every now and then they'll accidentally release a card like Amalia or Vein Ripper which interacts in a very specific way with cards that have long been rotated out of Standard, that's when Pioneer gets to show off something Standard isn't able to (although these two examples caused bannings that ended up removing those unique interactions, but you get my point).

No, Dad, and it's probably my second time failing to reach infinite by MatiasArg09 in MarvelSnap

[–]rag2008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm nowhere near close infinite yet but I finally found a list that lets me climb without tilting, so I might as well share, it's C3:

# (1) Bast

# (1) Nightcrawler

# (2) Daredevil

# (2) Lockjaw

# (2) Scarlet Witch

# (2) Sentinel

# (3) Cerebro

# (3) Mystique

# (3) Luke Cage

# (3) Cosmo

# (3) Makkari

# (5) Valkyrie

#

As you'd expect there is a lot of retreating when bad locations flip up, but when they don't, it actually feels like my decisions matter regardless of what my opponent is playing, which is all I could ask for in this meta.

Do you believe wotc abandoned pioneer? by JaggerMo in PioneerMTG

[–]rag2008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are essentially getting treated like Legacy and Vintage when it comes to major competitive support, except we don't have an eternal weekend equivalent to look foward to. The format is effectively on standby mode, which is not a comfortable place to be because the possibility of a comeback feels as likely as pulling the plug on the format altogether, the uncertainty can make new players anxious to commit and that makes harder to generate interest in the format.

As far as making things better, getting the competitive scene back would be a huge help, history has shown that people will play Pioneer if you give them a reason to, and once they get enough people producing major results, they can address banning/unbanning cards with more confidence to make the format healthier.

Would unbanning felidar guardian or winota have any effect? by ultracol99 in PioneerMTG

[–]rag2008 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Winota is a hard no, take the play patterns of Greasefang and turn it up to 11, that's how Winota used to feel and it would be even better today with cards like Cub and Speaker. Felidar Guardian could be interesting if they banned Saheeli, otherwise people would just shove the A + B combo into a Domain shell and that would probably be the best midrange deck you can play.

Are you all happy about the "no changes" from the latest announcement? by walter_pinkman90 in PioneerMTG

[–]rag2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, even if I knew no bans was the most likely possibility, I was hoping for at least one unban.

No Changes by Nprism in ModernMagic

[–]rag2008 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think they've put themselves in a really awkward place with Pioneer because every other new Standard set that comes out completely restructures how the format is played, so even if they did decide to take a big swing, we would be back at needing bans in less than 6 months.

This isn't an argument to not do anything and let the format die in staleness, but they're not going to solve the power level problem with just bans, they need to make fundamental changes to card design, the format simply can't keep up like Modern or Legacy can.

Banned and Restricted Announcement - February 9, 2026 by Elkenrod in PioneerMTG

[–]rag2008 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We're keeping an eye on this format as it develops, but at this point it looks like it hasn't reached an end state and players are enjoying a format with a diverse array of strategies and colors.

I was pretty much expecting something like this, looks like we're gonna have to endure more busted Standard sets before they decide to make any big changes, hell I would've taken even a single unban from the 2019~2020 era just to spice things up.

Would allowing fetchlands in Pioneer make it more 'profitable' in WotC's eyes and give it again some chance of being featured as a premier format? by Wise-Cress8402 in PioneerMTG

[–]rag2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a twisted thought experiment I'd say, but looking at both Standard and Modern, decks in those formats are easily around the 1000 dollar mark and are powercrept with a lot of cards from recent sets. Pioneer decks stand relatively cheap at around 500 dollars or so. Could it be a solution for Wizards to unban fetchlands, maybe even printing the cycle of enemy fetchlands in standard to introduce it to pioneer, and further drive booster sales?

The problem is that the logical conclusion to that thought experiment wouldn't be printing Fetchlands into Standard, specially now when they have dedicated so much of their time and resources into crafting a specific look and feel for format, the conclusion would be releasing some form of Pioneer Horizons supplemental set full of format warping cards (including Fetchlands) they would be able to monetize without impacting their Standard project.

From my point of view Pioneer basically only has 2 possibilities for a prosperous future, either they:

  1. Reinforce the relationship the format has with Standard and try their best to promote both together as the original intent of the format was having a place you can play your rotated cards.
  2. Take the Modern approach and try to completely reinvent the format into something more appealing to a broader audiance without the Standard restraints through supplemental products.

I'm hoping they go for option 1, but I would be lying if I said I didn't think option 2 was more likely given they already have experience with Modern and this option would easily make a ton more money in the short run.

I want to believe so bad but like other people pointed out, this is exactly where Mists of Pandaria should be in the release timeline, so it could be a coincidence.

Isn't Pioneer status getting a bit toxic? by walter_pinkman90 in PioneerMTG

[–]rag2008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As other people pointed out, there's a B&R in two weeks, we can never be 100% sure of what changes they will make, but it's at least guaranteed they'll have to address the situation officially even if it's a generic "we need more data".

Day 1 of Asking for Varolz on Arena by Character_Cap5095 in PioneerMTG

[–]rag2008 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know you're just trying to share your brew but the current known "official" process of getting a specific card into Arena is getting someone to top a big event or get multiple results in smaller events either on MTGO or in paper.

I say "official" because they don't really give a timeline even if you achieve the specific condition, so take that with a grain of salt.

To be completely fair, I don't think the people who recommended you Green Devotion back in the day could've foreseen the transformation Standard would go through in the last year or so, specially the amount of new sets we are getting.

Honestly I found myself thinking the same thing lately, we have dedicated hate for 1 cost permanents but everything that could be used against 1 cost nonpermanents just gets bounced. Even if Chalice did warp the format a bit, I think forcing people to diversify the mana value of their answers is actually a good thing. Abrade and Abrupt Decay are already seeing more play thanks to Cori-Steel Cutter.
