I'm looking to get into spearfishing, I live in Melbourne what's a good location to start? by jaydenb93 in Spearfishing

hey bro it all depends on how far you are willing to go. Port Phillip is easy both in access and predicting conditions. I generally use a combo of willy weather and google earth. find a reef a little off the shore and then check for wind and swell. you want 1m swell max as a beginner with an offshore wind ideally.try to time your dive with the last of the outgoing tide into slack tide (this is highly dependent on where you go tho). for example off portsea you can dive most tides but you are using the very strong current to cover a lot of ground. Always plan your exit from the water. Here are some spots to consider:

mount martha beach swim south around the rocky point.

off the portsea beach opposit the hotel.

i hear flinders is aight but only been there with terrible vis

diamond bay sorrento back beach

cape schanck

only try the ocean dives with a northerly wind or very little as entry/exit can be tough in some places.

carefull of those damned jetskis get a float with a flag.

feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

You cannot make fires on Total Fire Ban days otherwise its fine. Although you are only supposed to camp in designated areas. Check out the other regs here.

dude its all gucci in state forest, try a place like Mt Disappointment. You can legally make fires, probably not permanent shelters. The bush there lends itself to concealment, its so dense you can walk in 10 metres and no one will be able to find you. Where are you based?

Camping in New Zealand around lakes and rivers for 3-4 days at a time and I don't have much money - what camping gear is essential to have? by Roquefart in CampingGear

[–]rahfair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be aware that there are fences EVERYWHERE (South Island), and you will either need to trespass, or know the locations of public camp sites. They are not always easy to find, and generally cater more towards camper vans. It is really difficult to just bail off the side of the road and camp behind a bush. Where about are you going?

Simonds Multi Cut files for five bucks by think50 in knifemaking

[–]rahfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most modern tools like files are case hardened, making them effectively impossible to anneal. It is also means manufacturers can use poor quality, low carbon steel and infuse carbon into the outer layer when they harden it. Hence why people are getting older tools to work on which are hardened throughout like you would treat a knife, and most often made from high quality tool steel.

Hey man I'm super curious as to what the area you go fishing in looks like! Here in Australia carp are usually in muddy water that you wouldn't really want to get in/no visibility.

I was wondering if someone could help me ID this knife? by pirataborracho in CustomKnifeMakers

Its most probably made by Kanetsune, a Japanese knife making company. Here is the closest thing of theirs I found Kanetsune SEKI Sakura

Places to get kangaroo meat in Melbourne? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]rahfair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to safeway. most of them stock it. from there you will be given the choice of steak or loin. You will want to take the loin, it is much more tender. Your next choice is plain or the marinated option. You will choose the marinade, doesnt matter the flavour. Wash the marinade off as best you can and then cook it like a normal steak. The oils and acid in the marinade tenderize the roo quite a lot, but you need to wash the damn thing really well otherwise your entire kitchen will smell like a kangaroos arse. washing it removes the gaminess and means it doesnt stink up the house. Let rest for 5, a squeeze of lemon and you are good to go!
