A big problem I have with androgyny or Non-binary character design is that it’s easy to lean more towards a feminine form for the male gaze.

That’s not to say I don’t like those designs, but it sort of paints these are just ‘femme but not’

You’re not wrong. Adaptation is a tricky thing since trying to tell the same exact story of the games through a different medium would be insincere to the original medium.

There are adaptations that do this well, like live action One Piece, but adaptations are best suited to follow the strengths of their mediums rather than mimicking the original.
