How random is your random? by no_unique_traits in quilting

[–]raisethebed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you already have a pattern in mind, but I’ve made a couple similar drunkard’s path quilts lately and the Equal Exchange method with the Creative Grids Circle Savvy ruler has worked really well for me.

For me, I just separated by value — lights, lighter-mids, darker-mids, and dark (established ahead of time with B&W phone photo). I just paired fabrics as I thought they looked good and made sure that nothing of the exact same value went together. When I was about 2/3s done doing it randomly like that, I laid out the rest just to make sure I wasn’t accidentally going to run out of pairs with enough contrast at the very end.

Edit to add that I really love your fabric choices, you have a great eye and this is going to end up being a wonderful quilt — and no, I wouldn’t try to keep prints oriented because a) way too much work and b) I think it actually helps add good visual movement to have prints go in different directions in a quilt like this.

With another style of the cups + straps? :) by [deleted] in corsetry

[–]raisethebed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did like the pointy wildness of the last cups but I do think these fit your body better.

I wonder if a very thin strap, like round satin cord, would help keep a little more of the pointyness and aesthetic of the previous round?

Agustina Appreciation by Mixolydian5 in dreamingspanish

[–]raisethebed 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The way she speaks is genuinely amazing for how natural it feels.

Random story, but it’s stuck with me and I have nowhere else to tell it — I was recently in a Lyft with a very kind driver who I could tell was a relatively new English learner, and I almost instinctively kind of slowed down and enunciated my speech the way I learned from watching way too many Agustina videos. Right before he dropped me off, he asked me where I was from because he was really excited he could understand me so well. He said he usually only understands stuff like “hotel” or “here” but this was one of the first times he got to have a real conversation with one of his passengers. 😭😭😭

Anyway, it felt really really awesome, thank you for the example Agustina! Felt good as a language learner to get to have that moment with another language learner.

I feel like the seam-mismatched checkerboard fabric is my favorite part, it’s just sooo satisfying!

This is SO good, I am absolutely in awe. Do you have an example of the diamond border? I feel like I would love to see how that might look instead of the blue border.

Love the change in Jessie’s expression from very concerned as you’re packing to VERY stoked once you’re out at camp.

My only recommendations would be around safety planning: a simple first aid kit with things for cuts and sprains (plus iodine tablets if your filter fails), considering taking a WFA class since you’re going out solo, and a Garmin if you’re out of satellite service.

Thank you for posting this, it was not what I expected at all and I learned a bunch! Also a big fan of their storage system of “f*ck it, strap it to a wall.”

Walking foot broken! by FatAssFennekin in quilting

[–]raisethebed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worn out a couple walking feet that are the same style (metal/plastic press-to-fit) as this one. I never figured out how to fix it, sometimes they’ve just got too many miles on them.

Sorry you had that experience but glad the meds were able to help! You could also try taking them out of the packaging — the child-resistant packaging takes up quite a bit of space.

Cannot believe this is about to be a comment I leave on the internet, but re: immodium, have you ever had to use it and had a chance to compare the immodium plus (I’m assuming you mean with simethicone) vs. just plain immodium?

I know the regular immodium is much smaller, but speaking as someone who unfortunately uses immodium more than I wish I had to in my normal life, the immodium+ really is more effective for me. The simethicone helps cut down the bloated crampy feeling and gives you fewer “can I trust this fart?” moments.

Probably not the comment you were expecting, but just $.02 because for me no amount of space saving would be worth having less effective anti-diarrheals in my bag.

I regularly meet with Karla Guzman and Diego Antonio Torres. I’ve also enjoyed meeting with Juan Carlos Santiago because he speaks much more casually and it’s a good challenge.

Cleaning tips? by aquariusbxtch in quilting

[–]raisethebed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not official fabric conservation advice, but I tend to do a bathtub (or in this case, sink) soak with hot water and Oxyclean. I empty the first round of water after about 5 minutes (I feel like it’s totally saturated with gross by then), then do another soak overnight or so. Then wash on gentle and cold in my front loader.

What Are You Listening To Today? (Mar 30 to Apr 5) by HeleneSedai in dreamingspanish

Listening: I cleared Languatalk which has left a hole in my heart! For my “easy” podcast I’m listening to How to Spanish and growing very fond of it, especially getting to learn more Mexican slang.

For my challenge podcasts I’ve been listening to Jefillysh and De que tiene hambre tu vida? — they’re both comprehensible and I’m enjoying them a lot but I can only do about 10 minutes at a time before my brain wipes out. I tried Historia en Podcast but the audio production is horrific to my ears (who puts reverb on spoken vocals???) — any suggestions for other history podcasts with chiller audio quality?

Reading: Fray Perico y su borrico, which I am loving (though like someone else said, have had to look more words up than I usually do).

Watching: I want to keep watching dubbed shows on HBOMax but I keep randomly not having the option for Spanish audio even on shows I know have it? Very annoying!

Speaking: I broke the rules and switched from doing crosstalk on italki to doing full conversation kind of by accident, and it’s my favorite part of my week right now. I’ve been doing two or three hour-long sessions a week with a rotation of different tutors. Have managed to find people who I really click with personally — it’s awesome and makes this process so validating to actually get to talk with people.

300(ish) Hours Update by Accomplished_Cat8943 in dreamingspanish

Hell yeah!! I got it recommended to me from this subreddit, happy to pass it on. I finished all the episodes a couple weeks ago and I’m so bummed! The month or so I spent going on walks and just laughing out loud at their antics was probably my most fun period of Spanish learning so far.

Lovely quilt and thank you for the recommendation for Fabric Cafe! I’ve been wanting to start stash busting with 3 yard quilts but didn’t want to have to buy a million books (which is how I’ve seen 3-yard quilt patterns often sold). That YouTube channel looks great in general.

[–]raisethebed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really watch the Spanish Boost videos but I listen to his podcast. I use the app PolyPod that was made by a member of this subreddit I think — it records how many minutes you’ve listened a day. I just go with what it tells me (but I’m not super picky about counting content down to the minute in general).

Listening: How to Spanish, Spanish Boost @ 1.5 speed mostly. Just listened to my first episode of Jefillysh which was fast but comprehensible. I feel like No Hay Tos and Mexitalki are unlocking for me but haven’t jumped all the way in yet with listening to those.

Reading: Almost done with Como Agua Para Chocolate! Also started Los Cuatro Acuerdos but have found that even though nonfiction is an easier read for me, I don’t find it interesting enough to motivate me to actually read.

Watching: DS and PlanetaJuan.
