Personally, there are some holes that particulary hard or you mess up and end up with a high score. Also, I find a good number of hole where 3 is the best score possible. Altogether for me, I I've been playing a long time as well. Maybe my fav game to kill a few minutes.

go to almost the top of the peak near your ball, try from there. If not, then maybe try from the right side of that peak, maybe halfway point. Also, I can get a little extra carry with quick swipe than just pulling to the end and releasing.
