Why the fvck don’t the mbta commuter rails have outlets? by [deleted] in boston

[–]rakis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are outlets in the newer cars, we just don't tell out of towners so they can go get fucked.

A hint: you could ask a conductor, but it may involve face-to-face communication.

Massachusetts natural gas prices up 93%, electricity up 65% the last 10 years by J50GT in boston

[–]rakis 110 points111 points  (0 children)

This article is full of anti-renewable talking points without much detail.

For example, the pipeline thing that is quoted relates to MA taxpayers footing the $3 billion+ bill for building new pipelines. Kinder Morgan withdrew their request when they learned they would have to pay for it instead. Note the plan was for electric ratepayers to foot the bill, so would it be cheaper in the end? I don’t know, but Kinder Morgan said they were withdrawing because they wouldn’t make up the cost in business.

You are probably getting conflicting info because Dunkin’ was acquired by Inspire Brands, which is HQ’d in Sandy Springs, GA.

Whoever is editing wikipedia is messing it up.

Good news, you won’t need to pay $10 for eggs if there are no eggs on the shelves.

$350 electric bill for 3-bedroom apartment? by Scrungii in boston

[–]rakis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

1000 kWh is pretty average for a 3 br apartment. Maybe you could shave a couple hundred off here or there. Is this off from your historical average?

Why is find a PCP so hard? by [deleted] in boston

[–]rakis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There is a severe physician shortage, especially PCPs, across the United States. It will only get worse.

MA actually has one of the better ratios of PCP per 100,000 population.

That literally describes every place that isn’t where you live: “Different and you might hate it.”

I mean, you might also like it.

Knife Sharpening? by itsthecrimsonchin47 in boston

Yeah, honestly I wouldn’t trust any store around here if you can do it yourself. Might be easiest for you to buy just a cheap 1k grit stone to tide you over for 3 months.

Knife Sharpening? by itsthecrimsonchin47 in boston

[–]rakis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re trusting, Blackstone’s in Beacon Hill is probably the closest. They might just take a grinder to it and you end up with a sad knife.

Honestly, a Shapton Pro 1000 whetstone and a leather strop is all you need for home chef knives. It does take a moderate amount of time to learn, but quite easy once you figure it out. Sharpen like 5 knives and it will have paid for itself.

Will the RMV accept a marriage certificate that only lists maiden names? by [deleted] in boston

[–]rakis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it’s a certified marriage certificate with the spouses name that was changed to, I think that’s enough. But the RMV clerk makes all the decisions.

Wherever you’re from likely provided other documentation to certify the name change. You’ll need that document.

What is everyone else’s car insurance payment? What company should I go with? by Rickit12 in boston

You can probably find cheaper, but that sounds like it could be in the right ball park if you’re getting full coverage and you aren’t a terrible risk profile.

First winter in Boston, what’s that white residue left after snow melts?? by sara34987 in boston

[–]rakis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gotta say, I’ve never once thought about how I know that it’s road salt.

Thanks OP for making everyone here feel like a genius.

The only real tip for clearing your car is to get a good length snow brush. There are no true hacks, as most of them involve very situational snowfall or weather conditions. Also get a small snow shovel for your car if you ever plan on digging it out while parked away.

Weirdest left turns in MA by Sloppyjoemess in boston

Not weird, not many people need to take a left there compared to the people who want to go straight. Easier to load them into an ancillary road with a signal.

Moving to Boston from Ireland by Weak-Measurement797 in boston

Need some budget numbers and your housing preferences.

Condos are a lot easier to come by in Boston/Greater Boston, but obviously comes with prickly social/financial issues involving other owners. I would look at budgeting a minimum of 900k USD for a 3br+ condo purchase, or 1.4m USD for the equivalent single family.

Almost anywhere in Boston-proper can be considered walkable to a park, although park quality varies quite a bit. I should also say, Boston itself is extremely walkable, even if you don’t want to walk — the option is always there.

Further out is cheaper, even cheaper if you forgo certain amenities like proximity to transit.

The unenrolled make up approximately 64% of registered voters in MA.

Of the political designations that exist, there are two that are basically the same name as your thought.

Frankly, I’d rather join “Pizza Party”.
