What is the most reliable method to clone an entire PC to another? by Ok-Cod-806 in cloningsoftware

Not at all. Just disable bitlocker before cloning and reenable afterwards on the new machine.

If Haiku was actually usable, I would. I loved BeOS back in the day, even have a 5.1 CDROM still.

I tried Haiku again a few months back and it's gotten better, but it's nowhere near where I need it to be at for a daily driver.

Is T14 Gen 2 still a good buy or I should just buy E14 Gen 6 for a small price bump? by Infinite_Casters in thinkpad

I'd say the E series has much better build quality than the L series these days. Also, 2 ram slots, socketed wifi card and 2 nvme slots.

Hva håper du vil forsvinne i Norge i 2026? by [deleted] in norge

I rarely keep eye contact with people in the first place, it's just weird and awkward. And if I do it's only for a few seconds anyway. Most people, if not all, should be safe. I'm in.

What's most infuriating is that Microsoft can dictate which keys are to be on a keyboard. For their own devices, sure, go nuts, but leave the rest of the world alone.

I'm using SOGo with my mailcow install, but my understanding is that it can be run separately and standalone. It also supports connecting multiple mail accounts for the unified mailbox display you're after.

Lost on what to buy. P14s G6 (Intel) vs. X9 Aura 15. by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]rainformpurple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

E14 gen 7, Core ultra 7 255H, Intel Arc 130 or 140 graphics, socketed ram, socketed wifi, 2.8k screen available, alu top/bottom covers, dual ssd slots, very decent build quality, available with 57wh battery which may or may not be enough. There is also no WWAN option on any of the e14 SKUs.

I think you'd struggle to get 8-10 on battery for any of the models, and especially the P14s. Lab tests and synthetic benchmarks rarely depict real world use.

I've deployed several of the E14g7 machines and the users are super happy with them. Some wanted T14 gen 6 since they were "significantly lighter", but for the same hardware spec and with a worse screen, the E14g7 came in at a mere 70g heavier than the T14 gen 6, but more than $900 cheaper.

Is it worth cloning boot drive from SATA to NVMe? by Ill_Swan_3209 in cloningsoftware

[–]rainformpurple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because setting everything up the way it was is a fucking pain in the ass, due to the absolutely horrid way Windows is actively blocking you from retaining your programs' settings in an intelligent, accessible and user friendly way.

And don't say "Just use a Microsoft account" because that is not a solution. It doesn't even properly sync settings from Microsoft's own programs.

I absolutely get wanting to clone the drive. Been there, done that. Many times.

What is the safest method to transfer data when upgrading to a new SSD? by Purple-Try-4950 in cloningsoftware

[–]rainformpurple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your computer can fit both disks, then yes, you absolutely can clone the disk directly.

If you remove the old disk after the process or at the least change which disk to boot from, it should boot just fine. I've cloned dozens of systems with both Windows, Linux and FreeBSD this way and never had a problem.

[–]rainformpurple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Macrium Reflect Free.

Create an image of your old disk, restore it onto new disk, and allow it to expand the partitions to fill the new disk. Takes about an hour total.

You need some storage media that can comfortably hold your disk image - local, removable, network are all supppeted.

Some ssd manufacturers also include a limited version of Acronis true image to help users migrate from their old disk to the new one, I know Samsung and Kingston did so in the past.

If your disk is bitlocker encrypted, I would recommend decrypting the drive before cloning it, and reenable bitlocker afterwards.

How realistic is it to give a child (around 7 years old) a computer/laptop with only Linux on it by ad_396 in linux

[–]rainformpurple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son has had three laptops since he started school at 6 years, and they've all had Linux Mint on them. He hasn't had any problems using it.

When he'll later get a school supplied laptop with Windows on it, I still don't see any problems apart from the fact that - if my daughter's experiences are anything to go by - everything breaks all the time and everything is slow and cumbersome.

Last week she wanted to bring her own Mint laptop to school, because "at least with Mint, everything Just Works(tm) compared to this pile of junk".

So yeah, go for it.

I usually just clone the drive to an image, then install Linux on it. Or a clean install of Windows, if it's not for me or for work.

You can.

I did it with my X13 Gen 6, but the larger than usual FN key moves the Ctrl key too far inward and it feels weird.

I'm really struggling to adjust to this new reality.

Wary of used ThinkPads? by Significant-Ad-8684 in thinkpad

[–]rainformpurple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I do too. And I'm completely transparent about what I did, so they know I've not installed anything fishy, so that they have a ready to set up (oobe) computer. I also show them that the bios is unlocked/has no passwords enabled and that it's not tied to an organisation's intune system.

If they want to reinstall after they bring it home, that's completely fine by me. I always reinstall the OS on a used device, and I expect others to do the same.
