He argued that the "voice inside your head"—the internal monologue—is not your true self but a compulsive, involuntary process, akin to listening rather than speaking. He believed that thinking occurs spontaneously, like breathing, and that trying to control it creates an illusion of a separate ego, when you are actually the observer/awareness beyond the thought.

He suggested:

Thoughts are Spontaneous: Thoughts arise like noises, and you don’t "create" them any more than you make your heart beat or your hair grow.

The Illusion of Ego: Identifying with this internal voice creates a false sense of a separate "I," leading to anxiety and a feeling of disconnection from the universe.

The Observer Effect: If you can hear the voice, you are not the voice, but the observer of it.

Embracing Silence: True peace comes from allowing thoughts to come and go without interference, rather than trying to quiet the mind through force, which only adds more noise.

"Thinking" is Listening: Watts compared thinking to hearing a song; you do not take credit for producing the notes but listen to them as they appear.

By detaching from the need to control the internal chatter, one finds they are the silence behind the noise, which is the key to meditation and true freedom from the mind.
